I' State Solo and Ensemble Contestants We are happy to say that twenty two IHLISICIEIIIS out of th1rty one were eligible for state contest this sprlng In or der to go to state the contest ants htd to win fnst in the dis tllCt contest Our dI'I'lblt1OLlS mus1c1ans di rected by Don W1lson yentured forth on February 21 to the R Pl grounds of Indiana State Teach ers College at Terre Haute M J B S Sv With the cheers of the pep ses sions honorlng the contestants still rmglng ln thelr ears they downed five more firsts The soloists who placed first were Gladys Johnston clarlnet and Maxine Pleak barl tone sax others placing first were Larry Moore Gladys Johnston and Marilyn Jones clari net tr1o Richard Stout Gorden Sprlngmelr and Erm1l Johnston cornet trio The Twelve Little Maids also chalked up another first to keep the perfect record smce the begmmng of th1s orgamzatlon in 1944 Members of thls group under the direction of Mr Wilson were Patsy Bokelman Mary Lou Tlchenour Bonnie McNew Marilyn Jones Bonnie Wllllams Jo Ann Rogers Mertie McNeeley Theresa Nayarra Barbara McKahan Mary Wooden Joyce Ross and Joan Aly ea Shazer received a second division rating Student conductor Larry Moore placed third We are proud that this group of willing workers who under Mr Wllson s strict super 3181011 haye brought even more honors to G H S ann Twelve L1tt1e Ma1dS BWII BMN T BMKh W R MJ MN J ly N The Twelve Little Maids were selected this past year by Don Wllson G H S muslc 1n structor through the trvouts wh1ch were open to every high school girl These twelve g1rls had the best blendmg yoices The sopranos were Patsy Bokelman Bonnie McNew Jo Ann Rogers and Marv Lou Tlchenor the second sopranos Joan Aly ea Barbara Mc Kahn Theresa Nayarra and Mary Wooden the altos Marlly Jones Myrtle McNeeley Joy ce Ross and Bonita W1l1l3mS Gladys Johnston seryed as accompamst This group originated ln 1944 under the directlon of V C Shaw the music d1rector at that tlme and has been actlye ever smce partlcxpatmg ln the District and the State Con tests and Slllglng' before varlous groups and oragmzatlons They have been eligible to enter the State Solo and Ensemble contest every year after wmnmg a first d1y1s1on rating ln the Dsitrlct Contest Thev once again upheld this tradltion and placed first in the State this year J . , I 5 I v ,. gran ,915 Quill and Scroll J Quill and Scroll a journalistic organization IS the only national honorary soclety in G H S The admission requirements are Two years of outstanding work on elther the school paper or the annual a C average a upperclassman and a piece of workn sen to the society for approval W SP J K ecommendatlons are made b A J ly w lx M rt the faculty advisor Miss BCSSIQ Romans Ten were selected and lnitlated into Quill and Scroll this year all of whom were mem bers of the Senior class They were Joan Alxea Daxid Hadler Jack Hungerford Joyce Kammerlmg Wllna Konzelman Robert Marlowe Betty Sprlnger Myra Dell Sturgis Mild red T1tus and Barbara Wells All these 1H1t13t6S were members of the Breeze and Tower Tree except for Barbara who was the Tower Tree editor There were already three active members in this group who had been 1n1t1ated in the school term 1946 47 making the total membership thirteen The officers during' the past year were Dan Austin Pres Jean Ernstes V Pres and Mary Wooden Secy Treas Tom Batterton winning first IH the state Latin contest and Jean Ernstes winning second ln the state English contest be stowed new honors upon Greens burg High School h The four Latln students W o entered the d1str1ct contest at State EI1gl1S1'1 and Latln Rushv1lle were Tom Batterton Sara Loyd Wanda Buckley and Contestants Six English students entered th1s contest Tean Ernstes Mary Ruth Pa terson Myra Dell Sturgls Helen Buell Phvl 11s Doerflmger and Marilyn Montgomery All ten students placed in the district thus making them el1 gible to particlpate in the state contest This IS the first tlme 1n ten years that G H S has parti clpated in the Indiana UHIYGF sity Achlexement Testing Pro gram Ribbons were awarded the first and second place wlnners B 1 M S, ,Z M M P M 1n the state contest , I l L1 . !
