LLASS HISTORY On the mornxng of September 4 1028 ten members of the pr sent semor class sought admlttance to the portals of a room called first glad These ten member were Marlanna Wh1tlock D1x1e Patrum Elizabeth Chastam Robert Shuffett Bllly Shuffett Henry Rhea Tucker Gumn Moss Leachman W1ll1am Allen Rogers J B Henderson and Joe Rogers Mrs Maye Sxmpson mtroduced us to such well known characters as Bo p ep Jack and Jxll and The Three Bears In our second year st1l1 under M1ss Maye our class roll was mcreased by four new members Dorothy Turner Ann Cantrell Kathleen Taylor and Barbara Walton Our th1rd and fourth years were spent under the supervlsxon of M1ss El1zabeth Hodges durmg whlch tlme Elxzabeth Shalkun and Tommy Sanders Jomed our band Medleval In our fifth and s1xth ye rs we were d1v1d d 1nto two sectxons and worked under the guldance of MISS Clar s Curry and M1ss Paullne Pendl ton Here we conquered such glants as the multlpllcatlon tables and felt that we knew prac t1cally everythlng 1n the hall of learn1ng Our class was reunlted ln the seventh and eighth grades under Mxss Pansy Wllcoxson who sponsored our first famous stage product1on The Barn door and Baleboy Clrcus Four new members Jolned us th1s year June Fnnls Edward Farrls Denn1s Gumm and Lucllle Slmker Happy and trlumphant we mad our debut 1nto h1gh school on September 4 1936 Numerous county pup 1 1n reased our class roll to the unequaled enrollment of n1nety four over whom Mrs Kate Bax ton preslded We won our first freshman vlc tory ln the elect1on of our candldate Kathl en Taylor as queen of the carnlval Due to varxous causes we lost several of our classmates that year They were Mary Lee Buchanan Earl Bale Crawford Cox Foster Fmn James Judd Harold Larlmore Dorothy Mllby Mahauta Nunn Rachel Meadows Edward Tucker Ph1ll1p Clark Martha E Prultt Walter Paxton Ray Coffey Mllton Shuffett and Ann Larlmore In our second year we were aga1n dxvnded 1nto two groups Tll1S tlme under M1ss Margaret Clayton and M1ss Maxm Tucker The b ggest event of th1s year was our Larnxval productlon Hollywood Revue whlch broke all records IH queen of the carnlval Thls year Magdallne Wnlson and Jun1or Enms Jom d us and Edward Farrls Maxne Henderson Marne Mllby Roscoe Squ1res Jlmmy Blbo Fred gmac Belvlna Graham Beatrlce Prlce Ray Price Ray Reeves and Rachel Rogers e us Mr V1ctor Henderson replaced M1ss Tu ker as co sponsor vutl M1ss Clayton 1n our Junlor year Under thelr guldance we staged our first play The R d Headed Stepchlld Our Carmval feature Showboat broke all records 1n recelpts for the second consecut1ve year and our Junlor candxdate Barbara Walton was elected queen of the carmval We entertaxned the sen1ors wlth a banquet uslng a flower garden as the settmg Elwood McK1nnev Jomed us th1s year and Leona Berry Marne Hurlgan Tara Hancock and Magdalm Wllson left us On September 4 1939 sutty five sennors Jovfully embarked most eventful year at G H S The boys w re put und r the care Clayton and the glrls wlth Mxss Sarah Gravenstexn Some of the performances th1s year were our mmstrel we called th1s The Then followed our carmval features wlth The H1t Parade our Toper 'lavern Here hovtcxer vxe mu t not neglect to mentlon on thelr last and of MISS Margaret outstandxng class Swanee Jubllee semor play Tea the Junlor Senlor banquet sponsored by the Junlors Much to our sorrow we lost two members Ellls McMahan and Leona Johnson who preferred to JOIU the ranks of the Jumors Our senlor candidate Marlanna Whltlock also won the honor of queen of the carnlval Our class has the d1st1nct1on of belng the largest class ever to graduate from G H S We feel that we have played an lmportant part ln all school act1v1t1es and w1ll remaln a shmmg example for future classes So lt IS w1th a feeling of mlngled prlde and regret that we resign our exalted posltlons to the Junlors but we shall always cherxsh the memory of our h1gh school days We are proud of the record that we have made but we reallze that wlthout the other classes and thexr sponsors the guldance of Mr Sanders our superln tendent and the energetlc work of our sponsor M1ss Clayton 1n dlrectmg our act1v1t1es such success would not have been possible DIXIE PATRUM '1 ' . . , e ' ' , sa , an S Z , , Y . .
