Not long after the opening of school, the Senior Class completed its organization. A meeting was called one afternoon by the sponsors to meet in Mr. Moeller's room. A spirited session, girls against boys, developed as the balloting got under way. These four Hnally came through, and have shown by their manage- ment of class affairs that the choices made were made right. However, they know their success is measured by the assistance received from the membership of the entire class. GARTH ABRELL Booster Club 341 Tower Tree 43 F. B. L. A, 41 Hi-Y 23. Included in their activities this year was a trip to the state older Boys' Conference at Elkhart. A district fall meeting was also attended at Brookville. A financial project which was undertaken was the selling of cokes at a public function. The Hi-Y is host to the spring conference this year which will place a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of the club. In South Central Confer- ence action the Bucs won two and lost three to land fifth place. Jack Spencer's charges got their schedule off to a poor start by losing to Martinsville and Colum- bus. After taking a forfeit victory from Rushville, North Vernon and Batesville took the Buccaneers' measure in the next two contests. At this point came the turning point in the Pirates' season. Showing an improved attack, the local eleven zipped past Greenfield by a large margin. After taking a setback from Franklin, the Pirates capped the season against Shelbyville by playing their best game. The Pirate - Golden Bear game was for the cellar of the South Central Conference Cat that time it wasn't known that Rushville would have to forfeit their games because one of its players was in- eligiblej. Shelbyville jumped into a two-touch- down lead in the first half, but the Pirates scored just as the half ended. Playing an inspired brand of ball in the second half, the Pirates came back Left to right: Athletic Director. Tom Downey: Freshman basketball ind assistant baseball coach. Chalmers Oak: seventh and eighth rade basketball and football line coach, John Lantis: basketball nd baseball coach, and assistant football, Bill Berberian: and football oach and assistant basketball coach, Jack Spencer. to win the game 18-14 with the win- ning counter coming in the closing minutes. In forming next year's grid squad Jack Spencer will have to replace the nine graduating members of the team. All of the players were an important part in the Pirates' football machine and replacing them will not be an easy task for Coach Spencer. The senior football players are the following: Jim Burkert, Ronald Eckel, Joe Hellmich, Bill Koors, Harold Stier, Bill Stras- burger, Carl Wenning, Bill Wooden, and John Vanderbur. In the all-conference selections four Pirates gained recognition. On the second team Bill Wooden was named as an end. Honorable mention honors were given to guard Jim Burkert, tackle-end Ronald Eckel, and halfback John Vanderbur. Hard-running halfback John Van- derbur was the leading ground-gainer for the Pirates. John carried the pig- skin 66 times the also carried the ball the most timesj for 237 yards. In 44 carries halfback Harold Stier ran up 211 yards for the second highest total. Fullback-quarterback Gene Patterson was third high with 173 yards in 48 at- tempts. Other ball carriers with their yardage are: fullback Don Dudley 95 yards in 43 tries, halfback Gary Up- dike 85 yards in 20 carries, end Bill Wooden 25 yards in Hve tries, and quarterback Jim Cuskaden 22 yards in 11 tries. In the average-yards-per-try depart- ment Wooden had the highest figure, gaining five yards per rush. Harold Stier 4.8 average was second best, while Updike's 4.3 average was third. Other ball carriers with their average are: Patterson 3.6, Vanderbur 3.5, Dudley 2.2, and Cuskaden 2.0. In the Pirates' eight games they were outscored by their opponents 155 points to 52 points. John Vanderbur was the biggest scorer for the Pirates with 18 points earned by three touchdowns. Gene Patterson was runnerup in scoring with two touchdowns for 12 points. Other players who scored with their number of points are: Earl Bowling 7, Harold Stier 6, Don Buell 6, and Bill Wooden 3. Coach Spencer handed out 26 letters this season with nine going to seniors, eight to juniors, and nine to sophomores. In forming next year's team Spencer will have 17 lettermen with which to work, and to fill out the squad there are 18 who won minor letters. With 11 sophomores winning minor or major letters and 15 freshmen earning minor awards football pros- pects for the Pirates seem to have a very bright future. Once during the season a sports writer termed Bill Berberian's 1950-1951 Pi- rates as promising. That's just what they were. In his second year as G. H. S. coach, Berberian molded three seniors, a junior, and a sophomore ol' which only two had any appreci- able varsity experience, into a fast-breaking team of great potential. On a few occasions the Pirates flashed with all their potential, and on such occasions no one could touch the Buc- caneers. The rest of the time the Bucs were a hard driving, fast-breaking team which played their hardest at all times.
