The school aims to keep the children's interest alive, actively doing actively thinking, actively learning self-discipline, actively becoming a member of the school group. A school contributes rnost to a child's future by giving him satisfaction in his school life, and by letting him share in determining what it shall be. This helps the student build a deep interest and desire to participate in the living prob- lems of his home and community. R. J. Green CONGRATULATIONS: What duties will be expected of the class of '5Z? Certainly not an attitude of indifference or cynicism, or fear. It has been your privilege to attend an American public school, planned and promoted by men like Thomas Jefferson and Horace Mann to produce a people who can manage their affairs intelli- gently. You graduates must have faith in the destiny of the American way of life. We, the faculty, believe that your tasks are mainly three fold. First you must find a place in our economy and earn a satisfactory living: second you must learn to get along with others in their home, their community, and their world: and third you must be able to do your part in governing and furthering the ideals of the democracy in which you will live. We sincerely hope that you will achieve these objectives and that your future will always be abundant and full. H. w. Rigby R. J. Green SU PER INTENDENT H. W. Treasurer lk lk if Ik lk wk lk lk lk if As the curtain rose on the play High School Days in GHS the Juniors thought, as every other class, that they had the leading role. But they were confronted with many perplexing problems. One of the first functions was the presentation of their successful class play, The Million Dollar Cook . The net proceeds of the play were added to the Junior -Senior banquet fund which they were constantly striving to increase. The big moment had finally arrived: it was now their turn to entertain the Seniors at the high light of the year, the Junior -Senior Banquet. They chose for their theme Oriental Gardens . As the evening got well under way, the class realized that all the ir efforts for a successful banquet had not been in vain. The Junior boys contributed much to the athletic depart- ment and were also active in mus ic. Not to be outdone by the boys, the girls were active in music and the various organi- zations, in which many of them held high offices. Four of the six cheerleaders were Juniors. A large number of Junior boys and girls found their names on the honor roll. Now as the year has drawn to a close, their experiences have given them many happy memories. Though they cannot fortell the future, they look forward to next year when their class may carry on the Greenfield traditions. fa., w 1 w 1 ff . J. 'lf f fem Y ,WM AV 5 - 4 315 l' xg . If you have never had such an experience, you should join the Tiger Tales yearbook staff. Co- Editors, Ann Power and Mary Frances Poffenberger, learned via the midnight oil method that meeting the publisher's deadline presented many problems. Long before the shipping date, the copy had to be written, typed, and proof-read: pictures taken, printed, selected, trimmed, and pasted as you view the layouts. Lookin at an earbook cannot possibly con- O vey the work behind each page. g y y To aid in this task, Senior editors and Junior assistants rolled up their sleeves and collected the material. This was followed by a period of siftin , re -writin and re -t in . All of this takes money. Under the guidsnce of Mars Roberts?,5tatgf members sold subscriptions and solicited advertisements to raise the necessary budget. The co-editors needed some help in telling their story so they con- D sulted the art editor, Jeanette Wight, with their problem. In a few d days, Jim and Jane were strolling among the students in their classes, e at the athletic games, and wherever students were to be found in order to get first hand information. They also found that they could best conduct their tour of activities by checking the press room of the Tiger Tales Publishing House and inspecting the work of its editors. We the editors sincerely hope that all of those who read this book, will find the 4th publication on a par with the First Class Honor Rating book oi last year's staff. They gave half- time performances for the Creston, Winterset, and Guthrie Center games. E arly one bright September morning, everyone boarded the busses and headed towards Ames for the annual Band Day performance. The forty bands that attended began parading, one at a time, onto the field at 12:30 a.m. By game time all the bands were grouped around the field and the mass band played the National Anthem. The band also took two other trips, one to Des Moines to play at the Drake-Iowa State football game, and another to Des Moines to hear the Marine Band. Before every home game, weather permitting, the band led the students around the square as a climax to the pep meeting. Donna won a First Place trophy in the competition at the Creston Band Day and a Division I rating at Shenandoah. She also performed at the football games. A brilliant passing offense, sparked by Bub Bitcon, led the Tigers to a 2.6-Z0 victory, Playing on a very wet and slippery field, the Tigers were downed by the Redfield Bulldogs the following Fri- day night, The loss was by the slim margin of one point, 7-6, On September 28th the Winterset Huskies proved to be too much for the Greenfield team as they won by one touchdown 12-6, The Tigers suf- fered a big loss when Bitcon injured his collarbone in this game. Guthrie Center ruined the Tigers' Homecoming, October 5th, with a score of Z1-0. The Tigers being riddled with injuries couldn't get their offense rolling. Carl Schwartz played his usual outstanding game on the line, A determined Coon Rapids team, fighting on their home field, rolled over the Tigers with little trouble. The team played their worst game of the season and were defeated 24- 0. Although the Tiger defense played at its peak, the offense was still unable to click, as the team ventured to Stuart, Stuart had no trouble romp- ing Greenfield 19-0. SITTING: KNEELING! At Lenox, it was Greenfield all the way as the Tigers achieved their second vic- tory, The shifty running of LeRoy Onken gained him the title Back of the Week in the Omaha World Herald. In the fourth quarter Wendell Winn picked up a kickoff on the twenty-five yard line and went all the way to tally for the Tigers making it 33-13. Starting without seven of the previous year's letterwinners, the Tigers, under the coaching of Bob Norris, launched the season with a 55-43 victory over Zion, What the team lacked in experience they counterbalanced with spirit and deter- mination. A battle to the end was the game be- tween Greenfield and a powerful Trojans of Atlantic, which took place before a capacity crowd of tense spectators. This 44-41 victory was probably the biggest thrill of the season to the team, the coach, and'the Tiger fans. We were especially proud of Bub's Z7 points. After winning the first four games we met our first defeat at the hands of the Orient quintet. With two other attempts the Tigers were still unable to outscore the 1952 county champs. Harold struggling for the ball while Bud anticipates the outcome. County tournament tirne found the Tigers paired with Adair in the first round of play. Winning this game we advanced to the semi- finals.where we againrnet defeat by the Orient squad, During the Consolation round the team defeated Fontanelle 64-35. ln this game Clark Roberts peppered the bas- ket with Z4 points to win the top honors, Traveling to Stuart proved that the team still had potentiality when the fighting Tigers trounced Stuart 74-46. Bub Bitcon and Wendel Winn sizzled the net with Z6 and Z ipoints respectively. It was unfortimate for the Greenfield five to draw Creston, the number two team in Southwest Iowa as their opponent in the sectional.
