Down the aisle twelve years long I'll walk with arrogant pride. In his future lies the familiar church, unchanged, waiting with the guidance it gives. The sometimes vague, sometimes dormant, and sometimes keen desire to learn, The process of learning is a magical one. Wfith only a book, a globe, or a slide rule, we don seven league boots and stride through vast realms of knowledge. Trans- ported into the lush world of Shelley 0r Keats or the electric atmosphere of the forum during Antony's funeral oration, we can be 21 realist, a romantic, an optimist or a pessimist. Under the microscope, myriad creatures fumble for identity. Call them microscopic organisms, but, like us, they must be called alive; for, just as we find growth in discovery of them, they find life in search of food. We relive the struggles of history pretending that their problems are ours, and with problems tackled and ques- tions attempted, we face the world with our own thoughts, our own feelings and opinions. To complete the empathy of the soul the student reaches out for spiritual guidance Atone in a quiet corner a proud student contemplates. Yet, overcome by the magnanimity of God, he lowers his head and meditates, bowing his head to the force which has made him wholeehumility to complement exhilaration. We find growth in discovery. 1: s E Burma to Brooklyn: millions of miles of salt sea V . . or a fingtr's slide. Like ripples in a pond, empathy radiates outward to larger and larger circles of people, On beautiful, rare occasions they share a smile. . . empathy is emotion shared . . . Man neither searches for something only for himself not seeks all by himselft Being a social creature, he grasps truths in unison with companions. Students walk through the halls, exchanging fleeting smiles and quick remarks with the faces of passers-by before they move on to others passing by. On beautiful, rare occasions, though, they share :1 smile coming from behind the facial facade. A sudden communication bonds two spirits, a brief moment fading t0 a lingering memory. Finally they reSume their walk through the halls in anticipation of the next time, but even distant faces have their place in the memory of a friend. . a silhouette in deep com- munion with my own . . . Identification with a cause. The communication with truth and beauty, of one soul with another, is the primary purpose of the arts. In music, painting, literature, dance, and drama, the student recognizes universal truths and takes pleasufe in the entertaining, and rewarding cultural aspects of the world around him. Enraptured by the brilliant color and dazzling sonorities 0f Debussy, assimilated into the person of someone else7 or engrossed by the philoso- phies of Plato, students attain spiritual comradeship with truth and beauty. Beauty lies also in the tangiblehin mist, swaying grain fields, lofty peaks, undulating cloud masses, and the quiet desert. Nature relaxes, entertains, secludes and holds youth in her cool, unchanged hands. Music, the most empathetic of the arts; tones and rhythms create moods, feelings. Nature relaxes, entertains, secludes and holds youth in her cool, unchanged hands. The fascination of lines and shapes and movement. The spirit of the artist is reflected in his work. On the stage, a dancer uses my wulk. incorporates it into graceful motion, elaborates, pirouettes. Ion O ' Inlstrat 0 d n a Y .h u C a F m d A t-w Mr. Ray A. As always, these Juniors had the year-end goal of a memorable Prom. To raise money, they operated the coat-check at all home basket- ball games, sold white mums before several of the away games, and sold Christmas bows during December. The class sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance in November and the Mr. Basketball Dance in February. Class officers also promoted a Slave Day on which raggedIy-dressed Juniors did odd cleaning and repairs around the school. In March the class elected Jean Schmidt and Ron Key as their representatives to Girls' and Boys' State. Finally, in early May, the Juniors ended their year of hard work with an elaborate Prom, using the theme Hawaiian Holiday. Since that time, by stringent application of its entrance qualifications and by continued service to the school, the Honor Society has gained recognition as one of the school's most important organizations, The high school confers no higher honor than meme bership in the National Honor Society. This year the society again printed football and basketball schedules. In addition, the society posted a sprEng sports bulletin board to tabulate Greenhills standing in the various sports. In October, members 501d Booster Bars to raise money for the annual N.H.S. scholarships. Well, if my senior picture looked like that . , , 96 The 1965 Pioneer is the product of hours of picture-taking, layingout, writing, and public rela- tions. The yearbook originated in September as a list of page headings and a budget. As the months passed, group pictures and candid shots were taken. The business staff sold advertising, took subscrip- tions for the finished book, and plotted ways to stretch the budget, At each approaching deadline annual staffers kept the lights burning until ten at night and on Saturdays camped in the art room. Teams designed pages, wrote copy, proofread, and indexed each name on every page The Pioneer trains its staff members in business procedures, in photographic, layout, and writing ability, and in leadership and management. Within its pages the annual contains an entire school year of people, clubs, sports, and activitiesh This year eight more pages were added to the Pioneer to increase coverage in such areas .15 sports and organizations. Annual staffers gain experience in creative expression. l965 PIONEER Staff The lure of annual staff draws laborers over all obstacles. 4 .i' f FOREGROUND: Larry Bauhaus, Linda Passmore, Steve Castner, Rick Erazo, Pete Eberle, Bill Broomfield. We hope that it has recalled for you some of the interest, excitement, and even the frustration and hard work of this past year. The editors of the Pioneer would like to extend their thanks to the many people and organizations who helped to make this year- book a success. In particular we would like to thank the G.I-l.S. faculty and administra- tion for their leniency at our many interrup- tions, the clubs and classes who donated money, and the creative writing class for much of the copy in our introduction. We would also like to thank the Osborn Photo- graphic Studios for our many educational exv periences at their hands. We give the busie ness staff our most generous thanks and the regular staff members an extra hard pat on the back for their efforts. Who can ever forget those thrilling karate duels or the torrid love scenes which enlivened our work- ing hours? TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY m.
