In playing nine scheduled games, the Pirates compiled a record of four wins and five losses. The losses, however, were by very small margins. Outscored by a mere five-point margin 1112 to 1075, the Pirates outplayed the opponents as the statistics show. First downs: Pirates 103, opponents 83. Net yardage gained 1935, opponents 1874. The personnel of the '49-50 football team included Hfteen seniors, eight juniors, ten sophomores and nine freshmen. In confer- ence play, their losses were at the hands ol' Rushville and Connersville. Records were smashed as the five senior regulars-Best, Mount. Platt. Ricke and Westhater-played their last basketball season for the blue and white. Dale Mount, forward for the Pirates, was the leading scorer in the South Central Conference. The single season scoring record of 302 points set by Richard Trobaugh in '43-44 was broken by Mount with a 341 point total. The scoring record 463 points, for a tour- year period set by Trobaugh was broken by Mount and Westhafer. with points totaling 677 and 543 respectively. Single game scor- ing record in the local gym was tied by Mount with a total 23 points in a sectional game against New Point. The Pirate quintet garnered a record breaking total of 1138 points during the year. This mark shattered the previous rec- ord ol' 1039 points made by the 1948-49 Pirates. Another new nigh for the Pirate scoring record was made against Sandusky in the sectional with the Pirates sco1'ing 73 points in one game. The old mark of 72 points was made by the '48-49 Pirates. Coach William Berberian. an ex-Purdue star. started his coaching career by win- ning lrom Columbus and Seymour. A three game slump hit the Pirates, bowing to Rushville, Greenfield and New Castle. Wins over Shelbyville and North Vernon were followed by a Lawrenceburg defeat. A win over Martinsville closed the first half of the season. Director Mr. Niles, Mr. Ben Niles assumed the duties of directing the activities of the music department this fall as a new member of the G. H. S. faculty. The forty members of the G. H. S. chorus, under the direction of Mr. Niles, presented their annual Christmas Concert and spring concert. They also participated in the Choral Festival at Rushville, Indiana in May. After participating in this festival, students selected from the group are eligible to sing in an all state chorus of one thousand voices for Teachers' Institute next fall. The Twelve Little Maids, who were selected from the chorus and directed by Mr. Niles. pei - formed for many local, civic and school organizations and sang several numbers at the chorus concerts. At their performances this year, they appeared in Dutch Maid costumes for the first time. Chorus officers are: president, Robert Frensemeierg vice president. Gene Patterson: secre- tary-treasurer, Janet McLaughlin. Q. aff is amz G. H. S. band launched their musical year by acting as host for the Good Neighbor Festival. Members of high school bands from Columbus, Connersville, Rushville and Shelbyville and their directors participated in the event. Under the direction of Ben Niles, the band played for the home football and basketball games and also per- formed for the community by leading the annual Hallow- een and Christmas parades. Mr. Niles was elected secretary of the Class B division of the State Music Association at Terre Haute in Decem- ber.
