We wish the H Keystone to func- tion in many ways, but the two most important are: Firsts' to increase the loyalty and patronage from surrounding com- munities in school interests. Second-to give the former stu- dents of Greene-Dreher a concentrat- ed history of our school that they may rejoice with us, that the alma mater which we all love is reaching higher as the years roll on. We, the class of 1921, have earn- estly endeavored to acquire the best possible results for the publication of the Keystone. May our critics not judge us too severely. 7 THE KEYSTONE eodcollbn As a token of our gratitude and esteem, and as an expression of appreciation, we, the class of nineteen hun- dred and twenty-one, respectfully dedicate this third vol- ume of the Keystone to fljnseph Hjarnhs who has always been ready with a word of kindly ad- vice, or a helping hand, whenever we came to rough places in our school life, both in class rooms and school activities. 8 THE KEYSTONE THE KEYSTONE SCHOOL SONG Here's to old Greene and Dreher, Ne'er shall we sever, We pledge our loyalty For ever ancl ever. Its first principal was Grace Shaffer Perham, now Assistant County Superintendent. As a result the first graduating class appeared in 1903. At this time the course was lengthened to three years. The school con- tinued its routine with this method until 1916, when a vocational school was organized. The vocational school provided a Home Making course for the girls, and a course in Agriculture for the boys. Upon the establishment of the vocational school Greene and Drener townships combined. This action manifested a progressive step in educa- tion for our section of the county. As a result of the consolidation a greater number of pupils derive benefits of advanced education and can qualify themselves for colleges and higher institutions of learning. Each year the enrollment has increased until all the available space is being utilized. We feel confident as time rolls on, and new classes come and go, that the standard of the work increases even higher and the good work and reputation of our alma mater will be maintained. Our school with the co- operation of the community will become a vital part of the very life of the community, and the results are obvious. 12 THE KEYSTQNE The Alumni Officers I'resz'dent . . . .... From a be- ginning of comparatively few members the organization has at the present time grown to 170 members. The members are somewhat scattered but nevertheless manage to meet once a year to pay homage to their Alma Mater and renew old acquaintances. The social life of the organization is expressed each year in the form of a banquet in honor of the Graduation Class. Arrangements are under way as we go to press for a big banquet this year. 13 T H E K E Y s T O N E Senior Class History EPTEMBER, 1917, the doors of G. D. V. The faculty then consisted of Miss Waters, Miss Reynolds, Mr. Faux, and Mr. Mack, all of whom we owe much devotion for their time spent with us as Freshmen. In October we chose the following class officers: President .... ..... M AUDELL CARLTON V. President . . . ........ HELEN SIEG Secretary .. . . .... RUTH ROBINSON TTGILSMTG1' . . . ..... MINNIE GILPIN During our first year several of our number Were forced to leave the class for various reasons. Much to our delight in 1918 we welcomed a new member, Joy Rommel. September, 1918, only ten members returned to assume the duties of Sophomores. As our former president did not return we chose Helen Sieg as our chief official for the second year, with Dorothy Fowler as Vice- President. In 1919 Joy was forced to leave us, bringing our number down to eight, as others were forced to leave on account of sickness. 14 THE KEYSTONE During the Junior year the class displayed much enthusiasm in school work and activities. The boys represented the class in a creditable manner on the basket ball team. We entered our Senior year with the same zeal and spirit that charac- terized our work the years preceding. On February 12th, 1921, we rend- ered a one-act comedy Neighbors which met with much success. There were many pleasant social activities that entered our Senior year in the form of house parties, social gatherings and various meetings. The chief diiiiculties of our Senior year were Caesar and Geometry, but we strove onward to ultimate success. As now we say farewell to our High School Days, we still hold in mind the many pleasant memories that will ever be the bright spots of our school life. We enter the alumni of our school ever looking back with the same spirit and feeling that we have always held toward our school. if W, N nl J N I l 15 THE KEYSTONE The Faculty J. JACOBS, B.S.A. THE KEYSTONE fr H E K E Y s TO N E Junior Class History N September 3rd, 1918, what we consider the brightest, wisest groups I 1 of boys and girls that ever entered Greene-Dreher walls, collected in L the assembly room and registered as the Freshman class. We entered twenty strong, but for various reasons we were forced to close our first year with only eighteen. As Freshmen we worked diligently in order to fit ourselves for the future years, and to prove to the upper classmen we were anxious to main- tain the high standard of our school. The Sophomore term started with seventeen members. Our second year brought many opportunities, and we believe we took advantage of most of them. Our members were always prominent in school activities and athletics. As Juniors we excel all other classes in number and if good fortune stays with us we will graduate the largest class in the history of our school. 24 TH E K E Y s TO N E Sophomore Class History President ..... . . .BENNETT GILPIN I'yI.f'f -Pl f'SifIU7lt . . . . .GLADYS HAZELTON Sec'rc'tclry .... .... . Let us strive to continue the good work, so when we reach the last round, the honors we have already won will be vastly increased, and we will bring honors to old Greene-Dreher and the class of 1923. Although the organization is young it has proven its ability with each appearance during the past term. It is hoped that more time can be devoted to this organization in coming years, and that success will be the reward of its endeavors. The personnel of the organiza- tion is as follows: SOPRANOS ALTOS Helen Sieg Minnie Gilpin Helen Robacker Ruth Robinson Louise Schelbert Helen Smith Leila Gilpin Agnes Waltz ACCOMPANIST DIRECTOR Mrs. Charles Ehrhardt Mr. J. Jacobs f i9 1 12531111 f 27 T H E K E Y s T 0 N E Boys Vocational Department HIS department has received special honor since the publication of the last Keystone. It is by new achievements and added interest that comes to us each year, that we realize the importance and practica- bility of the work. We feel it not only as being a part of the school, but also by the reaction that is manifested by the community. Early results are evident in the Animal Husbandry courses. The Penn- sylvania State Championship Stock Judging Team were regular students in our school and received all their instruction through the efforts of the Voca- tional Department. The story of their success and achievements will be related in another part of this publication. The work in Poultry Husbandry was offered in an interesting and prac- tical manner. The course was comprehensive and interesting, due to its practical application. Practical problems in poultry management were studied, as well as the regular work on types, breeds, diseases and judging. The Shop Work was profitable in that all projects completed were in demand by the patrons of the school. The most comprehensive piece of work ever undertaken in shop projects since the establishing of the voca- tional school were completed by the Freshman and Sophomore classes. Three large kitchen cabinets were completed and will be put on exhibition and sale at the annual Patrons' Day exhibit. The Forge Work was under the supervision of a practical blacksmith. The work completed was a credit to the department and we are looking for rapid advancement in this phase of the vocational work. 28 THE KEYSTONE Hays Vocational Work 29 T H E K E Y S T 0 N E Girls Vocational Work P' OME Making is that occupation which centers around the home, 'I whether that home be the co-operative enterprise, conducted by a hus- band and wife, for the benefit of their children themselves, children and society, or a place called home by an unmarried woman without a family. Home makers of those girls for whom home economics training is re- quired, includes all girls in any capacity or degree, share or will at some time share in the activities of home making. The science of home making in which every girl should be trained, in- cludes many things, the most important being the following: Sanitation, Hygiene, Economy and Education. Some folks have the wrong idea of the Vocational School, they think that if a girl graduates from a four years' course she should be a profes- sional. The school work tries to give a foundation to future life and devel- opment, and if in a humble way the home making department can open the vision of the girls to the reality and possibilities of home making, that they will anxiously seek further development, the school feels that it has func- tioned. The girls of Greene-Dreher realize the importance and practicability of the home making work, and we trust that it will be advanced and better prepared to meet the increasing demands of the community of which we are a part. 80 THE KEYSTONE THE KE YSTONE The Community and Vocational School Fair HE 1920 Fair was an expression of real community spirit as well as an activity that is fostered by our school. The recent fair was the first under the new management. In the Fall of 1920 the Community Fair was put in the hands of a Community organization, with the school co-oper- ating. The results of the new arrangement left no doubt in the minds of the people as to the advisability of the scheme. We do not have space to go into detail, so we will endeavor to only tell of the important features. The added attraction this year was the livestock exhibit. The patrons of the school showed their desire for this feature by the excellent manner in which they entered their stock. The committee underestimated the interest in livestock, for the large number of stanchions that were built did not accommodate the entries. We trust that we will improve in this department next year. The tag day was a success when we consider that nearly ninety dollars was realized. The booths conducted by the different classes were artisti- cally decorated. The judges awarded the prize to the seniors for the pret- tiest booth. The competition is strong in arranging booths, and much in- terest is shown by the classes. Of course no celebration is complete without eats. This necessity was provided for by the ladies of the community. All those who were served spoke in high praise of the repast. Financially the fair was beyond expectations. A nice amount was put in the reserve fund, and about two hundred dollars was given to the Com- munity Hall Association in payment on the hall. As Seniors we hope that the future classes will realize the importance of the annual fair and will continue to show the interest in the future as was shown in the past. All honor coming to the community comes to the school, and all honor coming to the school comes to the community. Let us work in an effort to make a better school and a better community. 32 THE KEYSTONE Boys Stock Judging Team As we review the activities of our school since the publication of the last Keystone, the work of the boys' stock judging team seems to be out- standing. The class of '21 feels especially honored by the opportunity offered to give an account of the work done by the team, and also by having two ofthe boys as loyal members of the class of '21. The members of the team, Ross Osborne, Friend Uhl and Rush Simons, received their training and instruction in the Greene-Dreher Vocational School. It was with no small effort on the part of the boys and their in- structor that the training was made possible. Our community could not furnish the proper types of animals for preliminaiy work, so it was neces- sary for the boys and Mr. Jacobs to travel many miles in search of desirable animals that could be used in preparing for the final contest. 33 ll ill Elk THE KEYSTONE The results of the State College contest prove the worth of the Pennsyl- vania school system as expressed in vocational schools. Practically every county in the State was represented by one or more teams, making the con- test one of the largest ever conducted by the Division of Extension. In a mock sale contest that was open to every one, including cattle men, farmers, county agents and students, the boys from Greene-Dreher finished first, second and third, proving conclusively that the boys were consistent and understood the value of records, blood lines and the tuberculin test. In recognition of the boys achievements the American Holstein Fresian Breeders' Association presented them with a large silver cup. The Penn- sylvania Holstein Fresian Breeders' Association awarded the boys a trip to Chicago where they would compete as a team with the State teams from all over America. At the Chicago contest the boys finished ninth as a team, and Ross Osborne finished third in the placing of Jerseys. The Chicago trip was very educational, and the boys will always remember it as one of the high marks of their school days. The achievements of our team will never be forgotten, and we trust that the trophy that adorns the auditorium will recall pleasant memories to the alumni and will serve as a stimulus to encourage boys of the coming classes. A i 4 - .7 L 111' -.i iii ' 34 THE KEYSTONE Athletics C' N closing the present school year we are prompted to review the events 6U that have brought honor to our students and school. Possibly nothing has been more outstanding in its relation to school spirit and school life than the basket ball season just completed. The season was ushered in with three inexperienced men, but by hard work and faithful practice the rough edges were worn off and by mid-sea- son old G. D. V. S. took her place with all schools of this section. Some of the strongest teams on the year's schedule were met the early part of the season. The followers of the team firmly believe that if these games were played at a later date the margin between scores would have been considerably narrower. Time has taken from us, by graduation, Capt. Simons, Grimm, guard and Osborne, forward. These three men were clean, hardworking and loyal members. We trust that the example they have set will bring expres- sion in the new men of next season. With the help of Hazleton, Waltz and Carlton we trust the team of next year will be able to present its Alma Mater a record as glowing as the one for the season just closed. The Human Element in Banking The modern bank, if well and properly conducted, is more than a place in which to deposit funds for safe keeping or for cashing checks. It is more than a financial institution. It is a clearing house for not only matters of finance but for any other questions affecting your business or community welfare. lt should be synonymous with Character, Service, Honesty, Integrity, Effi- ciency, Confidence, and Trust-with special emphasis on CONFIDENCE and TRUST. Neither of these two latter when committed to it as such are ever betrayed. All are scrupulously kept. These are the human elements in bank- ing and this institution endeavors to look carefully after these factors in its service to its customers and the business community.
