CLASS HISTORY Twelve years ago slxty ewcxt d youngsters entered the first grade room at G H S where we were greeted by Mrs Mae Slmpson popular first grade teacher st1ll in our school Of those s1xty ten are graduating thls year They are Peggy Rogers Vlrglllla Colvm Tenabel Lowe Tony McK1nney Joan Taylor Jean Hodges Levert Clark Myrla Larxmore Smlth Perry and James A Vaughn Many of the s1xty left us for various reasons and other frlends Jom d us on our march through the grades vthere we got acquamted w1th the mult1pl1cat1on tables and learned the world wasnt square after all By the tlme we graduated from the exghth grade under Mrs Avery Shuffetts d1rect1on we xx ere only twenty five strong The next fall found 68 starry eyed but scared Freshman enrolling 1n Algebra Engllsh Sclence and Cxvics We were sponsored by M1ss Martha Kathryn Lamkm and Mr Vxctor Henderson The Class oflicers were Smlth Perry Pres Tenabel Lowe V Pres John Taylor Secretary and Henry W Mays Treasurer Our prlnclpal act1v1ty of the year was at the carmval when we presented The Hall of Horror whlch was a huge success The hlghest scholastle average was made by Joan Taylor When we enrolled nn our Sophomore year we found Leon and Lur e Cantrell Wllburn Carter Vlfglllla Larlmore Morgan and Ruth Pepper Norman Marcum Sh1vel Scroggy Ralph Shaw Leon Skelly Baxter W1l'ierson Lola Blggs Dorothy Caven Jlmmy Cox Meryl D1sney Mar3or1e Ford Charles Plckett Elmore Russell Imogene Tucker Esa Warren Geneva Walls Betty Jackson and Hllda McAll1ster were missmg and Frances Buckner MarJor1e Sharp and Noel Keltner had Jomed our class The class officers were Smlth Perry Pres James Lew1s V Pres Joan Taylor Secretary and Peggy Rogers Treasurer We also had new sponsors M1ss Margaret Clayton and Mr Monroe Ayres who IS now ln the army The Gay Nlne t1es Revue glven at the carnnal was the mam event of the year The hlghest scho1ast1c average was made by Theresa Marshall Our Jun1or year was a happy one mdeed Agam we had M1ss Clayton for a sponsor who prepared and directed our carn1val program Jun1or Folhes Our play A Ready Made Famlly was a record breaker w1th the rece1pts amounting to S178 We entertained the senlors by takmg them on a tour of the Bluegrass R9g10H of Kentucky We collected 1 154 lbs of scrap iron for the scrap metal dr1ve Our class officers were Smlth Perry Pres Ruth Sart1n V Pres FIHIS Scott Secretary and Betsy Morrison Treasurer The hlghest scholastlc average agam was made by Theresa Marshall Of our sophomore members Doyle Akm Dorothy Marcum Joyce Chaudom Ben Marcum Marjorle Sharp and Dorothy Cooke were found IT1lSSlIlg and Ruth Sart1n was a welcome new comer to our class In Sept 1942 we Jubnlanlly embarked on our final and most momentous year at G H S We found Alene Harmon Alene Judd Betsy Morrison Louxse Bennette and Jul1a Rucker had left us and later 1n the year Lols Morrlson and Dora Vaughn gave up school for marrlage Our Carnn al feature was the semor mn strel Our dlamond ring cand1date Joan Taylor won the contest and Ruth Sartm our cand1date won the honor of queen of the carn1val On Dec 16th we became the proud possessors of class r1ngs Under the magmficent SUPSYVISIOH of M1ss Clayton we gave our Sen1or play My Cous1n from Texas It was most enthus 1ast1cally rece1ved by the audlence and the rece1pts S215 65 broke all records for any program glven by school talent Our class ofiicers thls year were Smlth Perry Pres Tenabel Lowe V Pres F1n1s Scott Treasurer and Vxrgmla Colvm Secretary Theresa Marshall's SCh018St1C record for the first three years together Wllh her semor work won her the honor of V316d1CtOFlHD Tenabel Lowe rece1ved second honors as Salutatorlan A splendid attendance record was also made by Fxnls Scott who was not absent a day 1n four years of hxgh school As semors we gave S33 25 to the Red Cross and S30 00 toward a plaque for our soldxer graduates Last but not least we vuant to thank the Jumors for the lovely party they gave us We are xery happy as vue graduate but vm r gret l awng G H S We smcerely apprecxate the gu1d'1nce of Mzss Cla5 ton and Mr Sanders We reallze also that vue owe much of our success to the support of the othcr classes and to the loyalty of the patrons of our school May the class of 43 be loyal alumm .
