CLASS HISTORY I am the Txger, symbol of the Class of '54 I have fol lowed them through four years of hlgh school, watchmg over them, sharmg thelr Joys, honors, and embarrass ments In 1950 when they were Freshles, I was fed and watered by thelr Advlsors, Mr Ayres and Mr Bolin I plcked Dlck Foxx as Presldent, Dave Galley as Veep Dawn LeMome as Secretary, and Joe Moore as Treasurer At Homecommg I hopped mto atuba and peeked over the rxm so I could see what a cute palr of attendants Dawn LeMome and Tom Mellmger were I was also around glving mstruct1ons when Gene Clemons cast the Freshman vote on Student Councxl Strange thmgs happened that year Durmg a scrlmmage wlth Spr1ngf1eld,some of the Freshmen played, even though they hadn't enough helmets to go around A John Beese started on the field, the person, whom he was replacing, threw him hls helmet Instead of catchmg lt, our valiant Johnny stood there watching it come hurlmg towards hlm Result Johxmy spent the rest of the year slngmg, All IWant For Chrlstmas Is My Two Front Teeth Also that year, Mr Kleckner caught Ruth Gelb and Dawn LeMo1ne m the Library half dressed One mght after school before cheerleading tryouts, they were practlcmg some cheers, and as they were both wearmg rather tlght slurts, they locked the door and belng sensxble gxrls off came the sklrts However, Mr Kleckner curlous about the strange sounds lssumg forth, got h1s key and unlocked the door Result three of the reddest faces ever seen around G H S As a perfect endmg for the year, Mary Ann McCortney was nommated for Strawberry Queen, and to the great Joy of the Class, was chosen Queen Durmg the summer the Class held ap1cn1c at Lake O'Spr1ngs Park After a summer's rest, I was brlght and fresh to steer my Class through its Sophomore year I was helped by the Advlsors, Mr Pence and Mr Vandever Dlck Groves served them well as Presldent, wlth Dave Galley as Veep agam Dawn LeMome wrote the letters and the purse strlngs were turned over to Mary Ann McCortney The Homecommg Queen and Kmgwere attended by two dazzlmg Sophomores, Loretta Olemck and Tom Randall The b1g gest event of the year was the recelving of sweaters and Jackets After much controversy, they chose scarlet and gray as Class colors, and selected the Txger lthat's mel, deslgned by John Rxemenschnelder, as emblem The ayes and nays on the Student Councxl were given by Ruth Gelb and Gene Clemons They chose Norma Keener as Straw berry Queen candxdate, and she, too, was elected Queen The Jumor year started out wlth a bang John Beese was the hard working flrst c1t1zen Ruth Gexb served as h1s understudy, wlth Dawn LeMome keeping the mmutes and Phyllis Mlller d01I'lg the banking Norma Keener, Mary Ann McCortney, and Phyll1s M1ller were hxgh stepping majorettes Homecommg Attendants were two of the most popular Junlors, Ruth Gexb and Bob Begert The rlngs which arrlved on December 4, made fine Christmas pres ents The1r play, That's Our Boy , was presented on May 5 Bob Boettler had the male lead with Ruth Geib Just per fect Ill the part of hls mean little slster The play was dl rected by Mr Pence and Mr Kohler, wlth Carol Schnelder as Student Dlrector Thelr big money makmg prolects were the sale of Frxendshlp Books, a scrap drive, and the sale of OhioSesqu1centenn1a1 llcense plates Several of the boys were mducted mto H1 Y Winner of the d1str1ct Prince of Peace Contest was Ruth Gelb That May was decldedly the most excltmg month of the year To start lt off, three glrls, Velma Barbour,Yvonne Klmmel, and Phyllls Mxller, were xnducted mto the Natlonal Honor Socxety Wxlma Johnson made a stunnmg Strawberry Queen Attendant The Jumor Semor Banquet and Prom was held at Twln Lakes on May 29 Many boys recelved letters 1n varlous sports All m all, It was a very busy year, Just packed w1th fun and good tlmes, thanks to the1rOff1cers, to Loretta Olemck, Dawn LeMo1ne, and Hayes Austm, the Student Councll Rep resentatxves, and to the Advlsors, Mrs Garman, and Mr Vandever A Class p1cn1c was held durlng the summer at Monroe Falls The f1rst week of the Semor year, they chose Dlck Foxx as the fxrst wheel and Jerry Domokur as the second wheel Dawn LeMome kept wrxtmg the mmutes and Phyllis Miller banked more money They also selected Ruth Geib as edltor of the yearbook and Yvonne Kxmmel as her asslst ant The1r Advisors were Mlss Patrlck and Mr Kleckner The Student Counc1lRepresentat1ves were Carol Schnelder, Phyllxs M1ller, Jerry Domokur, and Jack Bloom Passmg the p1gsk1n were Hayes Austm, Bob Begert, and Jack Bloom, fCapta1nsJ, Bob Baltrmlc, Gene Beane, John Beese, Gene Clemons, Jerry Domokur, Dlck Fon, Dave Galley, Jack Hefner, Gordon Smlth, Ph1l Stone, and Jack Wylle The three CRPCRIIIS along wlth Jack Hefner and Gene Beane made the All County Team Jack Hefner recexved the most valuable player award Phyll1s Mlller was Drum Majorette whlle Norma Keener and Mary Ann McCortney were the stars of the lme Thelr Homecommg Queen was Chxqulta Starkey and the Kmg was Gene Clemons They were crowned by Mary Ann Mc Cortney and Jerry Domokur, and attended by Loretta Olemck and Hayes Austm The Semor Play was Meet Corl1ss Archer Ruth Ge1b played Corl1ss w1th John Beese as the young man wxth the volce , Dexter Franklm Mr Guess dlrected the play Afterward the class attended a party gxven by Barbara Hughes The H1 Y elected Ruth Gelb as thelr Queen for the All C1ty H1 Y Dance held on November 24 Busy makmg baskets for the team were Jack Bloom and Dean Stewart, fCapta1nsl, Gene Clemons, Dave Galley, Fred Neldert, Ph1l Stone, and Dlck W1ne Jack Bloom made the All County Team and was the highest scorer 1n Summit County The Class held a Sweet heart Dance on February 12 The ent1re school voted for the most popular boy and glrl from a 11st selected by the Seniors The wmners were Ruth Gexb and Jack Bloom H1 L1te Queen was RuthGe1b Dawn LeMome was Crowner and Norma Keener was Crown Bearer The Attendants W e re Mary Ann McCortney, Frances Cowger, Wllma Johnson and Dxane Roluch Escorts were Hayes Austm, Bob Begert, Gene Clemons, Jack Hefner, Ph1l Stone,D1ck Wme, and Jack Wylle The dance was held on March 13 Commencement speakers were John Beese, Dawn LeMo1ne, and Yvonne Klmmel Runmng and h1gh1umping were Hayes Austm, Gene Beane, Bob Begert, Jack Bloom, Jerry Domokur, Dick Foxx, Jack Hefner, and Dick Wme Pltch ing and battlng were Bob Baltrinxc, Barry Callesen, Bob Delaney, Toby Scott, Gordon Smith, Dean Stewart, Ph1l Stone, and Dlck Wme Baccalaureate services were held on May 30, and on June 1, the Class met for the last time to present their Commencement Program I wiped a large tear from my eye as Iwatched each member go h1s individual way, but I reallzed that as the emblem of the Class of '54,
