PROLOGUE In the past, yearbooks contained pages of writing — such as wills, prophecies, and class histories. However, the trend has changed. To¬ day yearbooks are filled with pictures depicting school life for a particular school year. The large amounts of copy have been replaced with many snappy sayings, interesting captions, or running headlines. This idea of eliminating tedious copy has been adopted so that the book will be one of memories of a school year, especially for the graduating class. We have used this format In our 1964 EVERGREEN, which has been written as a play entitled Around G.H.S. in 180 Days. Let us set the stage for you. The action takes place in and around Greenfield High School; the time is from September 1963 to June 1964. The story of the play is true; it is told as it actually happened. The actors are GHS students playing their natural roles. As the play opens the cast is seen entering school in September. As the days go by we see the characters in the play performing In various classrooms and also in extra-curricular activities. The months pass and finally the climax comes — COMMENCEMENT — for the seniors. The curtain falls as the 180 days, packed full of hapy times (and sad ones, too) come to an end. We want all of you readers of this yearbook to enjoy it. We espec¬ ially hope that you graduates — many of whom may not see each other again — will find our 1964 EVERGREEN a reminder of the friends and good times shared at Greenfield High School. 2

DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF - John Fitzgerald Kennedy 1917-1963 We, the Class of 1964, proudly dedicate the 196 4 EVERGREEN to the memory of our late President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. We would especially like to pay tribute to him for his interest in the Arts, People everywhere felt a closeness to John F. Kennedy, but Greenfield High School students have a special reason for remembering this great man. While serving Massa¬ chusetts in 1958 as a United States Senator, John F. Kennedy came here and dedicated Greenfield High School. The Class of 1964 was indeed fortunate to live in the era of John F. Kennedy. We trust we have grown in wisdom from his example and will continue to follow his ideals. We can only hope that we will have the fortitude and strength to live up to his chal¬ lenge to Americans — Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country. To the memory of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy we dedicate this book. Irene Menard, Editor 3
