The first grade room was the starting point. The room held thirty smiling and shining faces, eager to start on the trip which would last for twelve years. Mrs. Floyd Green was our teacher that year. Burma Smith and Emmett Clark seemed to think that school was only a place for talk. They certainly did more than their share of talking that year. Joyce Suber and Virgie Ola Eubanks still bear the scars of the fight they had in the first grade. In the second grade we were met by Miss Kathleen Strange. We thought we were “big shots” in the second grade. We could read, count, and even write our names. Miss Sarah Howard was our teacher in the third grade. She had quite a time that year keeping Welburn Rowan from crying. It seemed as if everytime anyone looked around, great big tears were rolling down Welburn’s cheeks. The fourth grade will be well remembered by all. We really had to ”toe the line” that year. Mrs. Harrison was our teacher. Welburn will always remember how to pronounce Geography, Every syllable was beaten into him. We were guinea pigs for Mrs. McPherson’s first year of teaching at G.H.S. We were joined that year by Franklin Rowan and Elton White, from Sycamore, and Herbert Holland, from Dade City. The very first day that Franklin came to school at G.H.S., Burma and Emmett initiated him. They tried to see who could give him a black eye first. Later that year Wright Crosby, wearing his short brown pants, made his appearance. We were met in the sixth grade by Mrs. Tommy Green. The only thing we can remember about the sixth grade is that we played runaway and hide-and-go-seek every day. We had fun reading all the library books in the elementary library. We entered the seventh grade with Mrs. Carl Smith as our teacher. Virginia McGee rejoined our class that year. Believe it or not we felt more grown up at that time than we do now as Seniors. That year we had our first party at Lake Mystic. One of the many things we learned that year was that “Cabbage Head” is not a suitable nickname. We caught Winton Clark, Ellis Hill, Dan Garner, Pete Perkins, Maggie Potter, Norma Bowen, Martha Blount, and Wayne Spooner in the eighth grade. Mrs. Herschel Clark and Mr. N. B. Bevis were our home room teachers. Everybody was afraid the first day that they would not know which classroom to go to each period, as this was our first year of changing classes. We had thirty-eight students that year. 14 Mrs. Fowler was waiting for us in the ninth grade. Most of the home room periods each day was spent with the boys arguing with Mrs. Fowler. Again in the tenth grade we really had to toe the line”. Mr. T. R. Milam was our home room teacher. We really had lots of fun that year along with our studies. Gainey Shores, from Quincy, and Earline Shiver, from Faceville, Georgia, joined our happy class that year. Mr. Maurice J. Davis was our sponsor in our Junior year. Parties seemed to be quite popular that year. Practically every two weeks we were planning a party. Some of them didn’t turn out so well, especially the chicken pileau. It turned out to be a mixture of raw rice, stringy chicken, wood chips, pickles, soap, and a can of black pepper. Our theme song was “Feudin’, Fussin’, and Fightin'.” We presented You’ll Die Laughing as our Junior Play. It went over with a bang. We entertained the Seniors with a beach party at Long Beach. The noisiest, most confusing, and most exciting day of that year was the day we received our class rings. Sarah Fenn from Bristol, Florida, joined our class in the eleventh grade. The thing that Sarah remembers most about her first day at G. H. S. was the band of noisy boys, with Herbert Holland as their leader. At last in September of 1950 we reached the last pare of our trip with only these original members: Burma Smith, Emmett Clark, Welburn Rowan, Virgie Ola Eubanks, and Joyce Suber. Betty Jo Crosby, from Starke, Florida, and Faye Evans from Cairo, Georgia, joined our class. We have the largest class in many years. Mr. E. Forrest May was our sponsor. Our Senior Play, Brides to Burn, was a big hit with everyone. We will always remember the splendid group of teachers and the co-operation that they gave us throughout our school years. We will remember the things that we did at G. H. S. for many years to come. 15 Senior Class Prophecy On May Z9, 1951, after the Seniors had received their goatskins, they decided to go to see Madam Geetreechqueek, now located near the Georgia line, to look into the future and to see what they would be doing in 1961. As usual they couldn’t agree on anything. This time they could not decide whether to go in Burma’s fast Ford coupe or Herbert's dilapidated Mercury. After much argument, however, they finally decided to go in Burma’s fast Ford. As they neared the Georgia line, Betty Crosby, who was always on the alert, spied two soldiers hitch hiking. Imagine the surprise of the Seniors when they saw that the two were Grainey Shores and Pete Perkins who had left school the preceding January to join the Air Force. Having arrived, they found Madam Geetreechqueek to be the 13th daughter of a 13th daughter, of a 13th generation, and born on Friday 13, 1913, but the Seniors were not superstitious. As Madam Geetreechqueek looked into the crystal ball and into 1961, she saw Emmett Clark, Elton White, and Wright Crosby talking about agriculture. Emmett, a retired paratrooper, is the owner of the largest cattle ranch in the big community of Greensboro. He retired from being a paratrooper because he didn't want to lose his life before he met the one and only. Elton is a successful forestry man, employed by the State Board of Agriculture. Wright is teaching Agriculture at Two Egg. He is still trying to get Joyce to settle down and marry him. As Madam peered further into the crystal ball, she found Herbert Holland speeding down the road to lunch. As usual, the only thing he is interested in is food. He is still single. To tell the truth, he hasn't found anyone willing to cook as much as he can eat. After serving five years in the U. S. Navy, he has become a successful businessman. His pride and joy are what was formerly Brown’s Cafe. Now in a cloudy crystal she saw Gainey Shores, the most important professor at Columbia University, diasgreeing with Martha Blount on the subject of religion. Martha is now the wife of a Baptist preacher, so it is easy to see what her view is. She is having quite a time getting her three children to behave as she thinks a preacher’s children should behave. Madam Geetreechqueek then saw three suspicious-looking-charac -ters sneaking around the corner of a building. After a second look she discovered them to be the three great defectives - er - I mean detectives, Dan of the Death Squad Garner, Sherlock Franklin Rowan, and Pete Perkins, counter spy. These three joined the FBI soon after Uncle Sam let them out of the Army. Pete’s third love is piloting. Of course, Hilda and the FBI are the first two. 16 Sarah Fenn and Earline Shiver have become nurses. They served three years in the WAVES along with Joyce Suber, Virgie Ola Eubanks, Virginia McGee, and Martha Blount. Later on, Joyce, Virginia, and Martha decided to become secretaries, Joyce is employed by the Suber Super Market, but it doesn’t look as if she will be there very much longer. She has that certain gleam in her eyes--better watch out Wright. Virginia is working with the Sawdust Tobacco Co., as secretary and bookkeeper. Betty Crosby has also become a secretary. She is employed at Nuts and Bolts Inc., but her main job is keeping up with Dan. Charlotte White is the bookkeeper of the growing Cut Mag Corp. Maggie Potter is a private secretary to the richest man in Docville. Madam Geetfeechqueek suddenly gasped, and the Seniors all crowded around the crystal ball to see what had caused her excitement. They all saw Burma Smith riding around in a brand new Cadillac. He is an officer in the Navy, having just returned from a four-year visit to the Hawaiian Islands. He can tell many interesting things about his visit, mainly about the Hulu Hulu girls. Norma’s husband is also in the Navy. They are the proud parents of two children. Sarah Fenn's dream is to come true. She is to visit Nashville, Tennessee, and hear the hillbilly singing. Earnest Tubb is to teach her to sing “I’m Walking the Floor Over you”. It is rumored that she is engaged to a hillbilly. Welburn Rowan attended the University of Notre Dame where he was the star football player. Ellis Hill is the owner of the largest chain store in Florida. Wayne Spooner is now the world’s greatest fisherman. He achieved this title with a fish that he caught in Shepard’s millpond last year. W inton Clark has bought out Splendid Lunch. Faye Evans is still busy traveling back and forth from Cairo to Greensboro. Her ambition is to become a nurse. On the way home the Seniors had four flat tires, forty-six Coca Colas, and a blown gasket. They were finally arrested for failure to go on a green light. Burma's fast Ford coupe had stalled. Herbert had to go get his Mercury. 17 MABLE HOSEY CAROL JEAN CLARK G. H. S. PATRICIA BENTLY 19 MARCUS EDWARDS Juniors VIRGINIA WATSON MARY LEE CROSS G. H. S. Juniors SARAH FLETCHER WILLARD RUDD G. H.
