Songs are what we look upon As forever a part of our life The remnants from our past. What will we think In the distant future. Looking back on “Valley Girls” And gag me with a spoon? Will we once again laugh aloud Or turn away and frown? Songs bring back the magical past Letting our minds vividly relive Special memories of the perfect love And graduation day. Think about future songs Our children will remember The ones we may never hear. They are, as yet to come And the time is in the present So let’s live for now In the glory of today And make our memories The happiest ever. it seems time changes all it pertains to, but your memory is stronger than time ” — “My Favorite Memory” By: Karina Sellers The Best Of Times Freeze Frame 6 Tell Me What You Want 7 DEDICATION 8 COACH GORDON This year our annual is dedicated to someone who has spent all of his teaching years with students. He has encouraged, disciplined and led all his students. This man has been here four years, and during that time has helped change Greenland's attitude towards itself. Pride that comes from self-confidence and the knowledge that one is cared for — pride has been the determining factor in Greenland's new sense of self-worth. And because we are proud of him the 1982-1983 Pirate Staff dedicates this annual to Coach Gordon. Barb Anderson gives the benediction at the Prom. She goes from school to school teaching Health Occupations. She is married and has a set of twins. We are very grateful for her being here. Health Occupations Mrs. Bright teaches eighth grade science and seventh grade math. This is Mrs. Bright’s first year here. She came here to replace Mrs. Adair. We are very glad to have her on the staff at GHS. We all hope she can continue to teach kids to count to 1999. 18 Superin tenden t We would like to introduce you to the man that believes, He’s got the whole world in his hands, or at least the school. We’re very proud to have Mr. Delmar Ferrell as our 1982-83 Superintendent. Mr. Ferrell, after graduating from Rogers High School, attended Arkansas Tech where he received his Masters in Administration. From 1965 to 1971, Mr. Ferrell coached Farmington High School, and then moved on to the position of Elementary Principal at West Fork Elementary School. Mr. Ferrell and wife, Sherry Ferrell have been residents of West Fork for 10 years. They are the parents of DeAnn Risley and David Ferrell. Mrs. Jeannie Parson has been Superintendent Secretary at Greenland High for 6 years. Mrs. Parson is a very hard worker and always does an excellent job. Along with being Secretary she is also Jr. High Cheerleading sponsor. Mrs. Parson has been very active in school related activities, and we really appreciate her. Furthermore, we would like to say we appreciate The wav you do the things you do. 19 Secretary Principal Mr. Bobby Flanagan, who devotes so much time and energy to our school, is the high school principal. Mr. Flanagan works hard for the students, always trying to better the working conditions and school spirit. We all feel we owe him so much. Nobody Does It Better or cares more than Mr. Bobby Flanagan. Working hard by his side, 9 to 5 is Mrs. Rita Boydstun. It’s because of Mrs. Boydstun’s concern that the office runs so smoothly. She helps the students almost as much as Mr. Flanagan. Mrs. Boydstun helps at many of the school activity functions. We all appreciate everything she does. 20 Secretary Principal The Name of the Game for Mrs. Velma Byrum is organization. Mrs. Byrum is the elementary secretary. She takes care of the many details involved in running the elementary office. Mrs. Byrum has been secretary for two years and does a great job! Even in the Quietest Moments Mrs. Joey Folsum is working hard keeping the elementary running smoothly. Mrs. Folsum has been at Greenland for six years and has maintained the role of elementary principal for two years. This mother of three enjoys herself at PTA meetings and other school functions. She keeps the elementary school spirit and pride flying high. We appreciate everything she does. 21 Librarian Mrs. Lorraine Porter is yet another new face. Ms. Porter is the elementary and high school librarian. Don’t let those Betty Davis Eves fool you; Mrs. Porter is gentle in her manner and very helpful when anyone needs help in the library. Business Mrs. Lynn Stout, one of the very familiar faces at Greenland, teaches business classes — accounting, shorthand, typing and journalism. Mrs. Stout also sponsors the annual, the Pirate Times, Kid Stuff and the Pirate Country section in the weekly Observer. Mrs. Stout received the “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” award from the NHS chapter last year. Mrs. Stout graduated from Greenland and the U of A and has remained a resident for four years. This mother of two, we all agree, is quite a Lady. 22 H o m e Mrs. Candace Page spends her time teaching Family Living, Home Ec. I, Home Ec. II, and Teen Living. All of these classes are important to Greenland students because they deal with the reality of what a person must know for preparation of adult responsibility that follows us after graduation. It takes Someone Special to teach and help us understand the problems and frustrations along with the joys and triumphs we will all face someday. Abrakadabra is most likely Mr. Guy Boydstun’s favorite word. He’s, the science teacher of Greenland High School. His schedule goes from tenth grade Biology, ninth grade Science, Physics, Chemistry and Advanced Science. Mr. Boydstun also co- sponsors the Math Science Club and the 1983 Junior class. Mr. Boydstun is very active in the PTA, refereeing sports events and driving a school bus. This father of three three graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a BSE degree. We all believe Mr. Boydstun is quite indispensable. s c 1 e n c e 23 History Band With Mr. Robert Austin, It’s a Matter of Time. The reason for this is Mr. Austin is Greenland’s history teacher. He teaches Civics, American History, Geography and World History. Along with all of this Mr! Austin sponsors the sophomore class and the Greenland National Honor Society. He has taught at Greenland for six years. We appreciate his time and effort in teaching us our heritage and the heritage of others. We would like to introduce The Leader of the Band — Mr. Tracy Meadows. This is Mr. Meadows’ first year at Greenland. Mr. Meadows instructs seventh grade band, the senior band, chorus, elementary music, fifth and sixth grade band. He also co-sponsors the freshman class. Mr. Meadows graduated from Arkansas Tech. We are quite happy to see Mr. Meadow’s spirit and have him join our faculty. r V 24 Science-Ma th Math Mrs. Judy Adair teaches eighth grade science and seventh grade math. Mrs. Adair also co-sponsors the 1983 senior class. This is her second year with us. She graduated from the U of A. We are very glad that Mrs. Adair is still with us; teaching junior high isn’t as easy as it may sound. We would like to thank her, A Woman Like You is Hard to Find. Two Doors Down you can find Mr. Ron Townsend, the junior and senior high math teacher. Mr. Townsend’s schedule of Algebra I, II, advanced math. Calculus, Trigonometry, and General Math keeps him on his toes, but along with all of this he sponsors the junior class and the Math Science club. Our appreciation for all he does goes beyond words. After graduating from the Univ. of Texas Mr. and Mrs. Townsend moved to West Fork and have been living there for three years. 25 J r H l g h E n Mrs. Gloria Silkwood teaches the junior high Right and Wrong in punctuation, spelling, and grammar. She also helps sponsor the 1983 freshman class. Mrs. Silkwood has maintained residence in Fayetteville for six years. She attended the University of Arkansas before she moved here. Mrs. Silkwood has one son, Courtney. We would like to thank her for her time and patience with us. Sr. High English Mrs. Katherine Novak, who puts Poetry in Motion everyday at Greenland High teaches English. She also sponsors the senior high cheerleaders and the 1983 sophomore class. Mrs. Novak graduated from the University of Arkansas and has taught at Greenland for six years. Graphics Temporarily Yours is Mr. Randy Campbell who teaches Graphics in the trailor. Mr. Campbell travels to different schools every semester, and we were lucky enough to have him with us this first semester. Next semester we will have Gina Young teaching Health Occupations. Shop When Mr. Peter Milburn goes to Knock on Wood he’s not joking. He is Greenland’s own Shop teacher. This class is taking on more and more popularity, as skill is formed and used in the safest way. Mr. Milburn is also co-sponsor of the eighth grade class. He and his wife, Melissa, and daughter, Sarah, live in Fayetteville. Mr. Milburn plays guitar in a band during his free time. We’re glad you’re here Mr. Milburn! 27 Coaches Coach Darrell Gordon has been with us for five years. Coach Gordon coaches the Senior high basketball girls, seventh grade athletic girls, junior high athletic boys, and physical education. When there is Night Time Magic on the GHS football field Coach Gordon can be found assisting the other coaches. Coach Harry Moore, who has been with us for three years, is the head football and baseball coach. Coach Moore also coaches Physical education, 7th grade athletic girls, Jr. high athletic girls, Jr. high boys athletics, and teaches health to the Sophomores. We would like to introduce you to one of our new faculty members. He is Coach Ken Marshall. Coach Marshall has been teaching 8th grade Am. Sponsor Mrs. Adair Fellowship Of Christian Youth FCY is an organization made up of the Christian young people in the high school who are totally dedicated to the Lord and have a concern in their hearts for the lost youth in the community. Our purpose is to share the gospel with these youth and our goal is to see these young people commit their lives to the Lord. We feel we have been called together for this very purpose and have great plans for future outreach.
