DIAC CHAMPIONS (L to R seating) Bill Chaisson, Manager; Jeff Patton; Jimmy Howard; Shannon Pulliam; Ty Stout; Vince Brown; Shannon Tuttle; Calvin Hunt; Marcus Keith; Sue Ireton, Trainer (L to R standing) Ron Mikels, Head Coach; Earl Craig, Asst. Coach; Skip Taylor, Asst. Coach; Ricky Love; Gerald McKinney; Scott Browning; Steve Bowser; Gene Corbett; Caprice Kitchen, Kim Rinko, Cheryl Stamper, Statisticians The 1984- 1985 basketball season is a season to remember indeed. Ron Mikel ' s Hornets produced a 1 5 consecutive game winning streak resulting in their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament. It was also the third longest winning streak in the nation and the first amoung Divi- sion III schools. After a nebulous beginning including a 62-59 overtime loss at home to North Carolina Wesleyan, the Hornets were facing a 5-6 overall record. Resting 1-2 in conference play, the Hornets looked like anyting but contenders for the DIAC championship. The shaky start may have defeated many teams, but the determined Hornets refused to bow out of the conference race. This talented, hard-working team com- bined well-executed, aggressive play with cool confidence to give Greensboro College supporters something to get excited about. The Hornets never lost again in the regular season and won the regular season conference title outright with a 12-2 record following a 65-63 defeat of neigh- bor rival UNC-Greensboro. Greensboro won the first two rounds of the DIAC tour- nament starting with a 78-77 win over Averett and then beating Christopher Newport 68-65 to advance to the finals. In an emotional four overtime game, said by many to be the greatest game in conference history, Greensboro College defeated St. Andrews 85-81 to secure the South Regional berth in the NCAA national tournament. The Hornets were derailed by Centre College of Ken- tucky 66-52 in the first round of the NCAA South Regionals hosted by Greensboro. The Greensboro Hor- nets came back the next night to drop fifth ranked Augsburg of Minnesota 83-69 to finish the 1984-1985 season with 21 wins, the most victories in the school ' s history. Steve Bowser and Marcus Keith were named First Team All Conference, and Calvin Hunt was named to the Second Team. Shannon Pulliam was voted the MVP of the DIAC Tournament. Coach Ron Mikels received DIAC Coach of the Year. tri

National Awards a Make it BIG at our smal l college STEPHANIE PAUSELL (Lexington, KY) Stephanie received one of ten national internships funded by the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Because of the guidance of a challenging faculty and the support of the GC community, I feel well-equipped to continue participating in the process of learning and the struggle for a just world. ELAINE PENN (Madison, NC) Elaine was awarded the prestigious Olympia Award by the Southland Cor- poration. The award is presented to amateur athletes who excel in academics and athletics. Because Greensboro College is little in size, the stu- dent is able to receive a tremendous amount of individual instruction and guidance; thus, the student is assured an opportunity for achievement. Not only does Greensboro College portray a caring atmosphere from its faculty, staff, and student body, but is also pro- vides a substantial amount of activities for partici- pation. ROBERT STANLEY (Raleigh, NC) Robert was elec- ted one of two Student Directors of the National Educa- tion Association. Don ' t let the price tag fool you at GC. The Financial Aid Office will help you in everyway. You also have to look at the personal attention that you ' re getting at GC and realize that its worth the extra money. You cannot find a more caring faculty and staff to work with for four years.
