Pirate Cog Foreword An annual serves as a record of past accomplishments. It is a book of memories. As such, it doesn't reflect the true temper of the na- tion and world of which the school is a part. Today, the world and the American democracy that we hold so dear is facing a severe test at home and abroad. Many of the values our school has tried to im- part should become increasingly more important. May we so play and manage our future that the important experi- ences of our lives will bring both honor and satisfaction. Sincerely, The Editor 'Dedication To our helpful and most wonderful teacher who has rendered every service possible to uphold the spirit of Greenland High School; to one who has worked without ceasing for our educational improve- ment; to one who encouraged us and guided us in all our undertakings; who from her first year at Green- land taught us willingly, faithfully, and with the fullest capacity. She will be remembered by each Greenland stu- dent, both present and past. For all these things which cannot be expressed fully with words, we thank you and proudly dedicate the .1961 PIRATE LOG to you . . . MISS WOZENCRAFT ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Greenland School will be in the fu- ture what the students, parents and fac- ulty want it to be. With a new high school building and other facilities added, Greenland can be proud of her physical plant. With full co-operation of students, parents and faculty, I feel that Green- land has a bright future. After a pretty miserable mid-season, the Pirates settled down and played outstanding basketball. The Senior Boys started off real strong, then went into a mid-season slump. After the holidays they started to jell and finished up in fine fashion. The Pirates boasted of two of the fastest guards in the league in Doyle Reynolds and Jimmy Helton. They specialized in defense and ball handling, but both could score. Bill Harbison was our top scoring threat and did a good job rebounding. Teddy Morelock was our workhorse on the boards and a deadly shooter out of the corners. John Wallen was the most im- proved boy on the team. Having never played any Senior basketball, you could see progress in John each game. John grabbed off a lot of rebounds for us. Helton, Wallen, and Harbison are Seniors. Their record is 14 wins and 10 losses. (above) Just won another trophy. The Senior Girls' basketball team only lost to Class A Alma in regular season play. They won the Conference, Prairie Grove In- vitational Tournament, County Tournament, and were runner-up to Alma in the West Pork Invitation- al. The team as a whole showed great speed and ball handling. The Pirate-ettes had good shooters in Kay Martin, Linda Anderson, and Dixie Anderson. The guards showed steady progress. Record: 17 wins 3 losses. TRACK Linda Anderson, Kay Martin, Rosalee Crawford Dixie Anderson Velma Hughes Barbara Rieff Norma Parrish Judy Rogers Shaaron Beard JUNIOR BOYS’ BASKETBALL (L. to R.) SEATED: Danny Tibbs, Larry Tomlinson, Tommy Lee, Garry Parrish, Randy Center, Eddie Yerton, (back) Eddie Smith, Danny Hudson, Bill Alexander, Larry Shaffer, Cecil Alderson, Bill Knapp Although lacking the big boy, the young Junior Pirates carved out a respectable season record on hustle and spirit. The Junior Boys have two fine outside shooters in Garry Parrish and Tommy Lee. Although not blessed with great size, Larry Shaffer and Danny Hudson have contributed with good rebounding. Both have scored fairly consis- tently. Randy Leo Center did not shoot much but was a fair little ball handler. We had a young bench, but it improved each week. Their record at this time is 12 wins - 6 losses. FOOTBALL Coach Ed Staggs, Ronnie Alderson, Tommy Lee, Harold Barnett, Larry Shaffer, Danny Hudson, Cecil Alderson, Garry Parrish, Randy Center, Larry Tomlinson, Bill Knapp, Bill Alexander, Mike Hatridge, Billy Lunsford, Eddie Yerton. CHEERLEADERS: Donna Barton, Patsy Williams, Shirley Hughes, Zora Peterson, Rosalee Collins, Sherry Martin. PLAYERS: Glenda Ramey, Jacque Martin, Patsy Bauchman, Arlene Mullin, Geraldine Yoes, Lanita Woods, Carolyn Cordell, Carroll McCoy, Anna Ruth Omohundro, Pam Benson, Donna Hughes, Judy Tate. The Junior Girls' basketball team showed tremendous improvement each day. None of the girls saw much action last season and were a little green at the start of this season The 8th grade girls carried much of the load this year and did a good job. Next year's Junior Girls should be hard to beat. Their record: 6 wins and 4 losses.
