JOY ROSE Counselor, Class of 1945 VVe, the Class of 1945, wish to extend our gratitude to you, Miss Rose, for your wise guidance given us throughout our high school years. VVe entered here in a world at war, yet we had hope of graduating into one of peace. Torn between vocational and educational desires and the demands of war, we have been confronted with many probleins. Because we found your counseling a source of strength and hope, we turned to you in times of need. Individual, group, and class difiieulties have always been met with your sage, quiet decisions. Only leadership such as yours could bring our high school career to a close with confidence in the future. .21. Enwrxim JAM1-is FLYNN . 63 . fi 4 7 XJ Small Tool Industries of' Greenfield REENFIELD, the home of taps and dies, is the town that produces more small tools annually than any other town or city in the world. I hope, therefore, to give you a few facts to show how these industries developed. The events surrounding the inception and growth of the Greenfield Tap and Die form a most interesting history. In October 24, 1871, John J. Grant invented and patented a new device while he was living in Northampton, Massachusetts. Mr. Grant lJ1'OI1gl1t his new invention to Green- field, where he started to manufacture his new, improved form of die in a little shack of what is now the B. B. Noyes factory on Hope Street. In brief, a die is a tool for cutting exterior threads on a screw, a bolt, rod or pipe. A tap produces the interior threads in the metal, on the walls of the holes. In April of 1872, Solon I.. Wiley and Charles P. Russell became associated with Mr. Grant for the manufacture of tools under his patent. They took the firm name of Wiley and Russell. The business was then removed to the old cutlery shop on the west bank of the Green River, where the present Wiley and Russell plant now stands. In 1875, John J. Grant left Wiley and Russell to go to Hartford, where he established the tap and die branch of the Pratt and VVhitney Manu- facturing Company. Realizing the possibilities there were in com- bining the interests of the various tap and die in- dustries in Greenfield, Mr. Frank O. VVells and Frederick H. Payne brought about in 1912 the organization of tl1e Greenfield Tap and Die Corporation, a consolidation of VVells Brothers Company and the VViley and Russell Manufac- turing Company. In 1918 the equipment of the Lincoln Twist Drill Company of Taunton, Massachusetts, was purchased and moved to Greenfield. Also the J. M. Carpenter Tap and Die Company, originally in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was purchased and moved to Detroit, where it is now used for the manufacture of special taps and dies for that territory. Also, in 1937, the Russell Manufactur- .66. ing Company, off Carpenterls Lane in Greenfield, liquidated the company and sold its building and real estate. However, the founders of the Greenfield Tap and Die were not the only industrialists who were aware of the need of new tools in a machine age. As this was the period of the industrial revolu- tion, far-sighted men could see the paramount part that machinery would play in the future. From an unpretentious beginning, two Yankees started a clothes-wringer shop on a Greenfield pond bank. From that humble beginning mate- rialized the Millers Falls Tool Company, today makers of tools used by craftsmen all over the world. About the time ofthe Civil War, the two above- mentioned men in the Greenfield Tool Company decided what the world needed was more and better clothes-wringers. On the bank of North Parish Pond, where Cherry Rum brook winds westward toward Green River, these two men, Levi J. Gunn and Charles Amidon, erected a tiny plant. Their capital was small, and the partners prospered briefly. Then Cherry Rum brook ran dry and with it the trickle of clothes-wringer orders. Gunn stored the f1I'll1lS stock in his barn and returned to the silent mill to ponder with his partner their future, but fate had already decided this. In those days, when insurance was unpopu- lar, the barn with all the wringers burned to the ground. But down from VVindsor, Vermont, had come a VVilliam Barber, and the idea he brought gave the partners courage. The wooden bit braces that carpenters used wore out. So these three men, Gunn, Amidon, and Barber, went to work and started making bit braces of iron with a bulge in the sweep as a handle. Eighteen braces was a good day's output at first, but production increased to many times that amount before fire destroyed the North Parish mill. Gunn and Amidon resumed business in a section of the Greenfield Tool Company, but flames again consumed the firm's holdings. This did not stop them, for the irresistible partners moved to Grout's Corner. on the Millers River in fi 1 P the present town of Millers Falls. This move to Grout's Corner was made in 1868, and the eom- pany was ineorporated as the Millers Falls Manu- facturing Company, eontinuing under that name until 1872, when it merged with the Baekus Vise Company of VVindsor, Vermont, as the Millers Falls Company. The power saw, used today in every eountry in the world, stemmed from an idea Pratt had in 1890. arrangement of a erankshaft in a lathe and haek saw frame on an arm gave inventors their design for a power saw. In 1931 the general offiee of the eompany was moved from the plant on the Erving side of the river to the Wells Street plant in Greenfield, aequired by the merger with Goodell-Pratt. The present merger retains the Goodell-Pratt name on many brands for whieh that eoneern had built up a wide trade. The present war has eontrolled mueh of the eom- pany's tool export, but business has inereased greatly due to national defense. The future of these eompanies worries no one, heeause the pluek and ingenuity of the founders J ol' these two firms have eharaeterized those who have sinee direeted the destinies of the eoneerns. Those qualities are ageless. 1Yell might the eit- izens of Greenfield be proud of the work ofthe past generations that have blazed the wav for loeal industrial progress. But all eredit is not due to the past, the present has its laurels also. The Greenfield Tap and Die and the Millers Falls Tool Company can look with great pride to their part in the present war effort. In the manufacture of maehines, guns, tanks, jeeps, bombers, fighters, and all sueh war needs, taps, dies, gages, and tools are indispensable. To most of us a tap or a die or a gage is just a small tool that one reads about. but aetually it is a deadly weapon. These small tools, manufaetured in Greenfield, are keeping our l attle fronts on the enemyls home ground. The development of the Greenfield Tap and Die and the Millers Falls Tool Company is a constant inspiration to the graduating elass of 1945, and we know that we are to be ineluded in the future plans of these two eorporations. ALFR1cn .losizen P.xQL'r:'1 1'i4: Ws.!.!i glglmlifsiag .67 r 4 ? 1 Cultural Aspects of Greenfield I'LTURFIfthis is quite a high-sounding word. It quite naturally suggests to the ordinary individual huge art collections, expensive books, very ornately-costumed operas, and all the trappings of a rich aristocracy. The shop-worker looks up to the white collar man and says to himself, He has culture, but I have not. This same office-worker looks at his cm- ployer and tells himself that to have culture one must. be owner of some large business concern. The business man, in turn, looks up the ladder to the president of some large corporation and says, He is a cultured individualf' Thus it goes - al- ways the person looking to his immediate superior and considering him a cultured individual. This should not be so-. Every person has culture, and, since people make up a town, every town has its culture also. When I was given this subject, I laughed to myself with all the confidence and knowledge of youth and said, 'fGreenfield has no culture. I was making the very same mistake that a great many of you may have made- making the decision that there was no eulture in Greenfield. A definition of culture may be in order at this time. Webster says that culture is the training or rehning of the moral or intellectual faculties. This is again an extremely lofty terminology. Why couldn't old Noah just as easily have said that culture is appreciation of the finer things in life? That's what it is- this culture -the music people share, the art they themselves pro- duce, the lectures they attend, the churches in which they worship, and the schools which their children attend. Of course these things are exist- ent in Greenfield, and I shall attempt to give a few examples of them to you. Music is a branch of culture which is shared by cm-by one, Many races have contributed to the great store of music which ours forthe listening. The Pioneer Valley Symphony is known to many of you. In it those who are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy music through the playing of it furnish enjoyment for those who can but listen. .72. This community institution is as surely cultural as the Boston Pops Symphony. Painting is another means of self-expression of the refining of intellectual faculties which is mentioned in the dictionary. Although every one cannot paint, there are very few people who can- not appreciate paintings. In Greenfield there exists an organization known as the Pioneer Valley Arts Associationl' for the furthering of painting in our community. From time to time exhibits are held, that the general public may share the products of the talents of others. At times other local artists display their works in store windows along Main Street. There is nothing high-class or exclusive about this thing called eultureg rather it is an intangible object which is shared by all the people of our community. Another phase of culture which is within the reach of all is the custom of public lectures. Through these lectures men of science, art. litera- ture, and religion spread the fruits of their intel- leets to the public. In more recent years lectures have been becoming more prominent as a form of entertainment after a decline. The war has given many more men and women opportunity to travel, and many of these people have made it a practice to share their experiences with the people of our community through lectures. The efforts of the service clubs of Greenfield, as well as the work on the part of the educational organizations, have brought to Greenfield many outstanding lecturers. The churches of Greenfield are naturally strong supporters of culture. In addition to providing means of worship for all, the various churches have organizations which further the moral and cultural interests of the people. By working together as well as functioning as individuals, the united churches have brought programs such as the University of Life to the united congregations. Also, during the recent Iicnten season, the churches have again united to present union services for the observance of the period, and in these services have been made available to the people of Green- field numerous opportunities to enjoy religious fi 4 7 services of the highest form as well as the tradi- tional lCaster music. Tlms, during special seasons as well as through the rest of the year, the churches of Greenfield offer their respective con- gregations high religious, moral, and cultural training. The Public Library offers the best of the litera- ture of the world to the townspeople. In this institution are found, in addition to the literature of the linglish-speaking nations, the works of Polish, French, and other foreign authors whose books are printed in their native tongues. For the student of the culture of other nations as well as for the American representatives of these nations, these volumes are of intrinsic value. Through this institution, culture in one of its many forms is brought home to the people of Greenfield. In all of these examples of culture which I have thus far presented, it is the older citizens with whom l have been primarily concerned. It must not be thought that we younger citizens have been neglected. No, it is quite the contrary. In our school life we have been given opportunity not only to get an education but also to acquire some of this thing culture, There are art classes in which students who are gifted in this form of culture can express themselves through sculpture or painting, there are foreign language courses in which students learn much of the culture of other nations, there are music appreciation groups which gather to enjoy music, and last, but definitely not least, there are the music organizations them- selves, which allow musically inclined students to play instruments both for their own enjoyment and for the enjoyment of others. In school, too, there is the library, to which the students can go for relaxation as well as for the X1 .73. gaining of knowledge. Our library is a small edition of the one downtown and includes most of the same opportunities for the acquisition of culture through enlightenment and .mental training. After high school, then what? Our students Hnd themselves ideally located in regard to other educational institutions. For courses which are the equivalent of those taught here, our town is situated nearly in the center of a ring of such schools - Deerfield Academy and Mount Hermon for the boys, and Northfield Seminary and Stone- leigh-Prospect School for the girls. For courses of beyond-high-school caliber, we are well situated for the various colleges. These include Amherst, Massachusetts State, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Williams. In connection with the pursuance of a college course, a student need not find himself handi- capped by lack of funds. There exists in Green- Held an institution known as the Warner Fund, and, through this, a boy or girl can obtain finan- cial aid for a college career. This fund is a splen- did illustration of the interest of some of the citizens of Greenfield in the gaining of education and culture on the part of those young people who desire it. Thus, through these various examples I have attempted to impress upon your minds that cul- ture is a thing to be enjoyed and shared by all. I hope that I have shown that Greenfield is quite well supplied with the conditions necessary to both the existence of culture and the successful continuance of it. I think that. in spite of the war, the generations which are now growing up in Greenfield are very well equipped with oppor- tunities to become happy, cultured citizens of the America of tomorow. There were Bill Kells, Roy'l I3CI1j2lI11III, Tl1o111as Perry, anrl .Iohn Harris. I can 1'QI11C11IlJGI' l1ow crazy the HTIIIIIJH usecl to get when Bill Kells kept forgetting his plays. .76. But that's e11o11gl1 about football. I,et's see. Who was 01111 president that year? Let 111e tl1ink. Oh, yes. Bob Davey earriecl 11s tl1I'0llgl1 o11r SOI7lIUHIOI'0 year. Certainly I Arthur Gaines was viee-preside11tg Ken Cook, treasurer, anrl Betty Cairns, seeretary. Tl1ey were certainly a graiicl exeeutive bofly. Along about tl1is time 0211110 our first Mid- Years. Yes, anrl, after those, our elass hall its first opportunity to show its ability. What was that? iYhy, tl1e POSt-ICXZIIH Iianee sponsoretl by o11r elass. Uh. to he sure. We eertainly got off to a swell start. IJirl11't we? Yes, I wisl1 the basketball ltlillll eoulcl have had so111e of that sueeess. That's right. We tlirln't rlo so well that year. Were there any sophomores on tl1e teani? I,et 111e see. They Ollgllf to be nientionerl i11 o11e of these olfl UEXIIUIIPIIISH Oh, yes, Norinan Hallowell and Sain Shihilo were tl1e only two. IYell, tl1ey were out ll1Cl'C trying, anrl that's what eounts. Say, flo yo11 FCIIICIIIIJCI' tl1e Vietory Corps? Yes. I 1'01llCI11bCl' how sueeessful it was, but what happened to it? I Clon't k11ow. Oh, yes, we elirl have quite a few I1lf'IlIlJC1'S of Olll' elass on that teani. Certainly. Ken Cook, Bill Kells, Sam Shibilo played, and Art'l Gaines was manager. Then CIIIIIC finals and our SIIIIIIIICI' vaeatio11. 'Phat entlecl with a bang Ulll' first year i11 G.H.S. We started off as juniors by winning the eheering eup. This victory rather niacle up fX f b for our losing the traek meet.. Yes, to win eertainly required some yelling, too. IYe had a rather wet traek meet though. Yes, we eertainly did. I also reeall the Sophomore Reeeption we sponsored our junior year. That was some fun weleoming the plebes to G.H.S. It seems sueh a short time sinee I used to wateh the fellows on the football field - and, yet, ten years have passed sinee then. That reminds me of a speeial event that took plaee baek in '44. t'I7mp Niehols eelebrated his twenty-fifth year as a eoaeh at G.H.S. Remember the flashy ring ,he sported? Yes, and, speaking of football, I remember our Turkey Day game, which was played in foreign territory. It was a tie game, but we saw some wonderful playing. l hope to be baek home and on hand for this year's Turkey game, too, if my plans work out. I wonder what our junior elass oliieers are doing now. Do you remember who tl1ey were? Yes, I know he-man Eddie Glatkowski was our elass president then, and tl1is Exponent'l shows that Dave Mann was treasurer. Yes, lion Vineent, our famous skiing man, was viee-president of the elass. Fay IYalker, our only girl offieer, was secretary. W'e fellows had the edge on you girls that year. Certainly, but we had a ehanee to take the fellows las far as they wentl to the Leap Year llanee. Do you remember that? Yes, I remember seeing the girls shyly eorner- ing tl1e boys to make sure of partners. You never eould tell what we were likely to think up to provide atmosphere for a dance. You're right. That was proved by the Hay- seed Hop we gave that year. That was one of the times we eould don our farmer and farmerette elothes and go to townfl Even t'The Voit-e was there dressed in typieal farm elothes -- overalls. Well, let's get into the senior year, for it is getting late. We started off well by winning the eheering eup at the fair for the third eonseeutive year. XJ .77. And we made a pretty good showing at the traek meet, too. Yes, Handsome Eddie Flynn was our pilot the last year we spent in G.H.S. He and Ann Erisman made a good pair of leaders. The situation was reversed that year, beeause 'tI,il Sullivan, as treasurer, and 'tl-'ep IYasher, as seeretary, made it 3 to 1 in the girls' favor. llo you remember the Thanksgiving Day game that year? I eertainly do. The boys went out to win that game at all costs, and they did it to the amazement of most Turners Falls people. Yes, and even many Greenfield people, too. The elass really rewarded the team that year with the best Football llanee ever. Say, do you remember our Senior Play? Of eourse. I,et's see. Norman Hallowell, I,ydia Seott, and Rita Kramer shared the leading roles. They were supported by a wonderful east whieh helped to make the play sneh a sueeess. The lllllSlC'2ll show that year brought a boy erooner to light. I remember when Ken Cook and Claire Holmes sang a duet. and how swell it was! l remember that show very well. Ken was really good, too. The rest of the year was spent in preparation for graduation. Yes, .Ianiee Britton was Editor of the Year- book. She had a good working staff, too. Who were the Class-day speakers? Mae Mann, Ann Erisman, Alfred Paquette, Ric-hard Jones, and Edward Chase. They did a splendid pieee of work. If I remember eorreetly, Mae Mann also wrote the Class Song. Yes, and .Ioann Kennedy and Lillian Fall wrote the Ivy Ode, Illl never forget the propheey written by .lane Loomis and Bob Davey. No, and I'll never forget walking out of the auditorium Graduation night. lmust eonfess that I was sorry to leave. Yes, I felt the same way. There has been an opportunity for students to meet and discuss paramount issues of the world today. Our first forum leader, Mr. Paul Pirmov, spoke about Russia and our relations with her. llr. Marie Clutoska from Massachusetts State College told of l1er native Poland with its great past and hopeful future. At another forum the students were given the opportunity of meeting Mr. John Heselton, our newly elected congressman. He reviewed the duties of a district attorney and led a discussion on problems facing the new congress. To tie in with the study of Latin America, five motion pictures were shown. They covered South America's industries, the importance of grain, the life of the common people, and the hopes for the future of our good neighbors. Mr. Hubert Kregeloh, a radio news commentator, spoke on the value of educa- tion for a peaceful world and led a discussion on current topics of interest. Dr. Grover C. Bowman of North Adams State Teachers College conducted a forum about the Dumbarton Oaks Plan. This has been a brief review of the highlights of our history forums for the year. May they continue to bring value to others in the future. ar Savings Stamps Program The VVar Savings Stamps Program started in the high school under the supervision of the Student Council on February 17, 1942.
