In this week we were honored by the presence of the Administration Assistant to President Eisenhower, the Governor and many other distinguished businessmen and women. We dedicated a total of seven educational buildings and a new waterplant, along with other civic improvements. ln making these improvements in our school system there was no federal aid called for, although it was in excess of three million dollars. Among the improvements were modern furnishings, a new cafeteria, modernized departments such as band, home economics, industrial arts, agriculture, etc., and an effective lighting system, Crowded corridors mark Homecoming Week utilizing natural light as well as indirect lighting. On the Fourteenth of November the High School was open to all the schools in the county for inspection. The fifteenth brought school and college administrators. Then came the seventeenth and the formal dedication. The last two days, the eighteenth and nineteenth, were filled by the Industrial Development Day and School Athletics Day. This was a week to be remembered in Greensburg. The Class of i958 is iustifiably proud to have been a part of dedication week. We are also proud to say that the people of Greensburg gave us the opportunity to re- ceive the best education available. Athletic Night The School City ot Greensburg dedicated, on November 17, a total ot seven educational buildings-a new high school, three new elementary schools, a new addition to St. Mary's elementary school, a remodeled iunior high school and a converted school administration building. The tour new buildings, built simultaneously and occupied during 1957, are of the finest construction, and provide maximum facilities, at a cost in excess of i p3,000,000. Dr. Kevin McCann, the principal speaker. The cornerstone for our new high school was laid on October 30, 1956. The building was completed in the sum- mer of 1957. It was used for the first time on September 5, 1957, at the opening ot the 1957-1958 school year. The auditorium was used for the first time in the presen- tation ot Kappa Kapers on October 3, 1957. 9 1x9 Proud citizens attend dedication ceremonies The principal speaker at the for- mal ceremony in the high school gym was Dr. Kevin McCann, Ad- ministrative Assistant to President Eisenhower. Another ot the dis- tinguished personalities was guest speaker Mr. S. D. Den Uyl of Detroit, Michigan, President of Bohn Aluminum 8. Brass Corporation. Superintendent Alexander shows our new school to Dr. Harold H. Church of Indiana University, Dr. Kevin McCann, Adminis trative assistant to President Eisenhower, and Mayor Sheldon Smith. The High School Band begins the dedication cere monies on Hnal night. Madison High School was the opponent of the Greensburg Pirates for the eve- ning's basketball game. Their band played before the game and at half-time intermissions. High School Principal Floyd Davis was in charge of the program and introduced the guest speakers, Mr. L. V. Phillips, Robert Hinshaw, assistant to Commissioner L. V. Phillips, Mayor Shel- don Smith, Reverend George Ziemer, Gerald Alexander, Superintendent of Schools, School Board members, and other Greensburg school principals. Our color guard. also featured during formal ceremonies, stands proudly in front of the new building Homecoming exercises held during the week of November l4, i957 came to a close with ath- letics night, held in the high school gymnasium on November l9, l957. The convocations rep- resented many different areas of endeavor, including one-act plays, vocational guidance programs, musical presentations, science and current event features, and several other outstanding programs. Playshop, the school's dramatic club, presented two very enioyable comedies. An in- formative and interesting vocational guidance program and clinic was held in March. Contestants for the district music contest performed on several occasions. A highlight in the year's presentations was the report of Senator Homer E. Capeheart on his visit and observations in Russia. Throughout the year various school organizations sponsored other convocations and skits, including the Sunshine initiation program and the Breeze skit. An impressive Thanksgiving program was also presented by student speakers. ':A ixmi-fi us ,, -- E . if , Q Y S ROW 'le David Hartwell, Charles Peters, Louis Ewing, Bruce Farthing. Varsity Basketball With eight returning lettermen, this year's Pirates showed an improvement over last year's team, Although the records don't show this our style at playing does. Greensburg was beaten in the second round of the sectionals. Next year's Pirates should be even better due to the tact that only one starter grad- uated. Then, too, we had a capable B-Team to strengthen our bench. 76 . -ru Wolter Nobbe Charles Peters Roy Robbins Graduating Seniors Mark Hermonn Richard Heger John Westhcfer 39 i Charles Butch Owens has served in the capacity of Student Manager for all four years of his high school career. Varsity Football 1957 Greensburg's 1956 campaign greatly resembled the preceeding season's mark, but with one exception. Coach Simmons' team improved to the point that they won one game this season and none the last. After several peppy practices, and with good spirit and morale in evidence, the Pirates seemed anything but an accommodating host as they trounced Batesville l9-O. Earlier in the season Greensburg outplayed Edinburgh as far as statistics are concerned but still fell short to the tune of a scant one-point margin, 7-6. Another contest, against a strong Rushville eleven, saw the Bucs fall behind to a 19-O count but, in doing so, they gave their opponents a good battle. Hoping that the Pirates have learned much from this season, we will look forward to a better record next season. 81 Ronnie Chandler Senior Players Harry Davidson Roy Robbins Richard Heger 82 Charles Owens Mickey Sheets Nothing could stop the pirates as they won over Batesville! Judith Lindboe Ruth Ann Reed Linda Shutters Creating zestful school spirit for the 1957-58 season were these Varsity, unison-trained girls who added that extra zip to all athletic events. Varsity N x t X Reserve Something new was added this year, when the student body elected reserve yell leaders tor the first time. These pert girls, Pat and Marcia, cheered and led yells for the Sap- lings. These girls also helped lead the Pep Club during reserve and varsity games. LEFT TO RIGHT: Patricia Hull and Marcia Wells. When sixty freshmen and sophomore girls con- vened at 7:30 AM. two mornings a week minus lipstick and sleep, they must have been pretty en- thusiastic about something... and those femme fatales of the Pep Club really were! For the Hrst time in the history of G.C.H.S., Booster Club in- itiated this Pep Club to promote lots of good school spirit and more organized cheers. Rhythmic hand, feet, and head motions plus smiling faces and vibrant voices characterized the members of this eager group. By performances at all the home games and pep sessions, wearing such added features as corsages, shakers, head- bands, and Pirate outfits, the Pep Club proved to be a valuable asset to the Pirates' avid cheering section. Pirate Night held added enjoyment for basketball spectators as cheerleaders and team members came leaping through a Pirate head to the lively strains of Pirate Fight Song. The student body, Pep Club, pep band, and cheerleaders co-operated to make this night a success by wearing all sorts of brilliant Pirate costumes and by collaborating in a clever pre-game feature. Let victory be our running mate throughout the rest of '58. This was the winning slogan submitted by senior Mickey Sheets for Booster Club's Annual Sectional slogan contest. The pep session skit was a clever take off on Name That Tune, and emcee Bob McFall selected at random from the audience, to be contestants, students using songs suggest- ing members of the Pirate crew. Staunch Pirate fans enioyed the skit and then prepared to scream their lungs out at the first Sectional tilt. 88 5 0 2' Necchl Elna Sewung Center ,,f XX Your s 1 W U H1 U TUV Beeson s Rexoll Drug Store x m Buulfln um 7f Stephenson s Jewelry Store Public Service Company 111 Franklin Phone- 2-T353 II4 E.
