Thirteen years have now gone by since that most frightening day in the fall of 1970. Angie Hobbs never could seem to stay in her own class. You see, there were two classes of us all in a very big building we have come to know as the POD. Man, how we did hate those mats and the afternoon sleep period! We graduated from there and became full fledged students in Greensboro Elementary. We had a big rock throwing contest in the first grade, but it all came to an abrupt halt when Melody McDaniel got hit. Boy! She was glad it stopped! We had our own little contender in the second grade. Vanessa Bailey gave at least five people a run for their money — trying to keep from going to the office. She was a little bundle of dynamite! Lisa Hindman broke her arm. Everyone pampered her — and do you know? She is spoiled to this very day! Tammy Simmons found her first true love in the third grade, and while Elouise Robinson was busy chasing the boys, Dianna Starling kept running away from them! In the fourth grade, Phillip Jackson and Herbert Woods took a break from the girls and had a big spit ball fight with Hank Shepard and Irvin Clark. I don't remember who won, but somebody snitched on them, and they all got sent to the office. Guess you know what happened then. The fifth grade proved to be very painful for Hank Shepard. Mr. Drayton broke three paddles on him! Nick Thomas discovered girls this year — namely Linda Peterson. The sixth grade was really something! Greensboro Elementary had a new ruler; US!! We really thought we were something! We were TOP DOGS! Vanessa Bailey and Shonnie Marshall found a friendship that is still lasting today. Our year of glory came to an end, and we went to the seventh grade at Greensboro High. We were the underlings again. Boy, we almost broke our necks trying to get to class on time. The girls discovered what a frustrating feeling it was when they became infatuated with the older class-men. In eighth grade, the boys discovered the world of sports! There was JV basketball, football, and — best of all — Girl watching! Hank Shepard and Herbert Woods became members of the FBI — Female Body Inspectors!! We finally earned ourselves a name in the ninth grade — FRESHMEN!! Some of us really were, but we almost lost it. We almost had massive heart attacks from fear of failing Coach Rowell's Algebra Class. Angie Hobbs presented him with a portrait of himself — which he pinned up on his wall for the remainder of the year. From the time Jennifer Clausen opened her mouth to introduce herself in the tenth grade, she hasn’t shut it since. Lisa Hindman and Vanessa Bailey became cheerleaders this year. Mark, Herbert, Amos, and Derrick picked up splinters on the football team — after all — somebody had to keep the benches warm. Jackie Dudley was our Miss Sophomore. We almost lost one of our teachers that year. Mr. Coggin hasn’t been quite the same since he had the honor of teaching us how to drive. That was quite an experience — some of us still haven’t learned! We really made history in the eleventh grade. The class had a hard time getting it together, but we gave the seniors a totally different prom. The first of its kind at Greensboro. Poor Shonnie — she had two dates for the evening — poor boys too! Our own Lisa was Miss Valentine that year and Tammy Simmons was Miss Junior. Two of our class members — no names mentioned — 84 found out that it’s O.K. for best friends to share most everything, but when it comes to boyfriends — well, you have to draw the line somewhere! TWELFTH GRADE! Top Dogs! The big time! We have really pulled some crazy stunts in our time, but piling 18 of us into Bill Jonker’s car, had to top them all. Timmy Bentley joined us this year, and Tammy Simmons threw him for a loop. Roger Lumpkin decided that food is where the heart is and spent most of his time in the cafeteria, while his buddies sang through theirs. Yes, it’s been a long haul, but it looks like we made it! PROPHECY 1993 . Coming through downtown Greensboro, on the Eastside freeway passing the Space Center and Launching Pad, we see that the class of ’83 has made its mark on North Florida. On the left there’s a motorcycle shop owned by Wild Bill Jonker, who supplies the F.H.I.P. (Florida Highway Patrol) with motorcycles. Enrolled in the F.H.I.P. program are the following officers: Wallace Bostick, Herbert Woods, Tim Madry, and the one woman, Jackie Dudley. On their beat, they’re continuously patrolling the Busy Bee 3, owned by Dexter Thigpen, where Charles Crews is the D.J., and next door to the Bee is Rex Holmes’ Hit and Run Liquor Store, where they are constantly arresting Michael Ford for drunkeness? On the right stands the majestic Grand Ole Opry owned by Angela Hobbs and Jennifer Clausen. The prime entertainers are Angela Murray and Linda Peterson with their excellent clarinet duo. On down the street, are Boss Hank Shepard’s Mayorial Towers, also occupied by his royal sidekicks: Sheriff Steve Safford, and Deputy Roger Lumpkin, who are always receiving complaints from the Municipal librarian, Melody McDaniel, about Cedric Walker’s Kool Town Junior Store, (primarily, for hanging out). Across from the Kool Town Junior Store, is Granger’s Halfway House for ex-convicts owned by Mark Granger. Right next door to the Halfway House is The Greensboro Trading Mall. Guess who supplies the mall with its animal furs? Timmy Bentley! And guess who shoots them? Timmy’s wife, Tammy Simmons Bentley! Behind the Trading Mall, is the Clark Denistry owned by the illustrious Derrick Clark. It is run in conjunction with the Veterinary Hospital owned by his brother, Irvin Clark, who opened it out of pity for all the animals who were run down by Bill Jonker’s main mechanic Larry Ford. And some of our more scholastic citizens are Elouise Robinson, sometimes called Miss Initiative, the editor of the Greensboro Tribune and the principal and vice-principal of the University of Greensboro (UG), are Phillip Jackson and Nicholas Thomas. Also at the University are Amos Pearson, starting quarterback, Stanley McMillian the starting tailback, and Van McCloud the starting quarter tackle. Already graduated from UG, are Dianna Starling and Vanessa Bailey. Dianna married a mechanic who suddenly acquired great wealth and now resides on a man-made hill overlooking Greensboro. Vanessa on the other hand opened the ABC Nursery, which takes care of Shonnie Marshall’s childrenfall 10 of them). Down in the Juniper Suburbs, is the famed Indian Springs, which is owned by Lisa Hindman and Betty McCay. Lisa converted the Old Dance Hall into Lisa and Betty’s Beauty Parlor. As we reluctantly leave this great town, we wonder what dramatic changes will occur in 10 more years ... 85 89 I, Cedric Walker, will to Alvin Ford, my willpower and my potential to be a good basketball player, I, Tammy Simmons, will to Shelia Bentley, Sherena Melendy, and Susan Martin, the ability to see the best of a situation. I, Elouise Robinson, will to Tony Britt, a calculator to keep a count of all the women in his life. I, Wallace Bostick, will to my sister and the remaining students, to live and do the best that they can. I, Lisa Hindman, will to Danny Anderson, the ability to remember the memories, because they were special. I, Jennifer Clausen, will to Shelia Bentley and Danny Anderson, the ability to watch their mouths. I, Angela Hobbs, will to Shelia Bentley, the ability to distinguish green from blue. I, Bill Jonker, will to Micheal Pitts, my ability to get away with anything. I, Melody McDaniel, will to Sherena Melendy, a new red pen so she can grade all of Mr. Coggin's test papers. I, Shonnie Marshall, will to Latrenda Gainous and the rest of my cousins, my figure and the ability to look over foolishness, but stand out in the world with dignity. 90 , Linda Peterson, will to the future clarinets, the ability to be as dedicated as was. I, Mark Granger, will to Van Granger, my brother, my abilities to run track and play football. I, Hank Shepard, will to Keith Mercer, some of my size so he will have something to back up his mouth. I, Stevie Safford, will to Matt, the ability to run the two mile run under twenty minutes. I, Dianne Starling, will to my younger brothers, Luke and Jon David, the ability to stay in school and make good grades. I, Charles Crews, will to my sister, Phyllis, the ability to succeed in life. I, Rex Holmes, will to all the girls at Greensboro High, to stop trying to be so sedity I, Angie Murray, will to my sister. Sophia and my cousin. Tonya, the ability to get an education like I have achieved. I, Timmy Madry, will to the Juniors, all the luck in the world against Government. I, Stanley McMillan, will to my sister, Lesley McMillan, a comb so she’ll stop asking for mine. I, Jackie Dudley, will to my sister and my cousin, that a man isn’t a man unless, he can show efforts out of life. Halley’s — the most famous comet in the solar system — is scheduled to swing around the sun again in 1986. Scientists expect it to be visible in the night sky for the first time since 1910. The comet, which in past excursions around the sun has developed a tail millions of miles long, was named for English astronomer Edmund Halley and has been recorded in some historical records as far back as 87 B.C. 121 rs ■ f
