GREENFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY 402 MAIN STREET GREENFIELD, MA 01301-3305 4 ' • ' ? t ' - .,, • VI‘••si The whirlwind year comes upon us quickly, envelopes us, tosses, pushes, shoves us, then abruptly ends, and leaves us looking back, breathless. It whirls away with our tears, our laughter, our experiences, heartaches, joys, leaving us only our picture-book minds, memories. Another unique year is gone, leaving us smiling at good times, good friends, regretting harsh words or deeds or wasted time; we look back at its passing, happy, sad bewildered. The Evergreen with words and pictures strives to capture just a glimpse of the uniqueness, the beauty, the love, the living of this one year, the year of 1966. Table of Contents Foreward 2 Dedication 5 Academics 17 Activities 33 Youth 73 Advertising 155 Acknowledgements 192 3 VOCATIONAL SCHOOL The vocational shop is an integral part of our school. Here boys learn lessons which will be¬ come valuable tools in the working world, the skills of a printer, carpenter, machinist, or auto mechanic. The boys become active in extracurri¬ cular activities from varsity sports to student or¬ ganizations, often helping out other organiza¬ tions by printing materials and constructing props. The boys would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Packard for his understanding and guidance throughout the years. Mr. John Thompson, the Class of 1966 dedicates this Evergreen to you. It will be a long time before we forget how much you’ve done for us. You be¬ lieved in us when others still treated us like chil¬ dren. When we were discouraged and tired you took the time to listen to us, to give us a word of encour¬ agement when others said they were too busy. You laughed with us, cheered at our games, sympa¬ thized with us. For your understanding and guid¬ ance, we thank you Uncle Jack. DEDICATION TEACHER CANDIDS “1 . . . 2. . . 3. . . 4 Give me $25 on Pytha¬ gorean Polly! ‘‘My wife gave me this haircut!” Through the years teachers have played an important part in our growing up. Sometimes they have appeared as unreasonable to us as we must have appeared to them. Sometimes we felt as though they had skipped their teenage years altogether and so could never understand us. Some of them, however, have been a great influence in our lives. As we get older our ap¬ preciation grows. In moments like those pictured here, we have laughed at them, but the laughter has created stronger bonds between student and teacher. ‘‘You bellowed?” ‘‘Out, damned spot!” 7 8 There were the moments of quiet. Times when it was enough just to be close to someone you liked, to be able to touch him. Times for sitting alone in the lounge or listening to records or quietly studying. These were the moments for the dreams of yesterday, the visions of tomorrow . . . the quiet times at G.H.S. 9 ' 4 f i ' There were moments of relaxation. These were the times to jok¬ ingly threaten a friend, let loose a pet snake, examine the na¬ ture of a super ball, or just whoop it up in the cafeteria. When the snow fell we went tobogganing and when the sun shone we congregated at the Pump or at the Beacon Street courts. At these times new friends were made and old friendships strengthened — friendships which will last long after the me¬ mories of G.H.S. have dimmed. 10 There were so many things to do after school — Teen Scene and Exponent articles to write and type, meetings to attend, dances to organize and the cafe to decorate. In our last year of high school the responsibilities were greater than ever before. We were now the leaders, new ideas and their execution were up to us. Booster Day, the Senior Play, graduation exercises, these activities had to be carried out by us. With these responsibilities, these pressures, the adult world slowly, yet in some ways all too quickly, engulfed us. I 13 There was the great new world out¬ side of school to — and we found the time to explore it. The adult world merged with ours as we found jobs to earn extra money and to gain experience. There were the hours we spent helping others; as candy stripers, as part of a church project, as members of various ser¬ vice organizations. There were dance bands to form, hobbies to pursue, sports to master. These were the times to free the curiosity, to release the vital enthusiasm of youth. 15 We look behind us at the past year and dream, for every yesterday is but a dream. The year is at an end but the memories remain; of Booster Day and a loyal horse, of Senior Slop Day and “Arsenic and Old Lace,’’ of Championship Cross-Country and Basketball teams, of elec¬ tions and dances and endless classes. Time goes forward yet still we pause and look to the past. Academics j SUPERINTENDENT WILLIAM R. WRIGHT A.B., M.S. Dartmouth College Indiana University SCHOOL COMMITTEE IP ilij Gerald I.
