At the same time you will be viewing the architects of tomorrow. These are the people who will run our government and work toward world peace. These are the people who will be our workers, executives, and housewives. You are one of them. We have strived to create, for you future archi- tects, a picture of your high school lite as a constant reminder of days spent at Greensburg High. In tu- ture years we hope that ycu will be able to slip back to the past with your Brown 81 White, and remember the teachers, classes, and friends who helped form your foundation for future years. ,, ,,-M M fl 1 f-fi, ,ff ' 4 -5 n 6--f C A 4 x x x x x --. .4 . The primary function of the ad- ministration is ofifering services to the stu- dents of Greensburg High School through the education programs, instruction, and guidance services. Without the supervision ofthe broad academic and vocational program by both the School Board and the adminis- trators, the students of Greensburg would not attain the fine degree of ac- complishment that has marked the graduate of G. Shaping Th t ds Of Tomorrow's Leaders I SENIOR HOME-ROOM TEACHERS Standing: Messrs. Schuster, Bloom, Weber, MacNamara, Stefanilc. Seated: Misses Johnston, Trefts, Wineman, McCormick, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Dailey, Miss Kirchner, When we have been out of school long enough that our memories are beginning to grow hazy about many ot the things we did here, it is probably that our one un- clouded memory will be our teachers. Of these, our senior homeroom teachers will be the most unforgettable. What member of Mr. MacNamara's homeroom will ever forget his eftervescent personality? Or for that matter which stu- dent in his P.O.D. and Social Studies classes will forget this towering Scotchman's love cf a good joke? As tor the football players he helped coach, they all have a good word for Mac . 14 Omce Secretary, Jim Mart: afffv f iw at .Q W7 1 .M i N 6--A . All ot us have a soft spot in our hearts tor this good time enthusiast whose bark is worse than ner bite. On special occasions, fncybe tor assern- .--xxx biies or extra curricular activities, how often was the name Mr, Taylor mentioned inthe way of giving thanks. New to the student body in 56 , his presehce was evident in n'any of our successful theatrical under- talcings. Who is the athlete that hasnt been in- 'N ?i1-QN FACULTY X , - -, z Q Huenced or perhaps a little terrified by Mr. Stefanik? To the incoming Freshman, he' is someone to glance at from a distance with lowered eyes. However, ask his wrestlers or the boys on the football team, and they will tell you of a swell fellow who always did the best for his boys, who in turn did their best for him. Turning to a different department, the commercial students always knew who it was when a whizz went by their doors. Mr. Shuster, head of the department, also helped run the golf and wrestling squads. His days were always busy ones. The quiet firmness and yet wonderful humor of Mrs. Jackson was another must in the commercial course. If you were to step inside, though, you would find that this is all part of the relaxed atmosphere that helps develop good secretaries and sales- men. Another ball of fire in the commercial department was Miss Knoll. Who will for- get her rousing pep speeches in assembly, when she helped cheer our boys on to victory? Maybe we will remember her most though for the guidance she gave in regard to our Soiree. The memory of our celestially decorated gym on Soiree night will be one never lost. A big thanks goes to Miss Knoll for a job well done. You boys, in the future when you are eating that delightful meal whipped up by the little woman , can be thankful for the teaching of Mrs. Dailey. When your clothes are mended, your house clean, and the little woman still looks glamorous, you can also be thankful for a little extra sub- iect that Mrs. Dailey always throws in- her charm course. The well-traveled members of our 'Fac- ulty who made classrooms more interesting with their tales were Miss Johnston and S FRESHMAN HOME-ROOM TEACHERS Standing: Mr. Garrity, Mr. Fausold, Mr. Hood, Mr. Huntley, Mr. Slezak. Seated: Miss Custer, Miss Harlin, Miss Fisher, Mrs. Quigley, Miss O'Neil, l , X i FACULTY 20 Miss Wineman. Every Senior will remem- ber the lively English literature course of- fered by Miss Johnston. Miss Johnston's own experiences in England and her vivacity in telling them added to the won- der of this class. Will you ever forget her perfect mimic of Sir Englishman? If you're dreaming of a trip to Hawaii, chances are that you have run across Miss Wineman in your days at G. H.S. After hearing Miss Wineman tell of this island paradise, we would have liked to pack up and head for Hawaii. But since this was impossible, Miss Wineman's classes were a good substitute. D. with Mr. Weber will always be fond of this big guy with the quiet way. His unorthodox tests helped keep many a student on his toes. The answer to the Vocational Industrial boys dream was Mr. Bloom. His fascinat- ing Physics and Trig classes kept these boys interested in their work at all times. His love cf hunting and fishing and the many experiences he had enioying his hobby also aided in making his course a favorite. A new addition to our teaching staff who quickly slipped into the G. H. S. way of life was Miss Kirchner. Miss Kirchner in her first year at G. H. S. certainly pushed our extra-curricular program and did all she could to make her homeroom activity conscious. Holding all of these homerooms togeth- er and seeing that they worked as a group was our class sponsor, Miss McCormick. Those of us lucky enough to have had her for a teacher were fascinated by her bub- bling personality and sense of humor. Much cf the success of the Senior Class of Greens- burg High School and a hearty thanks should be attributed to Miss McCormick. The Seniors wish to salute these their homeroom teachers. They carried with them fond hopes for entertainment, education, and victory. With right hands raised, our new S. G.A. officers vowed to uphold the duties of their offices. Our school year was launched. October brought our first entertain- ment. The seniors displayed their musical skills in their final talent assembly. Dis- aster struck, October 21, in the form of little blue cards as the first six weeks drew to a close. County Institute and a needed rest seemed iust compensation. A happy conclusion to our vacation was the mar- riage of Li'l Abner fWayne Wolffj and Daisy Mae CSuzie Keeneri in typical dogpatch fashion. Amid cheers and encouragement from the crowd, our boys emerged with a 7-0 victory over our traditional rivals, the Jay- hawks. To give vent to our exhuberance, we enioyed a half day celebration the fol- lowing Monday. lo and Behold was the call as the seniors once again took the spotlight and presented the class play on November 18. Another vacation-this time to give thanks for our many blessings. Basketball, snow, and the Christmas rush constituted this joyous month. Three faiths stood united, February 17th, to uphold our Ameri- can heritage of religious tolerance and one- ness with God. On February 24th the final paid assembly was presented by the S. G. A. We were fortunate this year to have many interesting and educational assemblies of this type. lions or lambs? The sophomores en- tered timidly, but with their best foot for- ward for their first talent assembly, came out a roaring success. On March 'l6th we were enthralled by the music of Rosalie , every girl became a princess, each boy a prince charming. APWL Back to school-this time with Easter eggs to add color to our routine lunches. On April 12-13 and against a background of Broadway brilliance, the Dolphin Club dazzled spectators in this year's Aquacade. The Commercial Club assembly proved to be different and entertaining as always. The forces of the three classes joined in one final talent assembly. Blaring trumpets and clashing cymbals introduced the annual band concert. One Enchanted Evening the Soiree came, April 27, amid swirling gowns, scented flowers, and white dinner jackets-and went all too quickly. MAY A showing of the latest styles made and modeled by our own skilled home econo- mists, fulfilled every dream of the fashion- minded. May 'llth featured twin events. The Awards Assembly made many col- lege dreams realities. In the second, the May Queen Coronation, the attendants marched solemnly to the throne to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance , then the breathtaking moment-our Queen was revealed. Senior Day on the 'I8th cli- maxed long weeks of dress-hunting and allotted the reigning class a whole day to to claim full supremacy and parade their 97 talents. When Brown and Whites were distributed on the 23rd, all pens ran dry and writer's cramp took its toll. Without time to recover, we tangled once more with those dreaded finals. Baccalaureate, May 27, created mixed feelings for the Seniors -expectancy and nostalgia. Then on May 28, 1956, long lines of white-robed seniors became historical figures of G. It has been said that music is the universal language of our times. Certainly we, of Greens- burg High, were proud of the language spoken by our fine music department this year. Our band spoke of victory, giving encour- agement to our team and enthusiasm to the crowd. ln the spring concert, a militant yet sub- lime language was spoken by the band. During the winter months, the band, under the capable direction of Mr. Glenn Davis, prepared this per- formance of their vernacular. Entertainment was the speech spoken by the orchestra. Long hours of preparation enabled mem- bers of our music organizations to represent us at county, district, and state group gatherings. Hood T955 seemed to be a year of upheaval for all Greensburg High School publications. While the Greensburger was having its headaches, many of you may not have been aware that the Brown and White was having some difficulty getting started, too. Upon the retirement of our able sponsor, Miss Hudson, last year, the staff was left with a few good ideas and some gen- eral know-how, but no sponsor. The search began. A few weeks after school opened, Mr. Jacobs came to us and informed us that he had found our man. So we began, a little late, but with many plans and a co-operative, interested sponsor, Mr. Hood. By the end of September, work was in full swing. The Senior write-ups, the longest and most difficult part of production were being written. ln Decem- ber, members of the staff were assigned to covering the various stories of our yearbook such as Dear Diary and the sports write-ups. Pictures were named, and informal headings written for sports and club pages. On March 15th, we breathed a sigh of relief as we sent the last part of the Brown and White off to press, holding a little of that breath to see if you would like it. We hope you do! This year the students enioyed being part of Old Fashioned Days and dressing to fit the part, the boys with sideburns and moustaches and the girls in long, full skirts and gayly colored bonnets. Also, this year the Distributive Education students, with their sponsor, Donald Shwing, went to the State Conven- tion, attended by D. E. students from all over Pennsylvania. The convention was held on April 9 in Lancaster. Their activi- ties there included tours ot the local plants and stores, and a dinner-dance in the even- ing. Meet the Press The Eyes And Ears Of The School Last September we anxiously awaited our school newspaper, The Greensburger. Weeks passed and still no issue appeared. Early in November the president of the Stu- dent Government Association announced to the student body that we had no Greensburger because the paper was not being supported by enough students. Un- der the able guidance of Miss Rugh, the sponsor of the paper, the Student Govern- ment Association representatives pitched in and canvassed each home room to sell subscriptions. Most of the student body bought a subscription, and the presses began to roll. The first issue appeared on Friday, No- vember 23, 1955. lt was met with many happy exclamations from the students. Although The Greensburger was smaller in size, it was filled to brimming with many articles of interest to everyone. The variety cf students interviewed in the Students of the Week was especially liked. They rep- resented every phase of school life, both athletically and academically. The editors, Leora Mae Furlong and Patti Hrebik, and reporters of The Greensburger have given us a newspaper of which G.H.S. can be proud. L. provides the incentive for high school students to become more effective speakers. This goal is accomplished through competition, recognition in the lo- cal, district, and national areas, service talk to public organizations, and fellowship with many students from competing schools. Those members who were entered in the district competitive speech semi-finals were: Marsha Morgan and Frances Keenan in girls' ex tempore, Frank Hamm and Wayne Hayden in boys' ex temporeg Mar- ilyn Radbord and Rozanne Friedlander in oratcrical declamation, Lyn Wyant and Elaine Davis in original, Shirley Berry in humorous, and Donna Stevenson in dra- matic. The varsity debate team, composed of Sallyanne Lawrence, Marsha Morgan, Frank Hamm, and Wayne Hayden, partici- pated in an active debate season and were entered in the district debate semi-finals. Frank Hamm and Wayne Hayden, our student congress national nominees, com- peted forthe honor of representing our dis- trict in Oklahoma in June, 1956. The Western Pennsylvania District was ably led this year by our coach, Miss Bru- nelli, who served as the District Chairman. N. F. I.. Spokes Of The Speaking Wheel Fourth Row: S. In addition to learning proper stage presence, voice control, and stage action, each actor was made aware of properties, sound eftects, staging, and lighting by Mrs. Corrine Smith, the club sponsor and dramatic coach. Success arrived early for the Masque Club as Lo and Behold , the Senior class play, was presented November 18th. Immediately following this three-act play, rehearsals were begun for a comedy, In Them Thar Hills , and a drama, The Storm . The process of learning to use the stage for the club productions required determi- nation, patience, and hard work. But with all the hard work, there were enjoyable moments, and after each show, the time which had been spent in rehearsals seemed to have been worthwhile. With the final game against Jean- nette, November ll, l955, the curtain fell on a highly successful football season for the Golden Lions of Greensburgh High. In his first season as head football coach, Rob- ert Williams won the respect of G.H.S. football enthusiasts and members of the op- position alike. Rain dominated the first half of the '55 schedule, but it failed to dampen the spirits of traditionally loyal Greensburg fans. With the student body behind them, the Gridiron Lions displayed their power, speed, and deception enroute to a 6-3-1 season. The team says farewell to seventeen boys who saw action for the last time this season. Supplying the necessary power were the ends Tuskan, J. Panichella, Hor- nock, and Baughman. Stopping the gap at tackle were Schuck, Rause, and Collins. The responsibility of holding the opposition fell on guards White, Lozaw, D. Skatell and McDonough. Carlson was the middleman at center. The speed and deception was very ably handled by the boys in the back- field. The end runs by the speedy Goulding and Urban, and the drive of Wolff were the factors in the six victories. Additional drive and speed were displayed by Faris, Betlan, and D. Panichella. The returning lettermen for next year possess a variety of talents. To fill the va- cancies in the line are the familiar names cf Padula and Krunszyinsky. Seacrist, Six, Teamwork Stops Monessen and Camerote are another trio of linemen who will see action. Savini, this year's quarterback, along with Raneri, Cirelli, and F. Skatell replace the graduating mem- bers in the backfield. ln the background at each game, the boys in the white uniforms, the managers, kept the equipment intact and in order. In their last year as managers are Muir, Weaver, and Steele. 1955 was a successful season for the Lions. But the success must be measured far beyond games won. The success of this year's team stems from the spirit of each competitor, and the combination of that spirit made this a winning year for Greensburg High School. The Greatest Game Of The Winter The cage Lions, diminutive in size this year, became entangled in an unfamiliar web-the web of a losing season. A glance at the overall record of tive wins and thir- teen losses indicates a disappointing year. In the course of events, coach Harold Smith tried every possible combination with the hope ot finding a starting team that would click together. But just as the bubble of success seemed near, a flashy five from an- Up, Over, And In other town would mar the soap sphere. The greater number of setbacks came in exhibition contests. As the season pro- gressed, the Lions seemed to gain a slight momentum, splitting ten games in section play to place fourth. And in the backcourt, Carmen Moffa acted as play- maker and possessed a deadly setshot. De- fensive duties fell on the shoulders of Bob Goulding, who handled them with a master touch. Another duo, Lanny Muir and Bob Var- go, saw their last action in Lion Suits. An inspired group of underclassmen rounded out the roster. The fiery play of Sam Raneri, agility of John Lynch and ac- curacy of Bob Hawk indicate a brighter fu- ture for next year. A pleasant surprise for Coach Smith was the ability of Sophomore Barry Riley, whose display of talent will overflow for another two years. Bob Me- lago and Don Savini were valuable as re- serve strength. After successful performances in the past, this year seemed to be a quiet one. Yet, in a sense, it was a year of rebuilding. It was a year of trials-a year of experi- ment. Coach Smith, students and loyal sup- porters all look forward to the day when the Lions will again be a threat to the am- bitious opposition. The schedule was tackled as only a hungry lion springs to a feast. Wilkins- burg, the appetizer, was downed 'I4Vz - ilk. Our golfers greeted the next four teams in a more graven manner, coming through the matches with a partly filled stomach by de- feating Jeannette, 15-l, Latrobe, 'I3-3, Con- nellsville, T4-2, and North Huntingdon, l5Vz-Uh. Then the second course was served and was likewise munched down. The sec- f '+ f - GOLF f R 5-.....v' ond course: Jeannette, 'I2V2-3lf2, Latrobe, ll-5, Connellsville, T6-0, a special treat, and North Huntingdon, 15-T. For dessert Jamison and DelVicchio represented their team at the final course but sampled de- feat as Moon Township came out trium- phant 'IO to 6. After ten years of working with G.H.S. golf teams, Coach Moser retired from his post after guiding various teams to six section titles. GOLF TEAM '54-'55 Second Row: Silk, J.
