CLASS PROPHECY As I sat there listening to the various records of my collection, which each member of my class had contributed to, it took me back to the past and each record seemed prophetic of the person who had given it to me. As the strains of “It’s So Peaceful in the Country drifted over the room I could see Louella Mitchell Ronald teaching Eugene Jr. the necessity of obedience. The record switched to ‘Take It Easy” which always reminds me of Gusty Clark who changed his snail-like high school pace to meet the rushing F. B. I. job he holds now in Washington D. C. I was almost blasted from my seat by the familiar tune, “Pistol Packin’ Mama” which brings to my mind Cytha Mitchell who’s totin a six shooter as night watchman for Curtiss Wright. “In a Little Red School House” reminds me of Hortense Milby who will teach at Newt in the future. “Blues in the Night” brings to my mind Frankie Patrum, who is doing nightly performance as the blues singer at the Stork Club. ‘Take Me Back To Louisville”, a song that always reminds me of Louise Bennette, who will play a heroine’s part as a nurse in World War II. A patriotic spirit arose within me as I played “Anchors Aweigh . My thoughts turned to the boys in my class who will choose the Navy as their career. They are Harold Pierce, Eugene Salsman. Vernon Shuflett, Jr., Parson Money, and William Dean Moss. While listening to the record, “Walking the Floor Over You”, I could hear the footsteps of Bobby Upton and Calvin Chaney patroling the halls at school. Their footsteps have become more militaristic along with those of Richard Shuffett, Hobart Judd, Merrill Thompson, William Loyall, and Thomas Goff. It must have been Charlotte Shuffett and Aurelia Jameson that the song, Two Jills in a Jeep was written for. They will become 1st Lieutenants in the Women’s Army Corps. It will be for them that Winnie Mudd will stay home and raise food for victory. While ‘Three Little Sisters” was playing, I could hardly help thinking of our trio of Virginia Finn, Leontine Moore, and Thelma Buchanan, who in the future will sing at the Metropolitan Opera House. The record School Days” was given to me by Christine Jones. Odiellia Warf. and Anita Gupton, who will become three of Green County’s most outstanding teachers. “Breathless” could not have been more appropriately given by anyone than Mildred Gumm and Fanny Sullivan. In the future it will not be their last minute rushing to school but gurrying to meet their social obligations in Summersville. What’s this? Could a Junior have slipped a record into my collection? Doubtless this record “I Married the Girl With the Strawberry Curl” describes Arlene Bale. “Playmates” used to describe Allene and Bemadine Shirley but later they will decide to work together in Foreign Service with the Red Cross. The song—“Please Take A Letter, Miss Brown”—reminds me of Exie Bishop, Mary Gumm, Dorothy Paxton, and Hallie Montgomery, who after completing a stenographic course at Bryant Stratton will accept excellent positions with the War Dept, at Washington. Rosie the Riveter” reminds me of the cousins Maxine Faulkner and Shivel Scroggy, who will become chief riveters at Vultee Aircraft Corporation. The record changed again to My Sister and I . Of course this was presented to me by Dorothy and Geneva Wilcoxson. Their partnership will carry on into the business world where they will be co-owners of the Drug Store at Gabe. What is this? Oh, it’s the Merry Widow Waltz”. It was given to me by the war widows Julia Judd, Nellie Sandidge, and Wilma Gumm, who will settle down to a happy home life after the war.
