Alone in a crowd W ' f find ourselves at the beginning of a bewilder- ing and nebulous experience. That first time alone was empty, cold, and incomprehensible. Perhaps it happened during a coffee break or in the middle of a ballganie. It doesn ' t matter— aloneness isn ' t particular of time or situation. It ' s almost frighten- ing to find yourself alone in a compact community of friends and acquaintances. Then, suddenly and subtly, a struggle begins in the choice of truth and self-knowledge. The rising fright is dispelled, for in this time we are involved in things of the mind, and aloneness becomes a rather pleasant novelty. Then, we realize that being alone is a necessity in our rapidly whirling microcosm— a time to think and de- cide. It is a time we can give to ourselves to gaze into the future, ponder the present, and reflect upon the past. Once the first taste of a certain separate- ness has been ours, we can find our aloneness— even in a crowd.

Here we find ourselves alone for the first time— yet surrounded by- peers, superiors, and inferiors. Here we may find our attitudes accepted by some, yet rejected by most. Never- theless, these are the successes and failures that make us the outstanding figures in the worldly communities. Hav- ing the basic necessities for life and social interaction, our college fills the requirements for a successful com- munity.
