Senior Class Play Is Opening Night Hit STRANGE BOARDERS” a three act mystery-comedy by Qeorge Batson and Jack Kirkland directed by Miss Marion L. Congdon FRIDAY and SATURDAY DEC. 11th and 12th GREENFIELD HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM Curtain 8:00 P.M. Marked by an abundance of praiseworthy stagecraft, the Green¬ field High School Senior Class play, “Strange Boarders,” enjoyed a successful first night perform¬ ance at the high school auditor¬ ium last night. Farce comedy built on the story of a colorful bank robbihg gang’s visit to a zany boardinghouse near Boston, the play scored a steady chain of solid laughs in an audience of 500. A larger gathering of 700 or more will see the second staging tonight. Gay Sinclair is the chief play¬ er in a story which begans slow¬ ly and developes into a quick¬ paced, laughable romp. In the role of a kindly, fluff-witted boarding¬ house keeper. Miss Sinclair carries a long part lightly with airy charm in a laudable i erformance. Other leading parts saw Bill Cokeley as Smiley, the derbied mobster, and Don Parda as Boston Benny, the gang boss complete with maroon pants, snap brim hat and long key chain. They both garnered a good share of laughs as did Sheila Scott and Sandra Gustavson in their lively portrayals as a couple of bank rob¬ bing molls. Competent comedy by Ronald McDonough and Denny Smith, as residents of the boardinghouse, and Stephen Long, as Deacon, another of the gang, added to the hilarity. Anton Mushovic, as Joey of the mob, contributed to the humor in a brief part which is brought to a sudden close by his demise in the first act. Evelyn Conant delivered a thoroughly convincing acting Job in the role of Mrs. Myrtle Hodge, the righteous welfare worker. Completing the cast were Deneige Morrissey, Janet Mc- Nicholas, David KeUy, David Robert and Maureen Touher, all of them turning in steady perform¬ ances. Miss Marion L. Congdon rates encomium for her direction which saw the cast near perfect in its lines and in the complicated stage work which involve d dozens of fast-moving entrances and exits. Milo Galbraith, William Sears and Mrs. Jessie Brown were in charge of the crews which provided the play’s well-equipped set. Chairmen of the other commit¬ tees were Mrs.. Carolyn Weissen- born, costume: Chester Osgood, make-up; Robert Casey, prompters, and Benjamin Sander, publicity. ( The senior sextette, also di- .■ rected by Miss Congdon, sang at the two intermissions, en- tertaining with “Whispering,” .j “Charmaine,” “When You Wore a ,- Tulip,” “White Christmas,” and two unusual numbers, “Dumunary,” and “Mother Goose ; Story.” The sex¬ tette is composed of J Katherine Moran, Mery Jane ? They were chosen individually by Mr. Perry for their talent and capability to read music. They have been a credit to GHS. They have participated not only at dances, the Christmas Concert, the talent show, and assembly programs, but also in other outside social events. They did a fine job at the Senior Play including Patty Smead who substituted for Gay Sinclair. These girls, who have made life ' at GHS more pleasant and enjoyable, will be missed by everyone. JOSEPH BLAIR In accordance with a very popular G.H.S. tradition, the Junior Class successfully sponsored the 1953 version of the football dance. One of the school year s highlights, the Thanksgiving evening affair was largely at¬ tended and for most of us climaxed a perfect day. The turkey had been eaten and, much more important, we had witnessed the mighty Green Wave massacre arch-rival Turners halls. (Will we ever forget Bubba’s five touch¬ downs?) Bill Malloys orchestra played, entertainment was offered, and refreshments were available. The dance was certainly one to remember. Coached by RAYMOND SPENCER Defending Valley League Champions G.H.S.’s new track coach, Louis Clough, has a veteran team this year. We are hoping for another successful year. Back from the ’53 campaign are Capt. Putt McCain, Ed Lapinski, Ted Wilcox, Bubba Hayes, Gerry Emerald, Andy Calisewski, Ered Sachse, Paul O’Connell, and John Clapp. All of these boys are experienced and know their business. Most of last year’s point men are back. Mr. Clough will be able to add to the boys’ experience and knowledge. He hopes to have six official meets, including the New Hampshire State Champions, Keene. The first meet will be with Drury. A dual meet is planned with Westfield. Greenfield will defend The Valley League Crown as well as placing a strong bid for the Western Mass, title. Scrimmages are planned against U. M. Erosh and Deerfield Academy. Welcome to the G.H.S. coaching staff, Mr. Clough, and good luck in the coming years. Honestly, Putter, sometimes I wonder just what would have happened to you if we hadn’t decided to come here to Never- Ever Land. Judging from the way you always day dream and think about the old days, I often think you might have been just a plain loafer. Come on, boy, snap out of it.’’ P. P.: Must I? Golly, but those were the days! High school was just one big ball. Gay-Bell, will you quit your nagging? Didn’t we come here so that we could keep reliving by-gone days? We just couldn’t give up the good times in high school. There were work and worry, but there were great accomplishments, too.” G. B.: I guess for once I’ll have to go along with you. I’m going to keep recalling the wonderful parties, the thrills at the games, and all the priceless things I learned— ahem, not just from books cither. (Giggle) Oh, I’ll never forget that first day long ago when I walked through the high school front door and started a new life. I was really scared, for everything seemed so different and new.” P. P.: Yes, just like being transferred from Alcatraz to Leavenworth.” G. B.: Oh, nonsense! You certainly changed your mind after spending three years there.” P. P.: Now that you mention it, I really changed my mind as soon as I got ' hep’ to the way ' Daddy’ Watt wanted things done. ' Oh, Mein Pappa’!! Let’s see, it was way back in nineteen fifty-one. Yes, that’s right, because I can remember how surprised I was that our year turned out well under Petticoat Rule. Mary Jane Moran was certainly a fine female Veep.” You know the rumor that presidents are supposed to have their secretaries sit on their laps to take dictation? Well, I’ve always wondered if our cute Secretary ' Sandy’ O’Neil ever sat on President ' AE Hyman’s lap.” G. B.; Don’t forget ' Nicky’ McNicholas. Remember how little she was and the way she seemed to bounce everywhere she went? There was ' AE Hyman, too. He really started his high school political life with a bang! I think his being president all three years was a big factor in making our class the extra-special one it was.” P. P.: Speaking of being extra-special, what about the Sophomore dance we had? Wow!! If I recall correctly, everyone and his brother—or should I say sister—were there. ' Kay’ Moran really outdid herself in the supervision of decorating. The gymnasium really looked ' tops’!” G. B.: If I remember correctly, there was success whenever Katherine helped. How¬ ever, let’s get back to the dance. Remember the way everyone in the class put his whole heart and soul into making it a success? To me this was just one evidence of the fine class and school spirit we had on the ball field and in the stands when members of our class helped the high school win the Western Massachusetts Football Title. There were members of our class on the basketball, baseball, and tennis teams when Green¬ field won the title of Valley League Champions in all three sports.” P. P.; Indeed! As Sophomores we were really successful in sports. During football ' Bill’ Cokeley, ' Art’ Gleason, ' Tom’ Rice, and ' Bubba’ Hayes were lettermen. Also, how about the ' Sophomore Scrubeanies,’ who made their debut by scoring against Westfield? Oh, yes, and in basketball the ' J. V.’s,’ who, by the way, were all from our class, didn’t lose a game all season. Also, let’s not forget ' Fred’ Winseck’s perfect shots. No wonder he played on the varsity squad his first year in high school. ' Fred ' and ' Al’ Hyman played with the varsity team in baseball. I’d say our class really outdid itself in sports during nineteen fifty-one and two.’’ G. B.; Yes, Sir, our class rather outdid itself in about every field. Why, I can distinctly remember L. C. Cox saying, ' Yes, Gay, your class was outstanding not only- in spirit but also in academic rating.’ Boy! that’s something when a teacher even com¬ mends a class. Oh, Putter, is it any wonder we came to Never-Ever Land? Why, I wouldn’t have grown up and drifted away from those wonderful Senior High days for anything.’’ P. P.: Remember Junior Year? That was wonderful! I guess I spent my best Thanksgiving that year. First, I helped the football team ' cream’ those Turners Indians to the tune of twenty-seven, seven. That night I went to the big Victory Dance our class sponsored.’’ G. B.; Oh, Putter, do you ever remember how many people we had at the dance and how beautiful the gymnasium looked?” P. P.: The entertainment is what I remember. Those six Juniors who sang under the misleading name of Sextette were quite something.” G. B.; Just what do you mean by that, Mr. Pan? Remember, I was a part of the Sextette.” P. P.: I ain ' t no ' Stooley’.” G. B.: Okay for you, but didn’t something else important happen in Junior Year? Oh, I remember! It was the Washington-New York trip. So many of our classmates went with Miss Rose, Miss Curtis, and Mr. Georgerian.” P. P.: How could I forget? All I heard for two months from the travelers was what life was like in the big city.” (Suddenly he springs up.) G. B.: For heavens sake! What’s the matter? Did you have a brainstorm or some¬ thing else just as disastrous?” P. P.; Petticoat Rule—out the window—hurrah! I’d say we had some pretty fine- officers in fifty-three. Let’s see, there was ' AF Hyman, President; ’Bill’ Cokeley, Sec¬ retary; ' Blip’ Smead, Treasurer, and (scratching his head) who was the other one?” G. B.: What an act, as if you didn t remember! Well, I’ll have to admit you did do a rather splendid job as Vice President. Of course, you’ll have to take into consider¬ ation that there was nothing to do.” P. P.; All right, enough of that. Miss. To change the subject, do you remember how proud we all were when ' AT Hyman was elected Vice President of all the Student Councils in Massachusetts?” G. B.: I should say I do remember! There couldn’t have been a better choice. Oh, I utter, do you recall what we were say ing about the Sextette singing at the Junior Dance? Well, you know, that started me a-thinkin’.” P. P.; Oh, I thought I smelled something burning.” G. B.: Now can’t you be serious for once? What I’m thinking is that Miss Congdon started our Sextette, and so she must have come to G.H.S. for our Junior Year. I don’t think I’ll ever know anyone who could accomplish so much in so little time.’’ P. P.: That’s right. She really started the ball rolling in dramatics and music! (He dozes off dreamily) Let’s see, there wasn’t anything else in Junior Year, was there? G. B.; Why, ’Dopey,’ you forgot all about the sports in fifty-three.’’. P. P.: Ho-hum, not too dumb! After ' Pretty-Boy Ed’ Lapinski, Fred ' Blond Bomb¬ shell’ Winseck, and ' Modest Ray’ Tetreault, all helping the team to win the Valley League Title in basketball, I surely should have remembered. G. B.: I know I don’t remember very much about sports, but wasn’t that the year that Fred was chosen for the All-Western Massachusetts basketball team?” P. P.: Very fine; very fine! But there’s something you’ve forgotten. Track was revived during our Junior year. If my memory serves me, ' Larry ' Jubb, ' Dave’ Mowry, and ’Paul’ Bowe all did their part in helping the team win the Valley League Title. There is another little item. When spring football practice began, ' Bill’ Cokeley, ' Beansey’ Baldwin, and ' Art’ Gleaso n came ' down to earth’ again. G. B.: Weren’t they chosen to be on the All-County Football Team? Well, I think we’ve talked enough about the sports end of things. Once you get started on that subject, nobody can stop you. How about the times we had during Junior year? Lola Ahearn and Mr. Hubbard had quite a feud!” P. P.: Ha ha, ho ho. (He laughs hysterically.) G. B.: What struck you, anyway?” P. P.: Oh-ho, ho! Remember ' Mo’ Touher and the razzing she took after she broke her leg while she was starting out on the Mother’s Day Drive? The funny thing was that ' Peg-Leg’ wasn’t even a mother. G. B.: I can still picture the shocked look that came over ' Butch’ Day’s face after he broke a window in Mr. Hubbard’s room. ' Butch’s’ class must have been having quite a party. P. P.: We certainly had some great times in Sophomore and Junior years, but Senior year topped everything. To say the least, being a Senior was the most marvelous thing that ever happened to me. We were ' Wheels at last! G. B.: ' Speak for yourself, John.’ After all, we were just grown-up Sophomores. P. P.; Are you trying to tell me it was grown-up Sophomores who made our Senior Play such a success? We certainly had some hidden talent in ' Bashful Dave’ Roberts and ' Blushing Dave’ Kelly. G. B.: I’ll never forget the lessons we had to give ' Lon’ and ' Candy’ in the back hall. I couldn’t figure out whether ' Denny Cuddles’ Morrissey wouldn’t cooperate or whether David had a little trouble because he kept remembering a certain person named ' Spike’! P. P.: Did you and ' Dave’ Kelly act as teachers? The climax of the Saturday production surely made Cordelia and John Todd look like professionals. G B.: That’s enough of that kind of talk. I can remember how pleased the cast was after having so much fun, doing so much work during practices, and then having the play turn out swell. I imagine ' Flip’ Smead, class treasurer, was very pleased because of the six hundred and one dollars and thirty-one cents profit. d P. P.: Now, ' Kiddy, ' let’s get down to another important thing about the Senior Play—Britton’s celebration afterward. (Sheepish grin) G. B.: Hold your horses, old boy, for I haven’t finished! P. P.: ’Sense me for breathing. I should have known better than to interrupt a woman. G. B.: All right, then, for heaven’s sake, we can’t forget Miss Congdon. ' Why, ' Strange Boarders’ owes its success to the aid given by the G.H.S. Librarian. Lo)ig Silence P. P.; (Whispers softly) Okay now? —(Eagerly continuing) Now let’s think about that party! Well, I guess. It was really ' tops’! There were no neighbors for miles around. Of course, we were quiet anyway. (Chuckles evilly.) Boy, I’d swear that whole house rocked with ' Heart of My Heart.’ Everybody, and I do mean everybody, was singing. If you don’t believe me, you should ask Mr. Britton. G. B.; Didn’t you think it was nice the way everyone came to know each other? P. P.; How? The way was what intrigued me. As I remember, you didn’t do so badly yourself! What was the rumor about the ' lovely leading lady being all wrapped up in something?’ It’s a cinch it wasn’t your dreams. G. B.: Now let’s not get personal. What was it you were called? ' Casanova’ McCain? Oh-ho, that was it. P. P.; What do you mean? I was just doing my duty. Fun? Indeed! How about ' Shirley Burly’ Truchon? She seemed to grow up in the first half hour of the party.” G. B.: As I recall, she got along famously with that handsome male from Dart¬ mouth. Also, what about the couple in the corner that were ' obeying impulses’ right and left?” P. P.: Which corner? Oh, and which couple? Remember Carol ' Bom Bom’ Bomely? She proved to be quite a song leader.” G. B.; I’ll never forget ' Romeo’ Baldwin. He certainly made the rounds more than once. P. P.: You know, I don’t think we would remember this party half so well if the aftermaths hadn’t been so great. Everyone seemed so much more friendly after the party. G. B.; Yes, Putter, I was thinking the same thing. All the Seniors were more unified after ' the night .” P. P.: Well, I guess that finishes our recollections of Senior Play and party. However, in another way neither of us can finish them. The reason is that these two events were too perfect to forget. (Change of mood takes place.) Hey, how about sports in Senior year? (Sarcastically) I don’t suppose you remember that ' Bubba’ Hayes was chosen for the Western Massachusetts Football Team, do you?” G. B.: ' Dopey,’ of course I do. In fact, there is something you plumb forgot. ' Artie’ Gleason made a fast guard on that second team. P. P.: Atta girl. Guess I did slip on that. If I rightly remember, ' Mush’ Mushovic, Barry ' Hale, and ' Buster’ Davenport all did their share in helping to win the Valley League Football Trophy in fifty-four. Also, in basketball Fred Winseck, ’Ed’ Lapinski, ■Ray’ Tctreault, and ' Lenny’ Blodgett did their part in helping the Greenfield High Basketball Team to play in the Semi-Finals at the Springfield Tournament. Our boys played superbly in their Senior year.” G. B.: You know, we’ve been side-stepping the other side of sports?” P. P.: Pardon me, Madame. Just what is this other side of sports?” G. B.: The girls’ sports, ' Nucklehead!’ ' Nance’ Dame nearly ' had a bird’ when her Junior team won Intramurals in fifty-three. Something else I always recollect is the way ' Pris’ Cobb used to slug the softball. Boy, never did I see such a girl ball¬ player.” P. P.: I guess Mary Jane Moran took the cake for an all-round athlete. (Twinkles his eye) She really knew her plays.’’ G. B.: Putter, don’t you think the Seniors were lucky to have such fine officers as ' AT Hyman, Marcia Britton, David Kelly, and Phillip Smead in their last high school year?’’ P. P.: Another thing in which we were lucky was to have such spirited Co-Captain Cheerleaders. Sheila Scott and ' Nicky’ McNicholas rounded out a rip-roaring cheering squad to goad our boys to victory.” G. B.: Did ' Andy’ Calisewski ever tell you of the honor the teachers bestowed on him and Pauline Togneri? These two were chosen from all the Commercial students to go to view the modern procedures and machines used in factories and offices in Springfield. I’d say they both should be pretty proud of their being selected.” P. P.: I should say so. That ' Andy’ didn’t even tell me about his trip.” G. B.: Putter, do you think we’ll ever forget our final graduation exercises? Dr. Gilkey surely was the perfect man to speak at graduation. His speech gave everyone in the class something to think about after each had received his diploma and gone into his next step in life.” P. P.; That’s right, Gay-Bell.
