P , | £i-rT ' ? ' 4 ' ' ' ' T ' - ' 4 The Evergreen Nineteen Hundred Sixty Five Greenfield, Massachusetts Youth is a time of growing, learning, discovering, and simply enjoying life. It is an exciting and adventurous time, but it can also be a lonely and disappointing time. The spirit of youth, a nebulous and far-reaching force, can be found every¬ where, in the classroom, at a pep rally, on the football field. It can quickly change tears to laughter, ridicule to respect, hate to love. It can be loud and vibrant, or quiet and pensive. It is a powerful, dy¬ namic force, yet it is a transient one, sel¬ dom found in adults. The spirit of youth is, however, a vital part of our lives, and should be retained as long as possible. But it is a quality which is difficult to define or capture. Words are inadequate to express the essence of this spirit. The 1965 Ever¬ green tries with pictures to capture as best it can the spirit of youth. Perhaps it has failed. Perhaps nothing can capture com¬ pletely the spirit of youth. It is hoped, however, that in these pages will be found some measure of the spirit of the Class of 1965. Reineke. Although he has been here only two years, his ready smile ?nd sense of humor have won him many friends. Last year under the direction of Mr. Reineke, the students of G.H.S. put on one of the most successful talent shows ever seen in these halls; and this year with his help the student monitors transformed the lobby into a Christmas wonderland. Although the job of a disciplinarian can be difficult, Mr. Reineke combines his dis¬ cipline with an understanding which seems to lessen the punishment, yet makes it more effective. To Mr. Reineke the Class of 1965 dedicates the 1965 Evergreen, for he is a man who has truly retained the spirit of youth. II SUPERINTENDENT WILLIAM R. WRIGHT A.B., M.S. Their leadership enabled our class to have a successful year at the Senior High School. On October 28, we held our first class meeting. At this m eeting we were introduced to our class counse¬ lor, Mrs. Scroggins. Mary Vetterling explained the National Honor Society and its requirements for ad¬ mission. The signihcance of this society was later im¬ pressed upon us at the induction ceremonies in Feb¬ ruary when several members of our class became members. We also discussed the Thanksgiving Day Dance which was sponsored by our class. The chair¬ men of the committees for this successful dance were as follows. Mary Varner, publicity; Bob Richardson, tickets; and Kathy Tusinski, decorations. Robert Phelps’ instrumental group, the Vy-Counts, was hired for entertainment. The sophomore class constructed the huge bonHre for the Booster Day Rally. Our class put much spirit into this project since we were competing with the Se¬ niors who were to construct their bonHre for the Thanksgiving Day Rally. For the annual football game rally Thanksgiving time our class built a float consisting of an eight foot football between two huge goal posts. A Turners Falls dummy was hung from one goal post. Jo Anne Gali- pault and Susan Hanley, as the chairmen of the pro¬ ject, supplied the ideas and energy necessary to pro¬ duce this masterpiece. As Christmas approached our sophomore class lent its support to the student council’s drive to collect food and clothing for the Salvation Army. Our sophomore year at Greenfield High School has left a greater impression upon us as individuals that we as a class could hope to imprint in its history. Our class of ’67 will strive to maintain honor, loyalty and scholarship in our remaining years at G.H.S. 62 Homeroom 202 ROW 1: L. Belleau, M. Boivin, D. Babineau, D. Beaudoin, J. Behaylo, S. Borer. Sondra Tyndal, an active member of Student Council and other school organizations, heads the class with the coveted title of Miss President for the second time. Diane McIntosh, also a second timer, is the chief assistant to the a s¬ sistant chief (our chief, of course, being Mr. Thompson) as Vice-president. Jane Yetter is our ever busy scribe. Sheila Kelley collects the money from class dues and sadly paid it back out again as Junior Prom Day approached. We started the school year off with our grand entry in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Rather than have the conventional little display on a huge vehicle we had a big display on a little vehicle. Our Turners Indian was as riddled on our float as he was on the football field the next day. Christmas time came and with it came parties and skiing and for some — a little rest. Then came January, and midyears and then — the Junior Prom. And what a Junior Prom it was! I’m sure that if we had another chance we’d all want to spend another “Night m Shangri-la.” The food was delicious, the floor show was stupendous, the queen and her court were radiant, and the decorations were out of this world! Cherry blossoms, colorful murals, and a striking pogoda graced the gym, while Mt. Fuji instilled in us the spirit of Japan forever. The Junior Prom over, the grind continued with its good times and bad until in June we watched the Seniors walk down that aisle in caps and gowns to receive the little piece of paper which led to the outside world. And tears glistened in a few eyes, not only because these were our good friends that were leaving us, but because we now realized that next year at this time we would be walking down this same aisle to receive our passports to a new life waiting beyond — Our class of 1966 has but one short year left. 68 Homeroom 212 ROW 1: W. Each senior, upon leaving Greenfield High School, will take with him, of course, his own memories of certain classes, a favorite teacher, or his special friends. He will also take with him memories shared with the whole senior class. This year was certainly a year of new leadership for the class. Of the four officers, Ricky Richardson, Ken Burdick, Rickie Rood, and Gail Rogers, only Rickie served last year. For the first time in many years the class elected an officer from the vocational school, showing that it is an integral part of the whole school. All of our officers were monitors, as well as active members in many other organiza¬ tions. Ricky, as master of ceremonies at our pep ral¬ lies, always was able to raise our spirits to great heights, and with the Playboys he became a familiar figure to everyone. One of the first times we demonstrated our ability to work together was in preparations for the Thanksgiving Day rally. Having been challenged to a woodpile raising contest by the Sophomores, we readily showed that we were a class not to be easily beaten. While the boys were busy collecting wood, the girls worked diligently on our float, the “Green Wave.” Despite the attempts of the rain to wash away our wave, our float -survived, and though damp, headed the Thanksgiving Eve Parade. Again at Christmas the seniors, leading the school, demonstrated their abundant spirit and good will. Under the direction of Mr. Reineke, the student monitors transformed the lobby into a magical land of evergreens, tinsel, and gaily wrapped presents. Throughout the school the spirit of Christmas prevailed, and the Student Council, under the direction and initiative of President Robbie Pratt, collected a huge amount of food, clothing and toys for the Salvation Army. Christmas over, the following months passed quickly in a whirl of parties, one of the largest and most successful being the one at the Weldon Hotel. Some seniors began their search for jobs after gradua¬ tion while others anxiously waited for their letters of acceptance from colleges. Graduation Day, always considered as one of the most memorable occasions in a person’s life, passed quickly in a blur of activities and tears. We remember only vaguely the speaker’s words, for through our minds rushed the myriad memories of a senior year long to be renfembered. Publishing a YEARBOOK Is As Simple As To the casual reader a yearbook is often simply an “album” of pictures with written text. Merely ink on paper . . . though nice to own and enjoy. But to the staff and adviser the yearbook means much more. For yearbook work comprises a multi¬ tude of details: Layout, Art, Photography, Copy, Typography, Covers and Binding, (not to mention the small detail of money-raising). Highly techni¬ cal and often time-consuming and a source of anx¬ iety to a staff unless the publisher’s representative is trained to give needed help and suggestions. At American your publisher’s representative is a member of the school’s yearbook team. He is skilled in the many facets of yearbook work, hav¬ ing at his fingertips the answers to yearbook prob¬ lems as well as a multitude of ideas. He is always there when you need him. This is why we say “Publishing a Yearbook is as simple as AYC.” Don Lendry Publisher’s Representative A C Y American Yearbook Company Cambridge, Md. Hannibal, Mo. Topeka, Kan. Vasalia, Calif. I would first like to thank Mrs. Lousia Barclay, my ad¬ visor, who was always willing to help whenever needed.
