Text from Pages 1 - 170 of the 1963 volume:

THE Greenfield High School Greenfield, Mass. Foreword This, the 1963 EVERGREEN, is essentially a book of pictures depicting school life at GHS. Compilation of a good yearbook is not an easy task as new ideas are at a premium. We have changed the format — chiefly elimi¬ nating written descriptions and using instead witty sayings and entertaining captions. New and original layouts have been incorporated. The EVER¬ GREEN, with its varied pictures of places and events, has undertaken the task of recalling happy memories — some unhappy — for the Class of ’63. Fellow classmates may often refer to this annual for a pictorial record of school activities and achievements. We could not capture the intangibles, but we have tried to summarize with photographs and words those wonder¬ ful times at GHS. As years go by may you show this book with pride — ever proud like the stately “evergreen.” Sandy Singiser, Editor yJcL Jk ' T- 3 9,VV- a zr f63 2 Contents Evergreen Staff EDITOR SANDRA SINGISER ASSISTANT EDITOR BETH WINER S. CHAR- BONEAU BUSINESS MANAGER DAVID SAUTER Dedication We, the Class of 1963, dedicate the 1963 EVERGREEN to a group who have given so much of themselves to us and who, in turn, have received little apprecia¬ tion from us. They have been with us, not only in our senior year, but always. The love and devotion of this group have helped us to turn dreams into reality. Our achievements, failures, sorrows, and joys were shared by them. Their guiding hand has given us mental, physical, and financial security. Our faith and hope were often renewed because of their interest and concern in us. It is through their living examples that we have learned kindness, generosity, and humbleness. Along with our teachers, members of this group have devoted an infinite amount of time imparting knowledge to us. Therefore, “from these roots,” we have grown into useful, meaning¬ ful members of society. We pause now to express our deep love, respect, and appreciation to them for all they have done, so that each one of us might become strong and sturdy like an “evergreen,” and do proudly dedicate the 1963 EVERGREEN to OUR PARENTS. Appreciation We, the Class of 1963, would like to give special tribute and thanks to two men, Mr. John A. Murphy and Mr. James J. O’Neil, Jr., who have been, we feel, a very close part of our class. Serving as our Guidance Counselor in our sophomore year, Mr. Murphy helped us with our problems so we would become better students. He gave freely of his time and knew each of us as individuals. Although Mr. Murphy served as Vice-Principal in our junior and senior years, he maintained his sincere interest in the Class of ’63, ever willing to help us in the same friendly manner. Many members of the Class of ’63 had Mr. O’Neil as a teacher of English and Social Studies. His classroom atmos¬ phere not only challenged us, but it was always enjoyable. Mr. O’Neil took time to know students who were not in his classes and with his wit and charm won their hearts. We take this opportunity to express our sincere APPRE¬ CIATION to Mr. Murphy and Mr. O’Neil who have helped us live three of the happiest years of our lives. JAMES J. Two new clubs were started: the Key Club and the Varsity Club. The Key Club was un der the leader¬ ship of a senior president, Ceorge Quadrino, and senior boys helped bring the Varsity Club into reali¬ ty. The new Student Patrol System was under the di¬ rection of seniors. Something entirely new, the “Teen Scene,” a page in the Creenfield Recorder Gazette edited by the local junior and senior high schools made its appearance. Under the influence of seniors the price of the “Exponent” deci iased. Seniors also produced a spectacular play, “Grandpa’s Twin Sis¬ ter.” (We had many offers to produce the show on Broadway, but being a modest group we gracefully 20 refused! Besides, we had too much homework!) After Christmas vacation we came back with bright ’n shining faces, lots of New Year’s Resolu¬ tions, cases of Metrecal and No-Doze. Finally, after a long, hard, cold winter the momentous month of June rolled around. First, there was the Senior Prom where everyone had a wonderful time. Then came graduation. As we marched into the auditorium we made only a few mistakes. (But after all, we’d only practiced marching since February!) That day of graduation on June 25, 1963, was probably the most important day in our young lives. It was both an ending and a beginning. The Senior Class of 1963 now surged on to do great things in the world of tomorrow. r ' EMILY BERTHA ANNAN “Emmy” I “There is a friend who sticketh closer than a brother.” I 1 We, the Class of 1963, JAMES DENNIS ARCHER “Jim” “Silent and quiet until you get to know him.” HELEN JEAN ANDREW FREDERICK DAVIS ARTUS “Rick” “Men of few words are the best men.” CAROL ANN BABITS “Carol” “Infinite riches in a little room.” 21 ROBERT CHARLES BACIGALUPO “Bob” “A plain-spoken man of a very few words.” ROBERT CHARLES BAILEY “Bob” “Better late than never.” EDWARD RAYMOND BARTAK “Edju” “Ask me no questions. Sophomores immediately got into the swing of things at GHS by sponsoring one of the first school dances. On Thanksgiving they held the “Plymouth Rock” and were pleased to see so many of the stu¬ dents and alumni in attendance. (By the way, the name of the dance was a combination of Plymouth — relating to Thanksgiving and “Rock” — a name of a dance, which helped to stimulate interest in ticket sales.) Goal posts, green and white decorations, and “Plymouth Rock” enhanced the cafeteria. Officers pictured above have been active in Junior High School. Steve, Robby and Sue earned Silver J’s last year and at present are playing in the school band. Steve is Secretary-Treasurer of homeroom. Karen served as President of Tri-Hi-Y last year and is recently active in the Pep Club. With such capable leaders and a willing class we Sophomores hope to uphold the GHS Motto: Loy¬ alty, Honor and Scholarship. 90 HOMEROOM 202 ROW 1 — L to R: S. Brightman, S. Baird, B. Anderson, G. Our Evergreen” was made possible to a large measure by the businessmen, firms, and friends, who have placed ads herein. They have shown their interest in GHS. Why not show them our appreciation by patronizing them first? Thank you. Members of the Evergreen Staff 128 Drilling five IVs deep holes at once in forged steel “spiders” for universal joints, these drills move in and out about as fast as the eye can follow on this high production job at the Saco-Lowell Automotive Division plant in Saco, Maine. At this speed, even a few minutes down time means considerable loss of production. That’s why they insist on quality tools, tools they can depend on to stand up day in and day out, month after month, tools that are uniform order after order. Specially researched GREENFIELD-AMPCO drills have been on this operation longer than any other make in the long history of this gruelling job. greenfield TA.P DIE greenfield, Massachusetts BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 1963 ERIC D. Your diploma is the symbol of a wise investment in per¬ manent values — values that will be a sound foundation for con¬ tinued growth, wherever you go, whatever you do. Sometime in the future you will have a need for tools — for your job, or your hobby or home repairs. When this time comes, look for the Millers Falls trademark — the symbol of permanency on tools. Since 1868 we have constantly searched for better materials, designs, and finishes to give lifetime utility to the tools we manufacture. Given reasonable care these tools will “season” in use, taking on a character all your own and will be lifetime friends known and proven by the work they perform. I realize this and I want to publicly thank my Assistant Editors, Eileen Pulaski and Beth Winer, for their patience, work, enthusiasm and dil¬ igence. To the other members of my Staff I am deeply grateful for their ideas and cooperation. Our advertising section is a credit to Alan Oates, Manager, and a special thank you goes to Mr. Howard Boucher of the faculty who coordinated the Advertising Staff. Mary Tucker, Secretary, and David Sauter, Busi¬ ness Manager, gave freely and willingly of their time and effort. To Miss Marion L. Congdon, our Advisor, I wish to express my gratitude. With her experience, advice, and friendly understanding, we have published a fine book. Without her, the job would not have been so much fun, nor such a wonderful experience. Thanks again. Miss Congdon. Sincerely, Sandy Singiser Editor 156 I Greenfield High School Yearbook. 7 6 099 Evergreen : 1963 GR3?9.?44 G81 Greenfield Public Library ' ■ For Reference Not to be taken from this library IMf J ..f. greenfield public library 3 7403 00049 210 1
