HISTORY OF CLASS OF 1956 In the year 1944, when we started our long journey down the road of twelve long years of trying for a diploma, we were met at the first grade door by Mrs. Martha Green. All of us were very excited over the idea of being in school but our joy was soon toned down by the whippings we received for disobeying Mrs. Green. Of the twenty-one students graduating this year only eight started off in the first grade at Greensboro. These were Carroll Brinson, Carol Clark, Charles Clark, Ann Fletcher, Sarah France Potter, Edward Rowan, Charles Shepard, and Yvonne Shepard. Mrs. Kathleen Rowan was waiting as our smiling faces marched through the Second Grade Door. Mrs. Rowan was always promising us a dollar is we could find a word without a consonant or a vowel; of course nobody ever won the dollar. We were entertained in the Third Grade by Miss Howard, who later on in the year changed her name to Mrs. Marco Shepard. This was the year we learned real writing. Walter Sharptonand Glenn Suber joined our happy group that year. In the Fourth Grade, Mrs. Harry Anderson held the ruler over our heads. This was a tough year because we were supposed to learn our multiplication tables. Mary Jean Butler and Harold Shepard joined us that year. We really had fun in the fifth grade trying out so many new teachers. That year we had about five different teachers. Mrs. Martha Mae McPherson started us off and Mrs. Thelma Crosby promoted us on to the sixth grade. While we were in the fifth grade Jimmy Clark, Harry Kennedy, and Phillip Blount joined us. We were confronted with the Principal's wife, Mrs. Jack Hyatt, in the sixth grade. Retha Alday came in to join our happy group that year. All of us were looking forward to the seventh grade taught by Mrs. Carl Smith. We felt that we were getting up to be real big because we were taking physical education with the high school students. Yvonne Whittle and Odessa Richards were added to our list that year. In the eighth grade, we started changing classes. This was somewhat confusing but with a homeroom teacher like Mr. Peer, we were soon taught how to change classes quietly. Mr. Jeff Bradford was waiting on us our Freshman Year. This was another year we learned to be quiet. That year the boys and girls divided so they could put on a decent chapel program. The girls came through theirs with only one mishap; the boys set the alarm clock to go off at the wrong time. Sandie Smith joined us that year. Miss Sue Young was our homeroom teacher in our Sophomore year. We were sort of rough and ruly but Mr. Richardson soon toned us down. Ruby McAlpin and Doris Miller became Sophomores that year. Mrs. Harris Francis was the victim of our Junior year. He fell under the hardship of being with us while we were selecting our class rings and Junior play. This was the year we entertained the Seniors at the beach for a day. So we finally reached the year when we could be called diginified Seniors. It was a year filled with pleasure and disappointments. When we found that the traditional Senior Skip Day and week end beach trip had been cancelled, we planned another trip. For our Senior Play we presented ''Good Gracious Grandma, (a professional play staged by amateurs) which turned out to be a howling success. The F T A. Club was organized during our senior year. It was spark-plugged by four senior members, Carol Clark, Doris Miller, Sarah Potter and Yvonne Shepard. We, and our sponsor, Mr. Mods, are looking forward to the day when we receive our diplomas. After twelve long years of hard labor, we want to, thank our teachers and our parents who have kept us in school. u
