Varigated leaves ride the wind through an open door in Odell Audi- torium. Somewhat restlessly, they settle to the floor, listening to sounds of piano, voice, violin floating into the night. Leaves dance around the entrances to Arts and Science, the chapel, the library, the dorms . . . Varigated leaves, symbolic of the many experiences of college life . . . the cutting and shaping of Time ' s power on the timid Freshman, the confident Sophomore, the complacent Junior, the proud Senior . . . Symbolic of passing opportunity, pausing nervously just in front of us, allowing us just time to reach its brink and consider its values fleetingly . . . Whether to lend it to further development of our newly-discovered knowledge or to allow it to blow aimlessly with no root in human potentiality . . . Symbolic of the variety of individuals who pass through the doors of C. C, each finding a place to stop, to acquire, to participate before riding further into the wind. ARTS AND SCIENCE BUILDING The various phases of activity here at G. C. have found their own individual place of expression. The chemist is as much at home as the virtuoso, for the heating of a chemical in the laboratory is as personal to him as a concerto is to the pianist. The library and the Arts and Science Building are representatives of our academic undertakings. In the halls of Arts and Science, varied personalities and varied subjects mingle to create interest. There are widespread interests — philosophy, science, languages, social sciences, history, education, speech — and the integration of the fields brings to each at least a taste of well-rounded culture. The librory, a symbol of study and research, is besides the day-time abode of art majors and for stu- dents of special education. |AMES ADDISON JONES LIBRARY ODELL AUDITORIUM Odell Auditorium represents another phase of study Here the music students assemble in common interest for theory and practice, and it is here also that the societies maintain their celebrated halls and the Players practice and perform. Assembly on Tuesday marks the weekly trip of the student body to Odell. The chapel, like Odell, is the scene of student body assembly on Thursday when the weekly chapel service is held. Morning watch and Sunday evening vespers are other services planned for worship in the chapel. HANNAH BROWN FINCH MEMORIAL CHAPEL HUDSON HALL TURREN1INE HALL The dormitories are the scene of actual campus life. Hudson Dorm, a Sophomore dorm; Turrentine, the residence of the male students; Main, the scene of Freshman confusion; Fitzgerald, the home of Sophomores and Juniors; and the Greensboro Building, shared by Juniors and Seniors, house the boisterous merrymoking and the serious studying of over four hundred students. Industry, fun and indifference have their flings here behind the com- posure of exterior appearance. The Hut, not unlike the dormitories, is a bee- hive of activity. Here physical education classes meet, the Student Christian Fellowship meets weekly, club meetings are held, and dates are en- tertained. A welcomed place in time of sickness, the In- firmary, our student hospital, is visited at least once or twice a year by most of the students. Culture, inspiration, intellect, patience, fellow ship, understanding — all these are products of the activities carried on in the buildings of our campus. AURELIA BOWMAN CRAY INFIRMARY STUDENT HUT Dedication To us your name is synonymous with our memories of C. C. You have been our faithful companion throughout our four years, always willing for us to pull up a chair and chat for a while. You have been our adviser, general handy man, friend — a personification of the true Southern gentleman. For your self-sacrificing devotion, for your genuine character, honesty, integrity and most of all for your human understanding, we, the Class of ' 58, are proud to dedicate our ECHO to you — Mr. T. Marty, Nancy. Nancy. S Ann Ivey ' s week usually begins with thoughts of get ting the COLLEGIAN organized and off to press and closes with worries about what is going to go into the next issue. Making notations is her constant job, for it is through her that news to the students is published and circulated. At staff meetings on Wednesdays, Ann transforms her notes into assignments ond leaves the COLLEGIAN in the capable hands of her staff mem- bers until the following Thursday. Opening up shop again in the Press Room, she finds t hat interviews have gone on, bits of information have been developed into features, news stories have been accurately reported, words have been counted, and typing done — yes, mi- raculously on time! The dummy is made up, printers consulted, proofing done, and another edition of the COLLEGIAN has reached the students. Ann Ivey Editor-in-Chief Marty Chernault Assistant Business Manager Cail Cherry Editor-in-Chief Fredda Thompson Assistant Editor Publishing this year ' s ECHO was both a pleasure and a challenge. The biggest steps were made last year when the ECHO progressed from a rather trite chronicle of the year to a beautiful, new and collegiate view of G. C. In 1958, too, there are changes. A second color is back, but the traditional senior informals are gone. Although it was impossible to add a complete section on sports to the book, we did succeed in giving more space to athletics than ever before. The ECHO was made possible this year by advice from Mr. Price Coursey from Charlotte Engravers and Mr. Harrie Keck of Observer Printing, who spent scat- tered moments, entire afternoons, and a few evenings guiding us. Again Mr. Miller became a familiar figure at G. C, patiently waiting for people to show up, or not, for his pictures. Also we owe a special thanks to Smith Studio for photographing flu victims and making them look not quite so sick and for making a second trip to Greensboro for those who had been too ill the first time. In the 1958 ECHO we ' ve tried to give you the story of our year at G. C. We hope you enjoy it. he Echo 19 5 8 Mary Webster Smith Business Manager lv - j« BUSINESS STAFF Left to right: Pat Warren, jenelle Snead. Beth Johnson David Ellis, Mary Webster Smith. ' s product of student creativity. Featuring selected works in art, music, and literature, it has become a well- established publication on the campus. The LYRE had its genesis in the desire of students to share with the public the creative work of fellow members of the student body. Work on the LYRE began early in the fall when money-raising plans and advertisement soliciting were of primary concern. This year ' s staff sold sta- tionery as a financing step toward an ideal publication. The selection from submitted material is another preliminary. This year ' s intention is to include a non-fiction selection in each of the issues, one of the firsts of the staff ' s undertakings. Make-up and publication follow, and students ' works reach the ranks of publication. The hope of the staff is to pub- lish the LYRE three times a year to stimulate further student interest in the arts. BUSINESS STAFF EDITORIAL STAFF , Johns, Wheatley, Wright. She Ellen Graham Women ' s Edito lack Fulghun Men s Editor Handbook The chief purpose of the Handbook is to aid in in- forming our new students of customs, regulations and activities on campus, and to be the first step in develop- ing a successful college life. There was a change in this year ' s Handbook, an effort to make it a more accurate, more informal presentation of life at G. C. A co-editor from the men ' s student body was elected to share in its publication, and for the first time it was possible to give our male population adequate representation. Press Bu rea u The Press Bureau, composed of Sara Betf Wheatley, State News Release correspondent; Jo Wright, Greens- boro Record correspondent; and Ann Ivey, Greensboro Daily News correspondent, has keeping G. C. in the news as its primary concern. Furnishing the newspapers with features, news, and pictures, ond covering students, faculty, and general campus activities, these girls work through the Public Relations Office and are paid by their respective employers. A current display of their clippings is posted on the bulletin board in the Arts and Science Building at all times. ■■Ann Ivey, Jo Wright, Sara Bett Wheatley. c ■I Si ■a Si ■■■m pi Features Carolina J i erciitSon 1958 May Queen jrin le 7 1958 May Page I went] eight Cou rt oLunne fcichardi. ■' Son Maid-of-Honor Jti Page Twenty-nine r Ian cit edJie tz 7 Senior Attenda nts DoriA C c on inner ™M rreclclu Jln in Son Junior Atte n d a n ts rrcwriet i rc Frances rorfnt Sophomore Attendants I cilricia LjooiIwu esDoro tn ii Wilson Freshman Attendants i iirette J folli wm? h. .1 s v % Couples enjoy smooth tmosphere of Moonlight and Ro ' • May Day. ..1957 A big moment for Que the Maid-of Honor. Presented in the gala surroundings of a festive May Day Dance, the 1957 May Court assumed a far more elaborate role than the outdoor presentation of the court at the May Day exercises held previously. Presided over by a lovely queen, the court was comprised of a maid-of-honor, elected by the student body, and attendants chosen by the classes. The presentation had as its setting an Old South motif. C. is the Student Co-ordinating Board. It is a unifying agency for the many organizations on campus. The executive officers, together with the presidents of the other major student organizations and the deans of students, compose the Co-Board, as it is familiarly called. The board meets weekly and considers many matters of student interest. It approves projects the other clubs undertake and discusses ways for clubs to make money. One of the Co- Board ' s projects for this year is to make a study of all the organizations on campus and to evaluate them. Mrs. Mizcll, Br, - Johns Bradley, Chernault. This en- abled the students to both profit from and share in the work of the S.C.F. The S.C.F. cabinet members arrive on campus before school starts to welcome the freshmen and transfer students. They sponsor a get-together for new students and set into motion the plans for the year. Since they review all violations of rules, the members are pledged to secrecy. The Board members check in and out cards, and it is sometimes their unpleasant duty to give call downs and restrictions. Every serious case is considered individually and treated accordingly. The Judicial Board tries to be fair, and it is willing to discuss problems wjth students and assist them in all possible woys. The board is composed of four members — Jim Martin, chairman; Jack Fulghum and Dick Coleman, resident students; Gray Spivey and Allen Kivett, non-resident students — elected by the men. The president of the Men ' s Student Govern- ment is an ex officio member. This year they have es- tablished a constitution which became effective during the fall semester. All members of the M.S.G.A. are under the jurisdiction of the board. State Student Legislature The State Student Legislature is a miniature govern- mental body composed of representatives from the various North Carolina colleges. Greensboro College is entitled to send three representatives to the three-day convention held in Raleigh. Each college submits a reso- lution to go before the student legislators. The best of these resolutions are put before the North Carolina State Legislature for their consideration. By working in governmental affairs G. The purpose of this club is to invite to the campus outstanding speakers in the field of psychology in order to encourage further interest in psy- chology and to advance o knowledge of the field. The club heard such speakers as Dr. Adrian Solomon, who spoke on the emotional growth of the child, and Guy B. Philips, who talked on personnel management. Membership is made up not only of G. C. students, but it also in- cludes townspeople who feel that they would benefit from such a club. Mrs. Don Hansen, Ben nett, Richardson, Reynolds, Tise, Cherry. Crawford, Mixon. Religious Education Club The first Religious Education Club, Theta Epsilon, at Greensboro College was organized in 1939. Since then the name has been changed to the Raymond A. They meet for the fun of recollecting ex- periences and for sponsoring charitable projects. Seated: Craver, Hughes, Calvert, Wilkinson. Srand- ing: Carper, Brown, Young, Barton, Lamb, ]ohnson. Home Economics Club Students majoring or minoring in Home Economics make up the Home Economics Club. In the meetings the members dis- cuss the importance of their field. The American Chemical Society meets with the Cenezoic Club once a year. Junior Honor Society In 1938 the Junior Honor Society was organized for freshmen and sophomores who had a minimum scho- lastic average of ninety and other qualities worthy of admiration.
