Dedication We, the annual staff, are proud to dedicate the 1956 Greene and White to Paul C. Olson, ln the past four years, he has guided our football, basketball, and baseball teams through many successful seasons. He has been equally successful as a teacher in the social studies department of our schooL During his stay at Greene, Mr. Olson has proved himself a hard worker at anything he has been called on to do. For these and many other reasons the annual staff is glad to join with the rest of the community in wishing Ole the best of luck in his new job at Decorah. i Fill' BACK ROW: C. Foster, B. Mead, D. The Battle of the Budget was presented by the eighth grade. In it three teen-agers sought to get larger allowances from their father. Sweet talk, clowning, and tears got nowhere but in the end the children received an increase. On the same night the seventh grade presented Tom Sawyer Wins Out. As usual Tom caused havoc with the aid of Huck Finn. After getting sick while giving an important speech las the result of smokingl and almost getting a spanking from Aunt Polly for it, Tom sends everyone into gales of laughter by having Huck Finn pull the teacher's wig off. The Whole Truth , a three act comedy, was presented by the Junior Class on November ll, 1955. The family and servants promised to tell nothing but the truth, this brings about many complicated results. Dr. Fersig . . Elaine . . . Mrs. Embry. Bobby . . . Kinks . . . Anne . . . Bill .... Clarice Stephenson Home Economics Engn n BASIC SKILLS COMPOSITION LITERATURE SPEECH The four phases emphasized in English 9 and 10 are READING, WRITING, SPEAKING, and LISTENING, The skill of READING is carried out by means of the literature books containing both short stories and c1assics.Outsidc reading is encouraged through the use of our library, The students gain WRITING experience by first making a plan or outline of their ideas, then writing a paragraph from this outline. The paragraphs eventually progress to longer com- positions, both original and research, SPEAK- ING experience is gained by numerous oral talks of an expository nature, stressing the qualities of unity and clearness. Listening is not taught as a separate skill but it integrates with the three basic skills above mentioned, The junior English course is primarily a study of American Literature including develop- ment and changes of style, and famous American writers and their works. Senior English places emphasis on com- municative skills, Many individual speeches are Qliven plus practice with parliamentary procedure through mock meetings, formal debate, and astudy of a Shakespearean comedy, The major project the second semester is the research paper which teaches discipline of formal writing, Speech activities this year brought five Div. On September 9, the Ramblers proved that they had the ability for a good season by defeating the Reinbeck team 32-12. On September 15, the Ramblers were hosts to the Charles City Reserves, whom they polished off in fine fashion 27-0, The following week the Ramblers journeyed to Riceville where they tangled with a rugged host team, finally coming out on top 27-0. Nora Springs was the next victim to bow to the Ramblers, 25-7. On homecoming night the Ramblers derailed the Manly Railroaders 26-0 for their third straight conference victory. On October 14, the Ramblers rambled over St. Ansgar 52-6, with the reserves showing up very well in the last half, On Dad's Night, a highly spirited Rambler squad took the field against Rockford in a game which was rated a tossup. The spirited Ramblers came out on top 30-6, The following Friday the Ramblers showed they had no desire to share the title crown with any- one by bombarding Nashua out of contention 20-7, thus clinching the crown and winning the Little Brown Jug. When the Ramblers invaded Ackley they did everything but put the ball across the goal, out- rushing the Raiders- but just couldn't score. The Ramblers finished the season with 8 wins, and 1 tie to earn third place ranking inthe state Class 2 Division, behind Scraton and Ackley. Allison Homecoming was held October 7, on the Greene football field. A parade of floats and decorated bieyeles and tricyeleswasheld before the game. The senior float urging the team to Detail-em won first prize. Ann Rottler won first in the bicycle contest. First in the tricycle contest was Karen Barnhart. During the half of the game, the suspense of who was to be queen was ended when Rosalind Ray was crowned by her sister, Pat, last year's queen. Her attendants were Barbara Voigts, Jeanne Barrels, Mari- lyn Andrews, and Barbara Knapp. Co-captains, Larry Dovey and Bob Smith presented the queen with roses and each attendant with a corsage on behalf of the football team.
