The statt pry into the secret desires ot the student body: they analyze the pro- gram and motives ot clubs: they review contests and activities, scholastic and athletic. All this is done with only one aim: They hope to accomplish this taslc sincerly and well, tor they tully realize the permanency ot the record which they will place side by side with those ot tormer years. A highly efficient and active legislative body is necessary for running affairs as complex as those involving an educational program. NVe are fortunate to have on the Board of lfducation seven men whose skillful work keeps Greensburg High School running on well-oiled wheels of efficiency. Because of the vital part they play in the operation of the school, we think you should know these men. They are: Messrs. VVilliam G. Burhenn, Abner E. Henry, Paul VV. Marsh, A. B. McClintock, Fred M. Mclntyre, Kirk S. Nevin, and Vllilliam U. Peterson. 'lio select the back- bone of the school, its teachers, is one of the siguihcant tasks of this groupg of no less importance to students is the job of proclaiming the holidays. In levying taxes and appropriating money for current expenses the Board attempts to budget the revenue available for educational purposes in such a way as to obtain the best possible results. Theirs is the Herculean task of providing students with up-to-date classbooks, sufficient paper, and other necessary facilities. This council of seven is the determining factor in the settlement of disputes pertaining to the educational system of Greensburg. 'lihis year that hudget was arranged so that a freshly painted school would greet us as we returned to classes in Septemher. 'l'he things to which we give little thought, such as health and attendance, are hlr. liuliclfs yearly concern. lfven our grades, which we often so cheerfully ignore, are of vital interest to him. Perhaps we can never fully appreciate the great responsibility Mr. Bulick each year faces, hut we can appreciate his friendly greetings and his kind and sincere interest in all of us. Our curriculum offers the voca- tional department which educates boys for various trades, all very useful in future life. One is likely to find almost anything in the basement,-homemacle radios, dis- mantled cars, just anything. ln 303 our creators of fashion and design are diligently working. On the same floor, Nr. Beamer teaches students to draw straight lines the correct way. Our future secretaries learn shorthand and typing under the eagle eye of the Misses Keener, Null, and Sloan. Girls who are optimistic in landing their mann take up cooking and sewing in the Home Ee Department. The after-dinner speakers of the future learn how to bore people without being nervous, under the guidance of Mr. Bodycombe. Probably the event of greatest importance this year was the school survey, conducted in April. Every measuring stick was utilized to determine where we stand in the eyes of other school men. 'llheir purpose, since the founding of the club in l'122. has been to build fine character and enrich the lives of teen-age boys. Under the earnest and able leadership of llarvcy Beckley and Xlr. Vvaltet Smith, their sponsor, Delphi had a most enjoyable season 'lihey had several dances and their 'fall star basketball game, a hi-light of the season. These activities swelled their treasury to an unprecedented peak and left fond memories for those graduating. BIOS LOGOS Guided by the stimulating ideas of Nlrs. Church, the members of Bios Logos undertook a variety of projects suited to their many inter- ests. Fvery other Monday and often at 3 : 12, committees toiled at their special tasks. Some made charts depicting the dispersal of seedsg others grew cactig some even cultivated peanuts. lfach member actively shared in the success of the club by participating in a series of informal talks presented at each meeting. Mean- while Mr. Young created the dummy, the skeleton of the year book. VVhen school opened in Qeptember the staff met eyery day sixth period with only one objective in mind-to present to the students of Greensburg High 'School a book representing the school year 1943-1946. To compose the senior write-ups we needed to learn all the important data about each graduate. Consequently every senior received 'i questionnaire from which we gleaned informa- tion for completing this significant task. 'lio furnish the art work in any yearbook is 'i stupendous job, but we were fortunate to have the services of a talented senior Mary Lou Klingensmith, whose drawings, amusing and ingenious, enliven this Annual. Realizing pictures constitute a major part of a yearbook, we strove to obtain a representative group of photographs. .lane Highberger made OUR WORK picture schedules, canceled them, and then revised them until finally Mr Landis with his iny aluable camera, snapped the shots we present for your pleasure Because we did not raise the price of the book this year budgeting was difficult. Qubscriptions and advertisements must net a sufficient sum for the business staff to negotiate for the printing engraving, and covers. After juggling figures, we laid aside our financial worries. By Christmas the literary staff finished the senior write-ups the advertising staff concluded its campaign, and the business staff balanced the books. Now we came to a task which required all the journalistic skill we could muster-composing club write-ups sport reviews, and the story of our school. looking ahead to the deadline, March Hrst, we endeavored to do our utmost to satisfy our readers the students of Greensburg, High School. Vllith the effective running came a very enjoyable social calendar. Both October 26 and 27 were spent in the discussion of the advantages of a student council, types of activities, and modes of financing. David ilihomas, the president of our organization, presided over the sessions. 'lihe convention was climaxed by our annual Hallowe'en Dance, with the gymnasium decorated in black and orange. For the music we turned to Dick l'lunter's orchestra. A magazine campaign was conducted to raise necessary funds for a war memorial organ in memory of the former high-school students who gave their lives in the service of their country. 'lihe Student Government can well be proud of this addition to the school. 'lihe Christmas dance, stag dances following basketball games. the lVlay Queen dance, -lack Merlin, and Dick llunter-all stand out as highlights on the calendar of the lovers of dancing. Aside from the ordinary assemblies, we enjoyed a variety of special paid assemblies, ranging from the Kingsland Marionettes to the Brandt Concert Party, and from Bertrand Shurtleff to Fred G. Bale who lectured on wrestling and good citizenship respectively. On 11 rainswept held, the Lions opened their 1945 football season by defeating the plucliy Railroaders from Youngwood, our perennial Hrst game rivals, 13 to U. Une of the highlights of the game was Don Klahoneyls brilliant end-around for our second score. One week later Sewickley Township surprised us by holding the Lions to a 7-7 tie. Caviggia, caught fire in the second half. Nlessich, jackson, Hogue, House, and Slyman fought hard after the Sewickley counter but were unable to score. ln the first tie game in a long series between the two rivals, the Hurst Hurricane and Greensburg Lions battled to a scoreless tie. Line play dominated the game. Only one offensive stab stood out. This came in the second quarter, when Bud Marshall intercepted a pass on the Hurst forty-five. With blocking he bulled his way to the visitors' five. Hurst stidened, and Greensburg lost the ball on downs. That was the only scoring threat of the game. The next week, following a complete shakeup, our team took the Held against favored Connellsville. jackson switched to right end, Slyman to center. Pro Danks was inserted at quarterback with Marshall going to right half. Good blocking from the line enabled the backheld to run wild. Abie House played a Ubrilliantw game, scoring two touchdowns and two points after touchdown. Pi Messich, smashing full- back, also played a fine game, scoring two touch- downs. Then came the Norwin game, which cost us a chance for future victories. We lost the services of House for the season. Ralph McCurdy also was injured but returned to play the next week. Despite these injuries in the first few minutes of play, the Lions drove to two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win I4 to 0. Messich and Hogue were offensive standouts. In the line, Jack Riddle, Dick Paluzzi, and jackson played good ball. With excitment at high pitch, for we were un- defeated in Class AA competition, we traveled to Altoona. There we suffered our first defeat. The heavier Altoona team, using straight football, plowed its way along the ground for two touchdowns. We found the Altoona line impregnable, so had to resort to the air for our lone tally. This pass play was the most spectacular of the day. Pro Danks, sophomore quarterback, faded from his own forty and heaved a long pass to Messich, who raced the remaining distance to score. Laurels for outstanding play in the line went to john Ammerman and joe Moyer. On a beautiful October day, the Lions met the Latrobe Steelers in a game which was to decide the XVestmoreland County AA championship. The game did nothing to clear the situation. The out- standing play of the day was a seventy-yard run by Nlessicb, fullback of the Lions, Tom Levendusky played a standout game in the line for G. H. S., while Felbaum played a fine game at guard and fullback for Latrobe. In a game marked by numerous substitutions, .lohnstown downed Greensburg 13 to O. VVe made a gallant goal-line stand at the end of the first half but were unable to cope with the passes of Steve ffliara, Johnstown signal caller: we yielded two touchdowns in the third quarter. Champions of Section VIH, we hopefully traveled to Nlclfeesport to face Donora, the de- fending state champs, in the state elimination. It was a terrific battle between two excellent teams. Greensburg held the lead the first three quarters, but the overpowering stamina of Donora won out in the last Eve minutes of play. ln the quarter-hnals of the county tourna- ment, Greensburg easily defeated Latrobe. The semi-final game against New Kensington was a red-hot battle, the l,ions finally winning in the second overtime period. ln the finals Greensburg went down to defeat at the hands of Norwin. Our grapplers proved their ability by assembling a skillful team, but they faced many disappointments with competing teams- also skillful. Greensburg completed its season with Five victories and seven losses. They met defeat with Boswell twice 49 to 6 and 9 to 851 and once with Jefferson C10 to 75, Vllashington C11 to 75, Canonsbnrg C14 to 35, and Blairsville C8 to 75. 'lihey topped Blairsville once, however, by the score of 10 to 7. The matters also showed themselves superior to Kiski twice C16 to 4 and 15 to 35, and West View twice C13 to 5 and 11 to 65. Once again they bowed to Vllaynesburg C13 to 65, the 19-15 and 1946 NV.l'.l.A.l,. championship team. liven though Coach Wviley lost hve first-squad boys from the previous year, he managed to procure eight lettermen by hard work and practice on the part of both the wrestlers and their leaders. Lettermen are: Williani Grim C955, Louis lVlasilli C103 5, john Senic 61125, John Pastor C1205, Alfred Vallano C133 5, Robert Hogue C1385, john Vrable 11545, and Robert Drake Cl655. The section tournament took place March 8 and 9 in the VVaynesburg College gymnasium. Of our eight lettermen who entered the tournament, four were disqualified in the quarter-finals: while four entered the semi-finals. Robert Hogue was defeated in an overtime period of the semi-finals, but Bill Grim, Louis Masilli, and -lohn Pastor lost only in the final bouts of the eliminations.
