Tx X Q Volume XXII 1972 wma mmwww 23 . f Q A x fig , In Loving Memory . . . ,lock Prather We became juniors when Jock graduated, and he was therefore one of us, and he was the first of us to enter the earth. Hewas class president, yes, student council president, class favorite, and the greatest athlete of Greenhill,s history: and all of us have read his array of awards displayed in the foyer. But we remember him better for how funny he was, how hard and furious he played, how he argued and cajoled, how he loved to fight for peoplels rights - especially the rights of Short People Everywhere. Of friends, he was the best, the funniest, the most thoughtful, the most loyal, though you had to expect him to spend some time now and then chasing girls and working on Liehchen,l' his Porsche. None of us look forward more enthusiastically to our own lives than did Jock to his - and a life it would have been, filled with Jock's own kind of strength and gentleness and energy and sensitivity: a life that ended in sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the groundf, ln his sweet memory we dedicate this twenty-second edition of the Greenhill Ccwalcade. In Loving Memory . . Cher l l mer Cheryl's death in mid-September, so soon after ,lock's, was a particular blow to us. We remember her smiling an impossible proportion of the time, her being enthusiastic and sympathetic in turn in all our eagernesses and our hurts. We remember how firm she was in the old study halls, how she tried to disguise the fact that her spelling wasn't all that great for an English teacher. How excited she was last year when her husband finished law school, when they found a new apartment, when she finished her own master's work at SMU. How seriously she took being a teacher, how she loved her students, how she built as we put together the open school, but how she loved an ice dayf, And now she is gone. Mostly we remember how beautiful she was, how bright, how happy about living and about the future. Nothing can have changed that in her. And to that beautiful memory of Cheryl we dedicate this twenty-second edition of the Greenhill Cavalcade. The season opened auspiciously with a 6-to-2 win over Bishop Gorman. Cooper Blankenship scored the touchdown on a four-yard run behind the blocking of J im West and Bruce Watson, and ran for the extra point over the blocking of West, Watson and Darrell Hurmis. John Boudreau was the leading tackler of the game with 14 tackles. But we weren't yet ready for Crandall, whose superior squad was to go on to an undefeated season. Losing five fumbles put Greenhill too far behind to recover in time. John Boudreau led in tackling again, followed closely by Ken Mosesman and Ken Cowens - all with 19, 16 and 15 tackles respectively. The Hornets bounced back against Fort Worth Christian for a 12-0 win. Cooper Blankenship ran the first goal from the 1-yard line over the blocking of J im West, Bruce Watson and Darrell Hurmis. Then Cody McCutchin scored the second touchdown, with ,lerry Szor and ,lim Robison blocking. An outstanding defense by the front four held the Fort Worth team to a negative 7 yards gain and made the game one of which the team could- be proud. Fresh from victory over Fort Worth Christian, the Hornets stormed on to a 26-to-0 win over Trinity Valley. Cody scored in the first quarter with a 13-yard run, and threw the 56-yard pass that enabled Darrell to score in the second quarter. Kevin Cowens ran two great touchdowns for 60 and 40 yards in the second and third quarters, but both were called back to Kevin's and Greenhill's keen disappointment. Jerry Szor made the third official touchdown from the eight with the blocking of Wyn Armstrong, J im West and Bruce Watson. Cooper took the extra point. Cooper then capped the game with a fourth-quarter touchdown, aided by the blocking of J im Robison and Robert Morton. We werenlt yet strong enough for Cistercian, though, who defeated us for the only time in their history. Darrell scored on a 49-yard pass from Cody, and also gave us the extra points. But our defense could not stop the Cistercian drive to victory. Winning days returned again when we came from behind in the final quarter of the Howe game to make it 20 to 14 at the gun. Cody completed 10 out of 17 passes, giving seven of them to Darrel Hurmis who took them for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wyn Armstrong scored the extra points in conversion as a result of a deflected pass. Jerry Szor led the team in rushing - 81 yards - behind the strong blocking of Ken Cowens and John Boudreau. We kept on winning that high-scoring night on October 22nd when we rolled over Sacred Heart for a 38-22 victory. Cooper and ,Ierry each scored two touchdowns, and Darrell and Ken Mosesman bagged the other two. Ken brought in the extra points over the able blocking of Wyn Armstrong, Keith Chatham and Robert Morton. Country Day put us in our place on October 30th, though, when we went down for a 13-0 loss before a strong team that was only to give up 12 points in conference play this season. Darrell Hurmis caught 4 passes for 87 yards, but we could not stop the opponent's running back. From November 5th on, however, it was to be smooth running for Creenhill's varsity squad as Greenhill handed defeat to Dallas Christian for the first time in six long years. Cody McCutchin ran the opening kickoff 85 spectacular yards, and Kevin Cowens, Darrell Hurmis and Ken Mosesman made the touchdowns. The teamwork to unify the Hornets paid off in a fine 7-3 season that wound up on November 12th with the Hornets' victory over Northwest Academy 14 to 6. .lim Robison ran 35 yards for the first score, and Cooper ran 65 for the second, with blocking by Robert Morton, ,lim Robison and Jerry Szor. He hit 10 points and pulled in 8 rebounds. Jim gave the Hornets good bench strength throughout the year. Scott Beard, also a sophomore, came off the bench several times during the season to steady the Hornet effort. One such game was against Wichita Collegiate. Scott sparked the team with one steal and four assists in the second quarter. Greenhill went on to win 65-57 in overtime. Scott led the team in free throw percentage with 6496. Tommy Box, the only starting sophomore for Greenhill, added strength to the Hornet five as he averaged 7.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds. He played well in the Hornetis first win over Kincaid, rebounding 10 times and scoring 8 of Greenhill's 51 points. And against Wichita Collegiate, Tommy hit 12 points, including a crucial basket in the overtime period. Tommy scored in double figures in a third of Greenhill's games, including a 141-point barrage against Cistercian. Darrell Hurmis, a junior, quickly became known as Greenhill's 5,9 jumping guard in the 1971-72 season. He tied Rick Miller as the team's second leading rebounder - 7.8 per game -- was second in the steals department - 2.6 per game - and showed a cool head and a great deal of unselfishness in leading the Greenhill five in assists - 3.6 per game. Darrell averaged 8.2 points per game, scoring 22 points against.Trinity Valley and 10 and 14 points against Fort Worth Country Day. Perhaps his most inspired play came in a double overtime losing cause against Palmer when he finished the game with 12 points and 11 rebounds. He set a team record with 13 assists against Wichita Collegiate. Darrel was elected to the Second Team All-Conference TISC Squad. Kevin Cowens, also a junior and a co-captain, took over the quickness department for the Hornets, leading the team in steals - 3.0 per game. He was Greenhill's second leading scorer at 12.5 points per game, and second in the assist category at 2.7 per game. Kevin scored in double figures in 16 of the 27 games he played, having particularly good nights against Palmer - 26 points and a 57'Zn field goal average - Sanger, when he scored 21 of our 55 points, and Cistercian, scoring 29 points and pulling a 4-2'Zn field goal average in two games. He was awarded Honorable Mention All-Conference Honors in both SPC and TISC play, and made the All-Tournament Teams at Crandall and Red Oak. Kevin set a Greenhill team record with 10 crucial steals in the 63-59 victory over Frisco. Rick Miller, one of Greenhill's two starting seniors, brought his game together in the second half of the season, averaging 16 points per game in the last 13 games. He was second in three statistical categories: rebounds - 7.8 per game, field goal percentage - 37.4-'Zag and free throw percentage - 59.445, including one string of 13 consecutive successful free throw attempts. Rick played an incredible game against Cistercian, scoring 10 of 25 points in the fourth quarter and pulling in 12 rebounds. He shot 56722 from the field and 100 'Zn from the foul line. He made 3 crucial steals and four points in the closing minutes of the Wichita Collegiate victory ending his one year basketball career on a sweet note. Rick proved to be a most sought after target on the receiving end of the Hurmis to Miller fast break combination, scoring many demoralizing layups during the year. i Martin McCord, senior co-captain and the only returning starter from the championship 1970-71 Hornet lineup, solidified the team at his center position. In twenty-six of the twenty-nine games, Martin scored 10 points or more. He hit 20 points against Sanger, 25 against Palmer, 24- against Frisco, 20 against Ft. Worth Country Day, and 21 against Ft. Worth Christian. Martin led the team in rebounds 19.3 per gamel, scoring Q14-.6 per gamej while shooting a blazing 49.629 from the field. He showed great hustle for a 6,47 player, from the first of the season he led the team on fast breaks after playing solid defense. Martin set a team record for consecutive free throws made, he hit 16 straight over a 3 game span. He played his best game against Kinkaid, scoring 19 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in the slowed-down Greenhill victory. Greenhill's opponents felt his presence under their basket as he blocked many shots during the year. Martin was elected to the All-Tournament team at Crandall and was Greenhillis only representative on the All-TISC First Team. The Hornets missed the five seniors on last year's team. It was said that this was to be the year to rebuild. But Greenhill followers became proud of their team that rebuilt with victories and continued the growing tradition of inspired basketball play. It was a season of the unexpected. Against Palmer, the Hornets scored 50 points in the first half, yet lost in a double overtime as all five starters sat on the bench with five fouls. Yet in the final game of the season against Wichita Collegiate, Greenhill fought back from a 15 point deficit at half time to win by eight points in another overtime game. A rampaging Dallas Christian team dumped the Hornets 82-39 early in conference play. But Greenhill came back to play the Chargers off their feet on foreign soil in a two point loss later in the season. The Hornet quintet provided many thrills in the 1971-72 season. Coach Long will remember the fine effort of his Hornets next year as he builds his board game from a strong B team squad. Greenhill School lets go of this season only because time requires that it do so. But Miller's athletic talent and sheer good luck will be remembered as will McCord's hustle and leadership.
