Nationally reeoenifed authorities Cite our Community as unique in that all eleinentziry schools were replaced and a new high sehool was huilt. All eonstruetion was done simultaneously. the huildings heing eoinpleted and oeeupied in 1956-57, At the same time St. fXIary's paroeliial school was expanded and modernized, In the past ten years there has heen an inerease of nearly 400 pupils in the total school population ol Greensburg. It was estimated in 21 survey Condueted to determine school needs that hy 1962-63 the enrollment would approximate 1.600 pupils. This alone made nec- essary additional sehool eonstrut tion. However, considerations other than ox'ererowding also prompted the school Construction program. The emnniunily helieved that the children. regardless of number, needed modern schools just as their parents need modern auto- mobiles. tractors. stores. refrigerators, eomhines, and television. When expansion was first considered. our school system consisted of two elementary buildings Cone public and one paroehizlli. one combination elementary and junior- high building. and a high school. 'flu-se huildings. wonderful in their day, became obsolete for school purposes during the past century. While cherishing their memory, Greensburg, with community-wide eo-operation, worked toward the fulfillment of their dream for an ultra-modern school system. lm 1' J K :f'f ':f r ' U I ha- l I The original high school was built in 1914-15. The only building retained, it will become the Jerman Junior High School for grades six, seven, and eight. This large, rambling structure, the - s West Building, was built in 1863, ' ' added to in 1876, and again in 1899. ' It housed two thirds of the ele- mentary pupils and the junior high school. i 1 7 The Plans Unfold F? It supplies Board of Education quarters, a small audito- rium, and headquarters for four special teachers, as well as the offices of the school superintendent. Completely redecorated and equipped, it is considered among the best in the state. AT RIGHT is shown the entrance to the new administration building. W How the Greensburg Community, rich in tradition and foresight, met its educational challenge has been briefly told in the preceding pages. At the same time the school city was revolutionizing its school facilities, the civil city of Greensburg simultaneously launched an improvement program which brought a com- plete new sewer system, a new water plant, a tower for water storage, a large dam and reservoir to pipe adequate water to the city. a new modern sewage disposal plant, and much resurfacing and relighting of city streets. Certainly, the people of Greensburg can be proud of their achievementsf-'particularly so when they remember that all these improvements have come since 1952. Recognizing that our community now has all of the es- sential requirements and inducements for new industry and growth, the local Chamber of Commerce has embarked on a splendid program, dedicated to a greater Greensburg, and early desirable results are anticipated. The 6'Greensburg Story' has not ended. New challenges will be met and taken in stride! 30 lYmlml-wiclvx'1'n'1r2nitlmu1 in lg-ill . 2 7 , Q 0' S - - -fkimv' ' e Famed tree on court house since 1870 ' ,- 1177 1 W gain? 7 X ..,, ff M Q4 ffifr f 0 f f MIL! Hermann, L. Ewing. ROW 2: M. Ley, G. Lindboe, NVQ-sthafer, D. Ileger, W. Nobbee, R. Robbins. Playing with one returning letterman the Pirate basketball team finished a long season by losing in the second round of the sectional. The team had an excess of height, but not enough experience to add to it. The fact that the team lost several boys at the beginning of the season was another factor in the outcome of the season. Losing only one senior the Pirates will have eleven returning players for next season and should have a good season.
