Spikers Post Third Consecutive Twenty Win Season The Greensboro College Volleyball Team was impressive again in 1984, winning twenty-three of thirty-five matches. Coach Jean Lojko ' s team was good enough to be ranked third in the South Region by the NCAA Division III. The Hornets finished third in the Dixie Conference race, behind UNC-G and St. Andrews. There were many highlights to the volleyball team ' s season. The team participated in the prestigious Juniata College Invitational and played the number one team in the nation (Juniata) in October. Elaine Penn, a senior from Madison, N.C., had an outstanding 1984 campaign. The 5 ' 3 setter was selected as the Dixie Conference Player of the Week twice. In addition, she was one of only six players to be named to the All- Tournament Team at the Juniata Tournament. Over 1 50 players participated in that tournament. Penn was also named All-Conference (First Team) and All-Tournament. Wendy Shope (Sanford, N.C.) was selected to the first team All-Conference squad for the second consecutive year. For the third consecutive year, Lisa Prillaman (Bassett, Va.), was named to the second team All- Conference squad. Lot ' s Of Firsts For Women ' s Basketball The GC Women ' s Basketball Team had their first winning season in the school ' s history with a 1 4- 1 overall record and a third place finish in the DIAC. The Hornets also defeated cross-town rival UNC-G 76-69 for the first time. The UNC-G win was tremendous for the Hornets because it exemplified where the program has come from and where it is headed. Several Hornet players recieved individual honors: Elaine Penn was voted Second Team All Conference, DIAC All Tournament, DIAC Player of the Week, and AWSF All American; Lorraine Orr received Second Team All Conference; DIAC Freshman of the Week (three times), and AWSF All American; and Donna Christy and Pam Benton received Hon- orable Mention All Conference. Coach Jean Lojko also receive DIAC Coach of the Year honors.

•£ W SOCCER Coach Jack Poland ' s soccer team ended their season with three consecutive wins. The Hornets defeated St. Andrews, Wingate and Piedmont Bible College to finish 5- 1 1 over and 1 -6 in the Dixie. The team showed vast improvement over its 0-9 campaign a year ago. The young Hornet team, starting ten freshmen, was competitive in every game they played, except two. Greensboro College played nationally-ranked N.C. Wesleyan and regionally-ranked Averett to 3-0 games. For many teams a 5-1 1 mark would beamajor disappointment; however, for the second year head coach, Poland, it was a major accomplishment. Without a doubt, the Hornet soccer program, is well on its way to reestablishing itself in the tough Dixie Conference. The Hornet ' s hard work was rewarded as several players received individual honors. Mike Thorn, a sweeperback from Syracuse, N. Y., was selected as Freshman of the Week in the Dixie Conference twice during the season. Tony Bowan, a freshman forward from Oxford, N.C, was also picked as Freshman of the Week. The Dixie Conference coaches picked Thorn and freshman Saulo Martinez from Deerfield Beach, Fla. to it ' s Honorable Mention All Conference Team. Thorn and Martinez were also selected to the All South Regional Team. Golf The GC Golf team finished the season in second place in the conference and placing 15th in the National Tournament. The Hornets had several top finishes, including 6th at the James Madison Invitational. 7th at the Maxward Elon Invitational and 5th at the District III Invitational. Two players received All-Conference Honors, Ricky Carter and Donnie Vanderbeck. The other members of the team were Bruce Stone, John Zurick, Kenny Smythe and Eric MacCluen.

Ron Mikel ' s Hornets produced a 1 5 consecutive game winning streak resulting in their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament. It was also the third longest winning streak in the nation and the first amoung Divi- sion III schools. After a nebulous beginning including a 62-59 overtime loss at home to North Carolina Wesleyan, the Hornets were facing a 5-6 overall record. Resting 1-2 in conference play, the Hornets looked like anyting but contenders for the DIAC championship. The shaky start may have defeated many teams, but the determined Hornets refused to bow out of the conference race. This talented, hard-working team com- bined well-executed, aggressive play with cool confidence to give Greensboro College supporters something to get excited about. The Hornets never lost again in the regular season and won the regular season conference title outright with a 12-2 record following a 65-63 defeat of neigh- bor rival UNC-Greensboro. Greensboro won the first two rounds of the DIAC tour- nament starting with a 78-77 win over Averett and then beating Christopher Newport 68-65 to advance to the finals. In an emotional four overtime game, said by many to be the greatest game in conference history, Greensboro College defeated St. Andrews 85-81 to secure the South Regional berth in the NCAA national tournament. The Hornets were derailed by Centre College of Ken- tucky 66-52 in the first round of the NCAA South Regionals hosted by Greensboro. The Greensboro Hor- nets came back the next night to drop fifth ranked Augsburg of Minnesota 83-69 to finish the 1984-1985 season with 21 wins, the most victories in the school ' s history. Steve Bowser and Marcus Keith were named First Team All Conference, and Calvin Hunt was named to the Second Team. Shannon Pulliam was voted the MVP of the DIAC Tournament. Coach Ron Mikels received DIAC Coach of the Year. tri
