i mi 1 B S G |p H fct M ' • Greensboro College was originally chorl ' ered in 1838 as Greensboro Female College, building upon a school for girls founded in 1833 by the Reverend Peter Doub, pastor of what is now known as West Market United Methodist Church of Greensboro. The institution prospered until 1863 when a fire and the misfortunes of war closed the college for ten years, although its work continued elsewhere by its president and faculty. it was marked by steady expansion of its physical plant in the following years. In the centennial year of its founding, the college merged with Davenport College to become Greensboro College, Incorporated. In 1922, Odell Memorial Auditorium was constructed. The growth continued with the construction of the Student Hospital in 1938-39, the James A. Jones Library, and the Arts and Sciences Building. These additions were followed by the Hannah Brown Finch Chapel in 1954 and the Greensboro Dormitor and Dining Hall in 1956. In 1954, the college took a new direction and went co-educationai. Many adjustments were mode in the student activities and the instructional program. The Men ' s Residence was completed in 1961, and the Student Cent was built in 1963.
