A College is a world in microcosm . . . Greensboro College Greensboro, North Carolina ECHO 1968 Vol. XIVIII K«: ■.■.■■. 1 Greensboro College Greensboro, North Carolina kx .iy- L ' 30 60 114 Academics Activities Sports @ P S 130 Classes nEK S jS 162 Community ■iJJ College is people . . . A college is people— not a word nor administrators and professors; nor even the knowledge obtained by each of its students. But rather, a college is people. It is interact- ion of intellect, of environment, and attitudes. It is laughing and crying, loving and hating, wanting and car- ing for things out of reach. It is sharing and being alone learning and putting off learning until tomorrow. A college is Deoole. Alone in a crowd W ' f find ourselves at the beginning of a bewilder- ing and nebulous experience. That first time alone was empty, cold, and incomprehensible. Perhaps it happened during a coffee break or in the middle of a ballganie. It doesn ' t matter— aloneness isn ' t particular of time or situation. It ' s almost frighten- ing to find yourself alone in a compact community of friends and acquaintances. Then, suddenly and subtly, a struggle begins in the choice of truth and self-knowledge. The rising fright is dispelled, for in this time we are involved in things of the mind, and aloneness becomes a rather pleasant novelty. Then, we realize that being alone is a necessity in our rapidly whirling microcosm— a time to think and de- cide. It is a time we can give to ourselves to gaze into the future, ponder the present, and reflect upon the past. Once the first taste of a certain separate- ness has been ours, we can find our aloneness— even in a crowd. GREENSBORO COLLEGE The first chartered cd- lege for womzn in North Carolina, 1838. Founded by Methodist Church. A community within itself G.C. lias its own unique lenijK ' ranienl. Here we find ourselves alone for the first time— yet surrounded by- peers, superiors, and inferiors. Here we may find our attitudes accepted by some, yet rejected by most. Never- theless, these are the successes and failures that make us the outstanding figures in the worldly communities. Hav- ing the basic necessities for life and social interaction, our college fills the requirements for a successful com- munity. The choice is ours . . . In this myriad-sided microcosm of ours there is a choice which belongs solely to the individual. On- lookers can observe, but only those who make the choice can understand. Four years are ours to exper- iment, deliberate, and choose. Perhaps we will rea- lize an academic pursuit, find love, engage in the didactic, explore sex, or maybe even enter the realm of the ridiculous. These things are our becoming, our striving, our achieving, our failing, our learning. During our four years we seek, choose, discard, and look again— and after the four, the difference will be known. The choice is ours— and the difference is the choice. Reflections of ways of life Ways of life which are as diverse as are the people on our campus, but then, that is what makes a campus. Fall means action. Not just because it ' s leap year do the G.C. girls chase G.C. men. On the contrary, this is a yearly festive occasion. It consists of a Sadie Hawkins type week in deeding a race to the finish for the most derbies per dorm, an egg toss, an ice melting contest, a pig chase, and various other compet- itive sports. A prize is given for the most points won and all is forgotten until another Derby Day rolls around. The girls seem to cause most of the action in the fall. The Emersons and Irvings are more enthusiastic than ever in oposition to each other that is during the powder puff foot- ball game. This year there was even a campus wide election of Al Trotter as Campus King. All in all, fall at G.C. means action. Happiness is many things and G. C. encompasses the greater part of these. It is the actual, unbehevable passing of four years. It is bidding and making a slam at the Stu. Winter brings sledding — or is that traying — to a snowy wonderland. It is a moment alone for some — a laugh, a tease, a certain peacefulness. To the ardent admirers of Slater Food Service, happiness is special meals by candlelight. These things, too, are part of G.C. and a part of each person who comes to spend some time here. Concert Lecture brought new enthusiasm as the various programs showed forth appeal to each student. The season began early with a repertoire of classical and modern piano selections by a fiery Spanish interpreter, Alicia de Larrocha. In February, Welsh-born Emlyn Williams held his audience spellbound with his world-known [wrformance of Dylan Thomas Growing Up. This consisted of various recitations and expressions from Thomas ' early essays and poems. Folksingers Addiss and Crofut came in the Spring with their own unique outlook on the music of today. Drawing from the musical resources of over twenty- seven countries, and various musical instruments, the enter- tainers received a warm and excited welcome. The Coffee House, A lodging for self expression brings a new atmosphere to our campus. Miraculously con- verted by the SCF, the old Psychology Building has become a collage of modern art and feeling as well as a meeting place for those student and faculty members interested in stimulating discussions. The Wit ' s End ' is G.C. ' s embodi- ment of a present, fast moving generation which achieves its expression through speakers, pannels, readings— a sharing and exchange of knowledge, ideas, and ideals. tWIti HORNIS Homecoming, a newly established G.C event is a reunion of friends, a renewal of promises, and a re-emphasis of the G.C. Spirit. The second G.C. Home- coming in the school ' s history was marked by the excitement of still another basketball victory, the selection and presentation of the Homecoming Court and its Queen — Miss Joyce Compton, and a wild melee of noise, laughter, and music at the Victory Dance held in the Student Center. A time of warm welcome, enthusiastic team support, and nostalgic tears of alumni — this was Homecoming ' 68. G.C. Players are involved . . in the lives of someone else. It is after much grueling work and the shedding of a few tears that these lives are exposed to the public in such shows as You Touched Me and Kiss Me Kate. Hats off to those showmen who know by the applause of their audiences that their efforts were worth- while. spring is a feeling . . . beyond the dormitory and classroom walls. It is the time when a man ' s fancy and a woman ' s fanta- sy turn toward the inspiration of beauty. We came . . as individuals among the masses with hopes, ideals, and dreams of things to be. The hngering moments are ones of experience, self-evaluation, and an encounter with truth. We leave as a group who has a knowledge of reality and the ability to see life for what it is. iM. , Academics J the Heart and Purpose of the College, equips the student with knowledge and is the stimulating force behind . . f ' ' i ;; •■I ' They chose to teach. And in so doing, chose to talk: to an eight o ' clock class of closed eyes and peri- odic snores; to a four-hour lab of aspiring biologists and chemists; to an upperclass seminar in which the students fight through stale cigarette smoke to find the profound; and to a rebellious student who can ' t under- stand why he must study the Greeks. And teaching is a matter of reading: reading incoherent freshman themes and watching them become senior theses; reading countless contem- porary scholarly works in hopes of keeping up with those better stu- dents; and reading of the ever- expanding field of research. And teaching is a matter of listening: to those who have learned the thrill of discovering an idea; to those who disagree in spiteful anger, and to those who disagree with friendly knowledge. Teaching is a man with an idea and the ability to communi- cate it— a man with a student to guide, an imagination to captivate, a power to inspire, and a dedication to serve. They chose to teach, and without them the College would lack meaning and purpose. MM ' ' DR. ]. RALPH JOLLY; President of Greensboro College; A.B., Birmingham- Soulhem College; B.D., The Divinity School. Duke University; Ph.D., The Divinity School, Vanderbilt University A message to students, 1968 A college is many things. It is going to class; it is eating together in the dining hall; it is cheering the team; it is en- joying social activities; and it is just plain living through rapidly changing experiences. For all of us it is studying, reading, digging, thinking— or, in short, learning. Greensboro College is changing with the times. Con- servative enough to be secure and liberal enough to be courageous, we dare to affirm that a college like ours has a great opportunity today. We take pride in our Alma Mater and in the students who go from our campus to serve throughout the world. While the critics and the prophets of doom are announc- ing the demise of private education, we on this campus believe that there is a greater need for high quality in educa- tion today than ever before. We also believe that we can and do offer quality education to those who are willing to accept the challenges and meet the requirements. Sincere good wishes to the graduates of 1968 as well as to the continuing classes of our campus family. President J. RALPH JOLLY Dr. Jolly is inaugurated ; boro CfllleKP- the twelfth President of Greens- Jolly Sets Pace There is a particular affinity between President J. Ralph Jolly and the Class of 1968. Both, one might say, were novices four years ago upon entering Greensboro College. Each was perhaps a little wary of the task ahead and possibly somewhat fearful that their own capabilities might not be enough. Each was ambitious and hopeful of fulfilling dreams and achieving goals. What has happened since 1964? Those who have struggled through term papers, tears, and exams, and who have delighted in basketball victories, hard-won grades, and lasting friendships will graduate as the Class of 1968. They have finished one phase of life to go on to another. Their com- panion through these four years. Dr. Jolly, will continue to set the strong pace of progress which has already been char- acteristic of his past four years of leadership. Dr. Jolly assumed the Presidency after having served as Dean of Students at Birmingham-Southern College for six years. After being oriented to G.C. and acquainting himself to the atmosphere of the school, he set to work to provide a comprehensive ten-year plan of imporvement. Beginning in 1966, some of these dreams were becoming concrete. One of the most obvious was the realization of intercollegiate sports manifested in a basketball team — the Green Hornets. In the foreseeable future are plans for swimming, tennis, golf, and wrestling. Physical additions also were in evidence; the J.C. Cowan Humanities Building was opened in 1967, and a new women ' s dorm was begun. The ten-year program also in- cludes plans for a Little Theater, enlarged parking facilities. and more outdoor space for Physical Education. Academics are not being overlooked as the present student body is well aware. By 1970, a faculty of fifty-two full-time instructors is envisioned with sixty per cent holding a doc- torate degree. Variety in departments will increase as will curriculum, which will hopefully include training of kinder- garten teachers, a summer internship program for business majors, development of a pre-law curriculum, and an increase of honors programs. It is evident that this ten-year improvement program as put forth by the President will encompass all phases of college life. Liberal arts will be concentrated on, as a broad education is the chief aim of the school. The ciuestion was raised earlier, What has happened since 1964? Only a part of the answer has been given and only a part of President Jolly ' s dream has achieved actuality. But — here we see potential — here we see power — here we see progress. Graduates of 1968 will go forth knowing that their college days were a period of transition and improve- ment. They experienced benefits of part of the program, but even more is yet to come. Dr. Jolly will chalk up more vic- tories and make more headlines, and when 1974 arrives and the program is realized -the results will be significant. G.C. will have further adapted to the changing world under the dynamic leadership of President J. Ralph Jolly. The ten-year outline will be filled in and expanded, and Greensboro Col- lege will have a promising future. Administrators Play Integral Part in Student Life DEAN OF THE COLLEGE- Elmer L. New Labs Strengthen Art Department With the recent move into new quarters in the Cowan Humanities Building, the Art Department has expanded facilities to serve students, college, and community. Two spacious, well-lighted studios with much new eciuipment, and a classroom for lecture courses insure the practical needs in this area for the growing student body. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the Department is the Gallery which displays works in painting and sculpture of various students and faculty members. It is the aim of the Art Department to contribute to the student ' s awareness of his heritage, his surroundings, and his uniqueness as an individual. The department offers a wide range of study to the interested student — creative writing workshops, studies of the greats in thought and literature, and seminar-oriented glimpse of the Modems. One of the largest departments in the new Hu- manities, English is striving to fit the role necessary to be worth-while and closest to our hearts. oo «♦ T ,, , Judy Gail JOHN HENDERSON LONG; Professor of English. With aspirations to build the Depart- ment, programs for foreign study have been promoted and advised for both faculty members and students. The hope is to instill into those who study a knowledge of the culture from which a language originates as well as a speaking and reading knowledge of that language. Campus-Wide Talent Key To Kiss Me Kate! Under the direction of Mr. Leonard Hart, the Speech and Drama Department shows the student that effective communication is vital to public and private speaking, debate, and the mechanical means of contact today. The Department also provides extensive extra-curricular ac- tivities, the NRT productions being a highlight of the fall semester. The G.C. Players found time between Stage Craft and World Drama to present the two successful and highly acclaimed plays, You Touched Me and Kiss me, Kate! Modem thought is vastly important to the understanding of today ' s humanity; and it is with this in mind that a curriculum of Whitehead, Buitmann, Tillich, and ethical logistics is offered. Music Department Wins Acclaim for School The Music Department faculty, led by Mr. Don Hansen, provides instruction in organ, piano, voice, and orchestra instruments. To supplement the classes are faculty recitals, orchestra workshops, and Glee Club, which is in its second year of being co-ed. Although no one was sent to Europe this year, as was last year ' s Spring tour, the efforts and activities of the Music Department have not slackened. The strains of music — instrumental and vocal — which come from Odell in a steady and unrelenting stream are proof of this. HAROLD G. ANDREWS. Physical Education Builds Discipline The Physical Education Department at Greensboro College has made gigantic strides in the past years. The staff is small, but this does not apply to the ideas and dreams of those staff members. Among the activities offered to six-hundred students at G.C. are swimming, dancing, gymnastics, team sports, cross country, golf, tennis, and an extensive intramural program. Perhaps the most exciting and rewarding event has been the formation of a collegiate basketball team— a new addition to the Dixie Cx)nference in ' 66. Yet, the staff has succeeded in motivating excitement from students in classes as well as in pep rallies and basketball games, and in so doing, has made the growing P.E. Department a vital part of campus life. WILLIE LEE TA ' i ' LOR; Aisislant Professor of Physical Education. B.S., Longwood College; M.S., University of Tennessee. WILLIAM S. Through Psychology We Study Ourselves The Department of Psychology and Special Education serves many functions. It provides the courses that give psychological procedures and knowledge necessary for vocational endeavors. Field trips to related areas are con- sidered a part of the normal course curriculum. Perhaps an apt motto for the Department has been stated by faculty member Dr. David Irvine: Using psychology is fine as long as you use it on yourself. Special Education majors work with audiometer. IRENE MORRISON; Instructor in Chemistry; B.S., Hunter College; M.A., Indiana University; University of North Carolina. Natural Sciences Are Broadened The student at Greensboro College is offered much more in the Department of Science and Mathematics than observ- ing echinoderms and adding numerals. Departmental ex- pansion has occurred in faculty, budget, equipment, space, jjrograms, and students. Equipment grants in excess of $30,000 have been awarded this Department. Students have opportunities for assisting faculty research or experi- menting on their own. This year four students received research grants from the N.C. Academy of Science. Work with the mouse colony from hairloss-conditions to chromosomal effects of LSD offers the student the oppor- tunity for learning and growth. Chemistry, Physics, and Math, though small facets of the entire Department, are also experiencing growing pains, and in a few years it is hoped that these course offerings will become more ex- tensive. Already new spirit can be observed as this Depart- ment makes use of the space left in A S after completion of the Humanities Building. JAMES E. GARNER; Associate Professor of Mathemalics: B.A., M.A., University of Mississippi. M. MYRTIS DAVIS; Professor of Mathematics. A.B., Birminghain-Southem College; M.A., Louisiana State University; University of Kansas. Social Studies Run Gamut The Department of Economics and Business Administra- tion offers the student a chance to develop his own interests and techniques of research and analysis. Programs and seminars this year have offered the student a design spec- ifically for management, development, and self-improve- ment. A major in Economics and Business Administration is exposed to tax laws, marketing functions, corporation finance, accounting, and business law. The study of sociology specifically relates to the inter- action of the individual and the group. There is an attempt to relate the students ' ideas and actions with those events which are contemporary as well as historic — from crimi- nology to race relations to social movements to research and theory. A personal study and a rewarding one is offered the G.C. student from the Department of Sociology. WILLIAM R. FRAZIER; Professor of Economics and Business Admintslra- Hon; B.S.. From Culture To Campaigns The History Department runs the gamut from Sumeria to Viet Nam. One of the most active and enthusiastic depart- ments on campus, history refutes the hypothesis that it is a dead study, lifeless, and without meaning. The four staff members bring into their classes the excitement of learning, questioning, and living. JOHN E. Students function together as individual and unique voices heard far above the bus- tling murmurs of campus activities. To unite is to create. There are those projects which continue year to year, each comple- mented by a renewed interest, yet always setting and obtaining higher goals to meet the needs of the college community. A student can find an outlet for any personal interest and even those relating to his own field of study. The newly formed Inter-Club Council serves as a means by which campus organizations gain greater communication and un- derstanding. The Assembly Com- mittee is instrumental in the selection of speakers and pro- grams which they believe will be interesting and beneficial to the students. The National Student Association is an organization made up of approximately four- hundred universities and colleges in the United States. It sponsors several programs on campus such as the Student Personnel Di- rectory and the College Bowl. The State Student Legislature functions as an opportunity for students interested in govern- ment and politics to exercise their opinions on pertinent issues. Meeting in Raleigh, N.C. for a three-day session, the G.C.S.S.L. and students from other colleges throughout North Carolina hold a mock legislative session. Student officials are elected, bills are passed, and resolutions are made which are referred to the North Carolina State Legislature. John Ayers Chairman Honor Council The purpose of the Honor System is to develop a mature atmosphere of responsibility, honesty, and integrity on the Greensboro College campus. For the existence of harmony in a group, individuals must have respect for the goals and principles of the group as a whole and each individual must perform his share of maintaining such goals. The Honor Council was established to uphold the Honor System, make decisions and hold trials concerning in- fractions, and enforce the decisions made. The Council con- sists of a Chairman, and a girl and boy representative from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes, all elected at large. Areas under the jurisdiction of the Honor Council are cheating, stealing, and falsification. S. KcgKcreis-C irt , A. Trotter. B. Sherrill, S. Garri, son, C. Caiola, C, Neal. The influence of this organization, to which any student may belong, has been felt in a concrete way by the entire campus, especially this year when after weeks of never-ending work, they converted an abandoned building on campus into a coffee house, The Wits End. Every week at a community center in Greensboro, members of this club sponsor tutoring services for young children, and at Christmas they give a party. Their method of acquiring sufficient funds for this project is actually of benefit to the campus — they sell doughnuts! Because Chris- tian Education encompasses a wide range of vocations, the programs of the monthly meetings are designed to present these opportunities, as well as inform members about grad - uate schools in which they are interested. From the first suitcase you lift out of the car onto the campus, the burden becomes increasingly heavier. You come as a freshman who is constantly awake with the wonder of becoming an adult. You return as sophomores with renewed vigor to make the knowledge scene. You come as juniors — resolute in your attempts to know yourself, live life, and find the world. You leave as seniors with the question, What after four? And hopefully, the four years have given you the decision-making finesse to find out, if not to actually know. You sleep through eight o ' clock lectures. You cry in frustration at Administration. You have four years, and you laugh, cry, dance, and sing through them. And perhaps, along the way, you learn a little, discover people — and, yes, maybe you even learn to live. As you pick up that final suitcase, pack- ed and repacked with clothes, lamps, books, learning, and memories, you see the world that goes beyond West Market Street — and it is yours. 132 1 l 1 1 kJ?
