It was estimated in 21 survey Condueted to determine school needs that hy 1962-63 the enrollment would approximate 1.600 pupils. This alone made nec- essary additional sehool eonstrut tion. However, considerations other than ox'ererowding also prompted the school Construction program. The emnniunily helieved that the children. regardless of number, needed modern schools just as their parents need modern auto- mobiles. tractors. stores. refrigerators, eomhines, and television. Our Schools As They Were The East Elementary School served the community since 1889. -..vp The cramped quarters of the superintendent were in this small room in the high school. When expansion was first considered. our school system consisted of two elementary buildings Cone public and one paroehizlli. one combination elementary and junior- high building. and a high school. 'flu-se huildings. wonderful in their day, became obsolete for school purposes during the past century. While cherishing their memory, Greensburg, with community-wide eo-operation, worked toward the fulfillment of their dream for an ultra-modern school system. lm
