Like ripples in a pond, empathy radiates outward to larger and larger circles of people, On beautiful, rare occasions they share a smile. . . empathy is emotion shared . . . Man neither searches for something only for himself not seeks all by himselft Being a social creature, he grasps truths in unison with companions. Students walk through the halls, exchanging fleeting smiles and quick remarks with the faces of passers-by before they move on to others passing by. On beautiful, rare occasions, though, they share :1 smile coming from behind the facial facade. A sudden communication bonds two spirits, a brief moment fading t0 a lingering memory. Finally they reSume their walk through the halls in anticipation of the next time, but even distant faces have their place in the memory of a friend.

The process of learning is a magical one. Wfith only a book, a globe, or a slide rule, we don seven league boots and stride through vast realms of knowledge. Trans- ported into the lush world of Shelley 0r Keats or the electric atmosphere of the forum during Antony's funeral oration, we can be 21 realist, a romantic, an optimist or a pessimist. Under the microscope, myriad creatures fumble for identity. Call them microscopic organisms, but, like us, they must be called alive; for, just as we find growth in discovery of them, they find life in search of food. We relive the struggles of history pretending that their problems are ours, and with problems tackled and ques- tions attempted, we face the world with our own thoughts, our own feelings and opinions. To complete the empathy of the soul the student reaches out for spiritual guidance Atone in a quiet corner a proud student contemplates. Yet, overcome by the magnanimity of God, he lowers his head and meditates, bowing his head to the force which has made him wholeehumility to complement exhilaration. We find growth in discovery. 1: s E Burma to Brooklyn: millions of miles of salt sea V . . or a fingtr's slide.
