Excitement is like a shooting star that makes all who experience it sparkle. Excitement is the energetic thrill in your voice that moves the wishes of others together with our own. Excitement is the image of one’s self that penetrates and reveals the unseen. Excitement brings much more than laughter and happiness. A lesson is often taught that shows us a little more, to prepare ourselves for the unknown adventures we have yet to explore. It’s the kind of thing that is contagious Its effect on people can be outrageous Whether at home, at school, or at play It helps our lives in many ways, By making things seem more enjoyable. XCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCITEXCIT EXCITE Excitement Is Dedication With great pride, the journalism class of 1981 has selected Mr. Robert Austin for our annual dedication. He has taught history at Greenland for the last five years. He is well known and re- spected by every student at GHS. Mr. Austin graduated from Decatur High School in 1963. He attended Arkansas Tech in Russellville for two years. He then graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1967, with a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Science and Education in the field of Social Studies as his major. He then went to graduate school and holds the rank of a Master of Education with a major in Secondary Education. While in college, he was a member of the frater- nity of Phi Alpha Theta, an honorary history fraternity. Before coming to Greenland he taught Social Studies at Cassville High School, in Missouri, from 1967-1970. His last two years there he was their senior counselor. In addition to his teaching responsi- bilities, he is also a sponsor for NHS, FCY, and he is a very avid supporter of the various sports at GHS. We would like to sincerely thank him for his support and concern for the individual student’s education at GHS. To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship. To raise the standards of home life. To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. The officers for the 1981-1982 PTA, are as follows from left to right: President-Virginia Mattke Vice President-Shyrlie Stout Secretary-Leona Mote Treasurer-Gayle Baugus To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth. To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education. School Board Duties Of The Board It is the general duty of the Board to provide a school system and to establish general policies in keeping with the wishes of the community and the requirements of statutes. The Board of Education is the legislative and judicial body for the school; it exercises both of these functions. It is not an administrative body — this function being delegated by the Board to the administrative staff and faculty. The school board officers for the 1981-1982 school year are Bobby Lee, Earvel Fraley, Kenneth Pinkerton, Glen Anderson, and Ron Tomlinson. These men work very hard, deciding what is best for the better education of our students. We th? k them for their time and effort. Mrs. Jeannie Parson is the secretary for the superintendent. She helps Dr. Algee keep all of his appointments straight along with all of her other work. She is also a sponsor for the Jr. High cheerleaders. Dr. Harold Algee is the superintendent of the Greenland school system this year. We think he is doing an excellent job keeping the school running with ease. 10 s u P e r • i n t e n d e n t Among other things Dr. Algee has done at GHS, he has started a new course entitled Personal Development. It h as been very useful in helping students improve their self- image, and their attitude. Secretary The principal for GHS is Mr. Bobby Flanagan. He does a great job running our school on a day-to-day basis. He has also been a big factor in raising the level of school spirit this year, and also helping students have more pride in our school system. Mrs. Rita Boydstun is the secretary for the high school. She handles everything from making out tardy slips, to keeping the deposits of money straight from all the organizations and classes. She does a great job keeping the GHS office in order. Principal Elementary Principal This year we are happy to have Mrs. Joey Folsum as the elementary principal. She was formerly a six grade teacher here for three years. She is doing a great job keeping the elementary running smoothly. Along with the new principal this year we also have a new secretary, Mrs. Velma Byrum. For the past few years, she has assisted teachers at Greenland elementary. We’re glad to have her as the new secretary. Mrs. Byrum keeps the office running very orderly. 12 B u s • 1 n e s s Librarian Mrs. Lynn Stout is the business teacher at GHS. Mrs. Stout’s classes consist of Typing 1, Typing II, business math, shorthand, journalism, and accounting. The journalism class would especially like to thank her for her time and patience with us while working on the annual. Mrs. Ann Algee is the librarian for the high school and elementary schools. She is very helpful with any students who may need help finding a particular book or magazine. She helps the younger ones learn about the library by using card catalogs, book numbers, and many of the other useful things the library provides. This year GHS is proud to welcome Mrs. Judy Addair as our Jr. High math and science teacher. Her classes include 7th and 8th grade math and science, and general math. High Math is one of the most important courses a student can take. We are happy to have Mr. Ron Townsend as our math teacher, some of his classes include geometry. Algebra I and II, and advanced math. He is one of the most hard working teachers we have at GHS. Math Jr. High Math Jr. High English English is a very important part of every student’s educational process. Sr. High English is taught by Mrs. Katherine Novak. This is her fifth year at GHS. She teaches literature and grammar to Sr. High students The Jr. High English teacher is Mrs. Gloria Silkwood. She has been here for five years and has done a great job teaching Jr. High students. High a H it' English History We are very happy to have with us again this year Mr. Robert Austin as our history teacher. Mr. Austin works very hard teaching about what has happened in the past so we will know more about what will be happening in the future. He also teaches civics, a very important class concerning how the government works. Science Science, a very important class in learning how and why things work, is taught by Mr. Guy Boydstun. He also teaches biology, the study of living things; physics, the study of matter, energy and motion; chemistry, the study of the composition of matter; and 9th grade physical science. 16 We would like to welcome back Mr. Doug Haase this year. He has been teaching band for four years and has done a great job. In addition to his band classes, he has also started chorus, and he’s doing a fine job with them. He also teaches music to the elementary students in the afternoon. He’s a wild and crazy guy that we hope will return next year. Mrs. Page also teaches family living. This class helps students become aware of all the real responsibilities of a family, along with teaching about consumer education, family planning, insurance, banking, career planning, aging, and just about any other area that you will need to know about when you have a family of your own. Mrs. Candace Page is the home ec teacher at GHS. This is her third year here at Greenland. She makes home ec very interesting by teaching different things such as how to buy furniture, how to shop wisely, nutrition, color coordination, along with the traditional things such as cooking and sewing. 17 Shop Mr. Peter Milburn is the shop teacher at GHS. He is one of the most liked teachers here. He is also a sponsor of the Senior class. Van Mr. Audre Pfau is the mechanics teacher in the van this semester. The van is part of the Boston Mountain Education Cooperative in which Greenland, West Fork, St. Paul and Elkins exchange every semester. The other three van courses include graphics, electronics, and health. Mr. Bob Moore is the electronics teacher in the van. GHS is very glad to be a part of this program, which helps students learn about different trades. 18 Many improvements have been made in the athletic department this year including raising the lights to make the ceiling even in the gym, painting it a different color and reworking the bleechers and painting them. The department is also enjoying the use of the video-recorder purchased by the board. Filming of athletic games and practices aid the athletes by showing them what areas they need to improve in. Tom McMurray is the head coach for football and track. He also coaches the Jr. High boys’ basketball team. Eighth grade history is taught by Coach McMurray too. Harry Moore is the head baseball coach. Along with this he coaches the Jr. High football team and the Jr. High girls’ basketball team. To complete his already very busy schedule he teaches health to the tenth graders. 19 The resource room teachers are Mr. Virgil Blackwell and Mrs. Lucy Livingston. Mrs. Ann Bailey teaches reading. The resource room helps students who are having trouble with their classes. It also helps older students deal with different responsibilities. Counselor GHS is very happy to have our very own counselor this year, his name is Mr. Cliff Rogers. Mr. Rogers is always glad to help anyone plan their future education, whether it concerns scholarships, financial aid, or deciding what college to attend. In addition to counseling students, he also teaches 7th grade geography. 20 Cooks Shyrley Stout, Sharon Center, Joanne Stoker, Virginia Mattke, Oleta Holmes Bus Drivers Tommy Mattke Bob McChristian The 1981 Senior Class Presents Head’n Fur A Wedd’n Directed By Doug Haase I ■ ■ ■ Cast Pepper Hollowbone Donald Bradshaw Sis Hollowbone Lisa Hankins Fannie Jane Barbara Anderson Hollowbone Gracie Mae Cindy Penrod Hollowbone Sarah Jo Hollowbone Trina Center Maw Hollowbone Sheila Shelton Paw Hollowbone Kevin Dickard Melissa Dugan Kem Fraley Homer Hollowbone Steve Sullins Hortense Todd Rhonda Caudle Gran' Pappy Jeff Potter Isabel Denise Beeber Wider Blairhouse Pam Bradshaw Slitn Blairhouse John Rogers Bertha Blairhouse Tini McConnell I Jr. Play The Boarding House Reach Cast Wilbur Maxwell Hercules Nelson Betty Lou Maxwell Connie Maxwell Bernadine Smith John Maxwell Janet Maxwell Aunt Mary Limpy Mcguire Nora Mcguire Hoiman ‘‘Ninety-Volt” Jones Roughhouse Ruby Mr. Potter Lucy Burns ■ Mrs. Mott Connolly Jon Andrews John Standley Barbara Anderson Colleen Wilcox Cindy Sanders Robin Cordell Beverly Carter Wanda Ramey Jerry Coyle Barbara Ellis Dean Parson Lee Alice Wilson Keith Tinsley April Curtis Susan Hughes John Rogers Athletic Banquet Brent walks away with an award. SCENE Coaches’ Point Of View Coach Moore- I have been really impressed with the improvement that has been made in all the different sports at Greenland this year. Community support and school spirit have helped to improve our pro- gram. 1 believe that all athletes in our program have made an effort to commit themselves to being the best athletes they could possibly be. With this continued support from the community, school, and especially the greater drive and determi- nation from our athletes, Greenland will definitly continue to be successful in all areas of athletic endeavor. It has been a very fun and rewarding experience to coach at Greenland this year. Coach McMurray Coach Gordon- This has been a most productive year for athletics at Greenland High School. There has been much improvement over the past three years in our teams, our facilities, and our attitude. I can truly say that I have been very fortu- nate to be a part of this program. Many times we only look at the final records to decide how good or how bad our teams really are, and that is truly a misjustice to all athletes. These young men and women spend many hours preparing for the ultimate con- test. The desire and dedication these athletes showed this year have made me very proud to be a PIRATE! I can only wish the best for this program for the future. Looking back on the 1981-82 season of athletics, I feel there was some progress in our total program. Starting with the two football teams I think we can be proud of the desire and leader- ship that was shown. This same attitude was carried over in bas- ketball and led to one of our best winning seasons. The girls’ bas- ketball program has become very strong and will continue to get better. It is a feeling that is felt by everyone at different times in The feeling of scoring the winning touchdown, making the last second shot to win a basketball game, or making outstanding grades on your semester finals, these are all feelings of excitement. Many people experience the feeling of excitement in other ways such as getting a new car or going out on a date with that special someone. The seniors are excited about graduation night they know that now they will be out on their own. It is time to achieve the goals that they have set for themselves. The annual staff has tried their best to capture some exciting moments of the 1981 82 school year that has just passed. They put them all together so that you may cherish these exciting feelings as memories forever. • Barbara Anderson AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS 125 AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS 127 AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS
