As you look through it, you will see our citizens at work and play, our athletes in action, our musical departments, our government, our cluhs and organizations, and most everything else that you might find in a small town. You will read of the plans, hopes, and aspirations of our leading citizensg all this and more. We sincerely hope you enjoy your tour. You will notice how the subject, Our School Town, at the top of this page, is completed periodically by sentences in page headings throughout the hook in each different topic. Wehave tried to show how our school is similar in many respects to the town in which we live. Al- though we may be slightly prejudiced, we think you will find this the best Cama- raderie yet. 'i.. j. f y X a .F .F THE y SENIOR sfroav 5 Wrepared by Bl-JVERLY RICHMONDJ The parents of our town were having a most trying time that .fateful day of Friday, September 8, l94-4, as they were attempting to get their children off for their first day of school. There was a variety of emotions experienced by both the parents and the beginners. Miss Reed and Miss Thomas it Mrs. Smithl had the task of helping us made our adjustment to school life. Forty- one of those first-graders are still with us. They are Barbara Thomas, Barbara Brooks, Lewis Glentzer, Mary Ann Sisson, Elsie Leary, Dorothy Dennison, Gloria Bradford, janet Hayes, Sandra Hiday, Nicole Chandler, June Rolfbins, Patricia Campbell, Greta Himelick, Ronna Smitherman, Shirley Clark, JO Ann johnson, Carolyn Andis, Norman Shelby, Ruth Ann Martin, Barbara Sisson, Elise Williams, Beverly Richmond, Larry Sullivan, Charles Shelby, . , Rex White, Larry Jessup, Mary Ellen Richmond, Carthel Graddy, Harold Webb, t:'4lIY,, .4 Sonja Cox, Anthony Onstott, Lucinda Blackburn, Dale Ruggles, Karen Fisk, jg1w,,,':.:'o9 Margaret Gibbs, Jerry Moses, William Jackson, Ralph Olvey, George Cowan, 074:f, ',f:-c Richard Hunt, and Charles Grigsby. Q J: 'e By the time the second year of school rolled around we had become accus- tomed to school life. Patricia Rafferty, Verinda Ratliff, and ,Ian Bell moved qx 'fo Greenfield and became students of ou'r school. Miss Herbig and Miss Kinsley lv jr 'ef ff taught us how to write that year. A A Among our activities in the third grade was the making of posters tsuper- vised by Mrs. Lacy and Mrs. Binfordl for the annual P. T. A. carnival. Robert Bentley and Richard Holden became citizens of our town and students of our school. While in the fourth grade, Mrs. Marts and Mrs. Lgowe introduced us to Geography. Mrs. Lowe's students remember her reading The Secret Garden during our recess period in the winter months. Terry Beagle joined us. that year. ' In our fifth and sixth grade of school we were introduced to The procedure of going from room to room for our different classes. Miss Richman, principal, Miss Greer, Mrs. Reeves, Mrs., Dieter, Miss Curry, and Mrs. Floyd were our teachers. Mr. Roclocker replaced Mrs. Floyd, who retired because of illness, in the sixth grade. History and Science were added to our curriculum. Many of us will never forget the preparation and the presenting of the program by the grade school on the Court House lawn celebrating the Centennial Observ- ance of James Whitcomb Riley, the famous Hoosier Poet,,.,who was born in Greenfield. , Movies were shown periodically in grade school. Heida was a favorite film shown. Some students brought their hobbies to school and exhibited them in the halls. We lost Larry Jessup in the fifth grade, but he rejoined us in high school. Betty Widvey and Gary Moss became citizens of Greenfield and students of our grade school this year. ' --Q 52 Although ha 'ng been introduced to the system of going from room to room for our classes while in Departmental i .de school, we were still a very confus d group our first day at the high school build- ing., George Earbey, Bill Beck, Bill Spicer, and Hugh Cope and joined us this year. We recall in thinking ,about our seventh and eighth years of school a particular a ithmetic teacher known 'for his humorous pun- ishme fdf the students' mischievousness such as spanking one's self with a yardstick, standing in the waste paper and putting one's.-head unider the desk and saying, I am a bad girli' ten times for not getting the lesson. Teksa Haste, Ellen New, and Nancy Van Demark became members of the eighth grade class. In our freshman year we were beginning to lay the foundation for our future. We began to get a gegggalized picture of what was ahead. We were given curriculum sheets to help us choose the courses we would be taking. Some of.-.us joined the clubs and organizations of our school to further our knowl- edge and interests of school life. All of our new experiences weren't pleasant, though, as many students will attest who ,suffered the horrors of Biology class. One day in Biology class, just to liven things up a little, a student chewed tobacco because it was strictly forbidden to chew gum. Alberta Whiteside, Mary -' ' g8Ilf6llBl'BJldi Etter, Kay Sims, Sharon Crider, Sue Van Metre, and David Gardner shared our new wpqierhnceslwkjth us. We startedt our sophomore year by electing our class officers. Elise Williams was elected president of our class, Tony Onstott, vice-president, and Terry Beagle, secretary-treasurer of our class. This year some of us were eligible to take Driver's Training, a course offered to high school students so that they will' learn safe-driving -rules and habits of Sur town. Larry Jessup rejoined us after having moved away in the fifth grade. . 1 We were 'kept busy in our junior year with the presentation of the junior play, Cirl Shy, preparation forthe junior prom,..and the ordering of class rings. We worked hard decorating the gymnasimn for the I prom. Some of those students that worked industriously on the decorations were Larry Baker, Bill Spicerf Shirley Clark, Rex White, David Gardner, Patricia Rafferty, Barbara Thomas, Bud Cowan, Janet Hayes, and Karen Fisk. Our themer was Underwater. The 'ceilings and sides of the gymnasium were in different shades of green, paper fish were hanging everywhere, and the grandstand ,was in the form of a fish. The prom wasn't without its humorous occurrences. An out-of-towner got his-,nose painted blue so that he wouldn't clash with the decorations. The dance was sponsored by the parents and entertainment was pro- vided by the American Legion. After the prom we had dinner at the Shelter House and then went to an all-night 'dance held at the Auiriliary Hgrne. One of our duties was the selling cf concessions at the bas- ketball and football games. The shop Elass made new concession stands to be used at the games. We bought a new popcorn machine and presented it to the school for the use of the succeeding junior classes. Nancy Tull came here this year. Chemistry students delighted -in causing unpleasant aromas in the high school. Now we are! in our senior year and our foundation of the fundamentals is now nearly complete. We enjoyed preparing for and presenting our senior play, Seventeen is Terrific, and going tothe senior prom. This year it was decided for us that the prom would be for juniors and seniors only. We had our pictures taken for the yearbook, ordered senior cards, and were measured for caps and gowns. N We decided on two shades of blue for our senior colors. The yearbook staff was given ari office in what was originally a s rage closet, Room 302. .The office enabled the staff to have a place for keeping records and equip- m permainently. A bulletin board in the yearbook office was used to'keep the staff members informed on their assignments. A new senior course, Family Relations, was added to the curniculum this year. Open House was held so that the parents and citizens of our town could see the classes in, session and become acquainted with the school. We 'chose our class officers: Paul Easton, presidentg David Gardner, vice- presideptg Janet Hayes, secretary, and Dorothy Dennisonytreasurer. Our graduating class was made com- , plete by the argival of Nancy Crawford and Paul Easton. Almost, before we knew it, gI'8dWti0H had crept up on us. But, graduation is onlya step further up the ladder to help one achieve successf Some of us will be taking part immediately in community life. For otherg. there will be colleges and u 'versities of higher learning. No matter what we plan to do our education will never be at'a standstill ilflhwe hope to gfow with OUR TOWN and our country.
