From the Launchung Platform of Today s Leaders It one recognuzes the buuldung puctured below as hus Alma Mater ut means he attended Greenheld Hugh School pruor to 1926 Servung the educatuonal system ot Greenheld sunce the 1890s the buuldung has played several dutterent roles Servung t1rst as a senuor hugh school the school next served both as a sennor hugh school and a uunuor hugh school from 1895 to 1926 except for a peruod of sux years 1918 1925 when the seventh and eughth grades attended the old Washungton Buuldung Ruley School at the present tume houses the turst sux grades and also the seventh whuch was moved trom the present hugh school buuldung to ease the crowded sutuatuon whuch exusted there Xu fs? The students ot Ruley Hugh were very actuve un scholastuc and athletuc attaurs Numerous clubs and organuzatuonstunctuoned well A unuque actuvuty ot one club the Latun Club was the publucatuon ot a Latun newspaper Durung the mud twentues Charles Gates was busy umutatung Demosthenes and Keuth Elsbury was takung every hrst place un agruculture contests Other actuve clubs whuch are not tound at the present hugh school were an art club and drama club Greentueld proved to be strong un athletucs un the years Ruley Hugh School exusted Wunnung the sectuonals of 1925 and 1926 the basketball teams proved heur worth It us unterestung to note the development ot basketball un Greentueld Hugh The courts were outsude at tlrst By 1921 the court was over a grocery store The Ivtemorual Buuldung served tor tuve years as a gymnasuum Players such as Nug Woods of Bulter tame Charley Whutesell ot Mussouru and Humpy Darnell ot Purdue got theur start on these courts Greentueld also possessed a tune football team un 1918 when ut was one ot the two best un the state Other tune football teams ot Ruley Hugh were un 1921 and 1925 In 1925 the team was undefeated Baseball and track also drew much attentuon at Ruley Hugh un these years ot outstandung athletuc teams Around us today we stull see these people who attended Ruley Hugh School, not as scholars or athletes, but as tune cutuzens of our commun uty They are truly performung well as our leaders of today
