He is one of those Hi-Y boys who likes to plan parties espe- cially for the girls. HELEN SMITH Helen's willingness to please will aid her in carrying out her de- sire, to be a nurse. She belongs to the Sunshine Society which could not do without her because of her workability. RODERICK TETRICK Rod has the typical childhood desire. Who knows, perhaps some day he will reside at the White House. He has been on the sports staffs of the Tree City Breeze and the Tower Tree. BONNIE JO STEVENSON Our Bonnie Lies over the Ocean. For her we predict many exciting adventures as a Red Cross nurse overseas. She has played in the Greensburg High School Band for two years. MARY ELIZABETH SAMUELS As a commercial student she in- tends to become a private secre- tary, but our guess is it won't be for long. Mary Liz has been an active and responsible mem- ber of G. A. A. would have received better poems from his senior English class if he had waited until spring to ask for them. Probably those people in love could have produced some mas- terpieces. You know well that old saying In the spring a young man's fancy -. 2 l22l HAROLD HOLING Ile has already made a good start in his chosen profession, basketball. Commonly known as Popeye, he was able to hit those long shots from anywhere on the floor. DORTHA ELLEN TUDOR She will leave her country for great Paree, a designer of fame and glory to be. Outstanding in school for her forensic ability, Dot debated for two years on the team. HELEN TOWER She expects to take a beauty course - not to improve herself, for that isn't needed-but so she may improve others. She may be side-tracked to become a saleswoman at which she al- ready excels. EDWARD WELAGE Ed has the right idea. He isn't concerned with what he does as long as he does it successfully. No doubt he gets his wise crax at Kroger's, where he is em- ployed. G. ROSS DORSETT Not a senior, but a capable sen- ior class sponsor, he has headed the class of '38 during its junior and senior years, and very suc- cessful years they have been. A neat sum has been collected in the sea chest from selling candy at games, holly wreaths during the Yule season, and sponsoring a food market. Now that they have their sea legs, they can settle down to the last years of their voy- age. No more are they hindered by those characteristic blunders which inexperienced seamen invariably make. From now on, all will be full speed ahead. Full of small airs of self conscious sophistication, they pressed on undaunted, supremely sure of themselves. Vim. vigor, and vitality are personified by them. They have served their appren- ticeship with enthusiasm and have made rapid strides toward their goal of being officers of the deck, and have the privilege of looking back over two years' successful cruise along their charted course. FRESHMEN UN ISUARIJ the gallant ship Greeiislnirg lligh School the fresh- men as lioatswains are occupied with the task of learning the ropesfl ln most cases they are under the command ot' the higher oilicers, but at times they show their sea-faring ability and receive commendatiwn from the officers for their admirable accomplishments. In the fall of '37 a hundred and three landsmen went down to the sea for the first time and it was Hanchors aweighn for a cruise ol' l'our years. A great respect for superiors caused the freshmen to overlook the hyper-critical attitude of their superior officers and instead to idolize and look up to the upperclassmen in envy. Now, as they are ahout to ohtain shoreleave for three months. the seamen who will soon he quartermasters or sopho- mores are waiting for the day when they will watch other lands- men appear on deck. Foremost in bringing treasures to the hold of the Greensburg ship ot' fame, is the Agriculture division. Ably in- structed by the experienced and de- pendable teacher, A. W. Mcfracken, the members of the Ag club won both state and national honors. This last year was by no means an exception to their previous records. At the State Fair Alfred Doles placed iirst in the 4-H Hereford junior year- ling class. The judging team, consist- ing of John Stewart, Willard Hain- bridge, and Earl Barnes, with Forest Stevenson as alternate, kept pace by winning the right to compete in the National Dairy Judging contest at Columbus, Ohio. Outside of this, many other entries in the beet' diri- sion won high prizes. A gain at the Round l'p held at l'urdue university, the judging team, this time consisting oi' Morgan Miers. Willard llainbridge, and Earl lflarnes, won recognition by winning first in beet' judging. l'reparation is now under way for the contests in which they were so well represented last year. A Con- servation club has been organized which holds monthly meetings. They plan to send a delegate to the annual meeting which will be held at some state park. Having many graduates out in the sea of life who are making .a success, the club cannot be given too much credit. Adding to their triumphs ot' previous years. the team this year placed in the Big Sixteen ol' forensic compe- tition, without losing a single debate until the finals in the regional. The KIllfIlAltSt0XYIl team proved too tough a hurdle to clear and the locals were 9623. Enierging unscathed from the l'urdue debate conference, the team tied with Arsenal Technical high school ot' Indianapolis for first pliice in the Anderson tournament. The squad then began preparing for the sectional meet. Not even threatened for top honors in the first round of the gristmill ol' competition which eventually turns out a state cham- pion, the deliaters looked into the fu- ture with too much confidence. Listed among their victims were Hammond, Elmhurst, Anderson, lien Davis, Leb- anon, Fairmount, Shelbyville and Rushville. On the affirmative were Dortha Ellen Tudor and Earl F. Riley. Fin- ishing his second vear in this capaci- tv. he expects to place the Pirates in good standing in this division. The highest honor that can be bestowed upon an athlete of Greensburg High is the receiving of the Athletic Medal award- ed annually by the class of 1921 for the best mental attitude while playing. The '38 medal goes to Jim Mendenhall. As varsity yell lead- ers, Helen Cooke and Paul White, with George Link and Mil- lie Marshall as assist- ants, ably supported the Pirates. With their 'Pep' and 'Flip Flops' the quartet helped to push the Pirate Ship on its voyage after plunder. Participating in the South Central Conference for the first time this year, the Pirates made an excellent showing in basketball. To start the season ofl' with a bang, they scored an initial victory over Jackson, the County Champs. They then went ahead to complete a fine season with sixteen wins and four losses. and lost only one game before Christmas. an over-time with Rich- mond. This record placed them in second position in the conference race. Some of the outstanding vic- tories were over such teams as Green- castle, Columbus and Rushville who were later three of the sixteen final- ists in the state tourney. After completing this fine season, the Pirates advanced through the sectional and on to the regional in tourney play. There they were elim- inated by Columbus, who later went to the finals. BOLING On the team since it start- ed three years ago, he capa- bly holds his own in pole vaulting. HALL Naturally scientifically in- clined, he makes an excel- lent pole vaulter into the stratosphere. GIBBONS Training as serious opposi- tion to Don Lash or Glenn Cunningham. As the major spring sport Greensburg High School has adopted track. This is the third year for the sport with Ross Dorsett as head coach for the last two. Spring training began with a large turn-out of thinly-clads. They have six meets scheduled for the '38 sea- son including the sectional and conference meets which are held at Rushville on May 7th and 14th respectively. With three years' experience behind and with their basketball tradition back of them, the Pirates have high hopes for the outcome of their competition on the cinders. This season's track schedule with scores follows: April 8at Batesville 35V2, Greensburg 8295. April 12 at Waldron 54, Greensburg 47. April 20 at Shelbyville 43, Greensburg 40.
