William Blake To the Ways He Lends The first year. Nothing here was all to real Except the grasses, wind and trees — Never loathe to love a breeze, Yet words I couldn ' t feel. Afraid to answer to myself I looked to silver skies. And felt the watch of someone wise In subtle, smiling guise. He looked at me and I could touch The wisdom of his mind No trouble finding where I ' m headed now- he knows me. And with time. He picked my spirit up to sing And held it in the sky — He launched me like a bird, and fly I did with golden wing. Suddenly the earth was spread below Just as a sleeping legend ' s town — But knowing then it wasn ' t so And afraid to touch the ground, I flew with song and confidence In circles ' round and ' round. Until he caught me falling And he brought me gently dovvm. An eagle perched upon my shoulder Then, to guide and point the way. My younger eyes looked to the day Of promise, and grew older. The old order changeth — yes, but we ought to be able to preserve beauty and dignity and the sense of service . . . things that have come down very slowly, and can be made to vanish very fast . if we aren ' t set on preserving them somehow. Human nature being what it is, nothing seems to me more futile than to level to the ground and start again . . . Now that the housebreakers are in, one does see that you can smash in an hour what has taken centuries to produce; and that unless you can see your way clearly to replace what admittedly wasn ' t perfect with something more perfect, you are throwing human life back instead of advancing it. John Galsworthy One More River There are many things all of us in the world have never heard of, but that does not mean that there are not such things. There are no such things as weeds, Mr. Axelrood. Only unloved green things. Miss Henry I graduated from four universities: the University of North Carolina at Elkin, the University of North Carolina at Murphy Springs, at Shelby and Swannee. ADULT I ' : i -|lu BOOKS -MAGAZINES y , - ' ' . ADULTS ■I ' — • F T ; ■ir-i.. ' • - ' Lu- ONLY Fall semester of 1971 found enrollment slightly down and tuition up . . . Administration underwent a metamorphic transformation o ' tn ' the summer months. Dr. Robert W. Hites took over the position as Dean of the College. The Office of Dean of Women was replaced by that of Student Affairs, headed by Dean Bethea. John Geary served as her assistant . . . SGA wound up and then unleashed itself on the student body. It first concentrated on Orientation; its main objective was getting new students involved in campus life before apathy caught them. Freshmen were, therefore, treated to a week of open air con- certs, movies and pie-eating contests . . . The curriculum also emerged with a new look as the 4 • 1 • 5 was adopted. Students looked forward to attending classes for four days with Wednesdays off. Many new special interest courses were scheduled, along with the revamped ones ... In an effort to provide activities and prevent the usual weekend exodus, SGA and Social Life co-sponsored what was billed as The Sensuous Weekend. It had the distinct appearance of an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration as students chased a greasy pig, raced tricycles, and had tug-of-war contests. Sensuous? . . . Students and faculty quickly discovered that what had appeared to be an easy semester was nothing but an endless grind . . . The Wonderfulness of Wednesdays soon turned into Meeting Day, as every conceivable committee and organization chose it as being con- venient for taking care of business . . . Believing that students should have a part in planning the courses they must take, SGA sponsored a proposal which placed Laura Andrews and Donna Garnett on the Curriculum Committee with full voting and speaking privileges . . . After innumerable years with the College, Allen Wilkinson resigned as Business Manager and Treasurer. He was temporarily, then perma- nently replaced by Fred Jones, who also continued as Director of De- velopment and Public Relations . . . After years of futile attempts, students were finally able to legally consume alcoholic beverages off campus without threat of expulsion. Consumption of alcohol for on- campus will have to try again next year, or the year after that . . . The unseasonably mild winter afforded the campus a chance to go barefootin ' , as this rule was deleted from the handbook. Perhaps the biggest rule change affected the freshmen, as closed study was abolished, as well as the three-week residency required before an off- campus overnight . . . The campus community became divided among itself as the news of a controversial faculty meeting broke across campus. Dean Hites was questioned about the approximatelv fifteen students who were presently enrolled, yet lacked the necessary academic average . . . Copies of The Odyssey and The III Quill magically appeared in the mailboxes. The issue called for more liberal visitation policies, more action from SGA. and questioned the budget- ing of student funds, particularly those appropriated for the yearbook ... A new underground paper. The Smiling Whisper, appeared in the mailboxes the next morning, also as if by magic. This debut issue was in direct response to The Odyssey and The 111 Quill and refuted the issues it had raised . . . The staffs of both underground papers were threatened with arrest for entering a post office after hours. After the police were unable to discover how they had obtained entrance, the charges were dropped . . . The World Affairs Institute was held at GC for the second year. The keynote speaker, Norman Cousins, was unable to attend because of an unfortunate accident . . . Nostalgia overtook the students as the males staged an old- fashioned panty raid. Not to be outdone, the females reciprocated, and were the decided victors . . . One result of the underground newspaper debate was that SGA evaluated itself in view of its accomplishments and proposed actions. Questionaires were distrib- uted to students asking for opinions and suggestions in all areas of student government. However, students could only express their opinions on a scale of one (strongly agree) to five (strongly disagree) , . . Basketball season began with a new coach. Bob Burke, to shape the squad into a winning team . . . The Social Rules Committee of SGA proposed a bill which would provide open hours for women. With parental permission and a nominal fee of three dollars for the computer card, women could enter or leave their place of residence after it was officially locked . . . The Curriculum Committee voted to abolish the mandatory class attendance forty-eight hours before and after a holiday . . . The Interim Semester offered a variety of courses. Some students chose to get off a required subject, while others signed up for courses designed especially for the short )anuary term . . . Students became incensed with the Greensboro Daily News after its. write-up of the Greensboro-Guilford College basketball game. Playing out of their conference, the Hornets refused to bow completely to their cross-town opponent so easily. The final score in no way reflected the close game. David Lamm of the GDN could find no fault with the Quakers and nothing right with the Hornets. Letters of protest asked for a retraction, but none was forthcoming . . . The cafeteria suffered a momentary setback as a grease fire brought fire trucks roaring to the College. Hamburgers that noon were cooked more than usual . . . SGA successfully passed the Joint Statement on Rights and Freedoms of Students . . . The first weekend in February brought an abundance of events. Homecoming weekend had the traditional game and dance, as well as an afternoon concert. Ping-pong tournaments were held. Dianne Doyle was crowned Homecoming Queen . . . Occurring con- currently across campus was the musical drama. How Miss Henry Got to be that Way. The play and lyrics were written by Dr. Walt Hudgins, professor of philosophy and religion. Roy Prendergast, a GC graduate, composed the music. The play was the end result of Philos- ophy of Creativity, a course offered in January . . . Social Life sponsored a series of video tapes on social consciousness . . . No Parking-Tow Away signs were put up. Curbs were painted a neon yellow. New parking stickers with assurances of enforcement were issued . . . GC travelled to Laurinburg for the DIAC basketball tournament. Winning in the first round on a last second jump shot, the Hornets then lost in the semi-final game by one shot. They easily defeated UNC-G in the consolation game. Steve McClain was MVP. Third place was not all the GC team brought home. Martha Shumaker was named DIAC Tournament Queen . . . March brought with it the- air of unrest. Morning mail contained a surprising letter from Dr. Mobberley announcing his resignation. He cited his reason for leaving as personal . . . SGA ' s president responded with his own open letter. In his own verbose and loquacious style, Sam Leonard thanked Dr. Mobberley for his three years as president. Students, deciphering from the depths of Roget ' s Thesaurus, learned that personal reasons meant pressure from a small faction within the faculty . . . Social Life sponsored a Free University in which students taught fellow students in such varied areas as yoga and breadmaking. Few participated, but those who did found it worthwhile . . . The Faculty Evaluation Committee conducted its survey in a new way. Each student evaluated the faculty member under whom he presently had a class, rather than all of his previous instructors. However, the results of this evaluation have yet to be made public . . . Winter had a last fling in April when it dumped several inches of snow . . . Deans Geary and Bethea announced their resignations . . . Shortly after SGA installed its new officers, a self-appointed committee questioned the elections procedures and cabinet and committee spending. At the close of the lengthy meeting, Dean Abbott and his fellow officers resigned, citing lack of student unity and the fear of a new conservative administration as the reasons for resignation . . . Due to the absence of any officers, no student had the authority to call for a second election . . . Under the auspices of the Office of Student Affairs, a second election was carried out . . . Open meetings were held for the purpose of rewriting the SGA Constitution to prevent the consequences of another mass resignation in the future . . . The May 16th issue of the Greensboro Record carried a front page headline which asked. What ' s Gone Wrong at Greensboro College? The related stories spread across two pages. The majority of students protested the less than representative reports . . . Graduating seniors heard Dr. Glenn Grayson, Chairman of the Department of History and Political Science, speak on the relevancy of a liberal arts education. The student dialogue asked the question.
