The institution prospered until 1863 when a fire and the misfortunes of war closed the college for ten years, although its work continued elsewhere by its president and faculty. it was marked by steady expansion of its physical plant in the following years. In the centennial year of its founding, the college merged with Davenport College to become Greensboro College, Incorporated. In 1922, Odell Memorial Auditorium was constructed. The growth continued with the construction of the Student Hospital in 1938-39, the James A. Jones Library, and the Arts and Sciences Building. These additions were followed by the Hannah Brown Finch Chapel in 1954 and the Greensboro Dormitor and Dining Hall in 1956. In 1954, the college took a new direction and went co-educationai. Many adjustments were mode in the student activities and the instructional program. The Men ' s Residence was completed in 1961, and the Student Cent was built in 1963. In 1967, the Cowan Humanities Building was opened and New Women ' s Residence Hall was completed in 1 After 136 years, Greensboro College is gro and expanding; its hopes to further serve its students with excellent faculty, administrotioL and facilities for the student body. John lived his life to the fullest, whether in athletics or just being a friend to someone in need. Those of us who knew him, and knew of his love for others could always look to him for friendship and understanding. Through the memories of his life, we will always remember John Havill — for what he was and what he is today in our hearts. 53 iSp ff Mary Beth Baker As an elementary education major, she found herself kept busy by all her extra-curricular activities.
