e V HOOKERTON MAURY O w Greene County Central High School is the reali- zation of a dream come true. This dream was born, when, in the summer of 1958, certain civic-minded persons in Greene County initiated plans for offering to the voters of Greene County a referendum for the purpose of providing funds for a central high school to house the students from Snow Hill, Walstonburg, Hookerton, and Maury. On highway 91 in the Snow Hill township, about one mile north of the intersection of highways 258 and 91, the Greene County Board of Education acquired 50 acres of land for the proposed Central High School. An additional 20 acres were donated by Miss Winnie Harper. In December, 1958, after a $450, 000 bond issue for the construction of a central high school, the Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution to con- solidate the white high schools of Greene County. The Board employed as architect for the building program Mr. William A. Coleman, Kinston, N.C. Actual con- struction began October, 1960, and was ready for occupancy in time for the opening of the 1961-1962 school year. WALSTONBURG ■our in one On September 5, 1961, Robert E. Strother, as first principal, opened the doors of the new Greene Central High School to the high school students of Greene County. Greene Central opened its first year with 28 teachers and 25 classrooms. The vision grows broader and even brighter with each new day. Our sincere thanks go to the Greene County educators who made this program possible for better educational advantages for all its high school boys and girls. With a fine administration and faculty, Greene County Central High School is well-established for present needs and looks to the future with optimism. Such is a history of Greene County Central High School. The true prevading spirit of cooperation and Christian endeavor cannot be put on paper, however. That remains to be realized and felt by every student who attends this school, as so many students will experience . .3 We, as students of Greene County Central High School, are very proud to dedicate this first edition of the CENTRALIS to MISS WINNIE HARPER. Miss Winnie gave unselfishly of herself for many years as a teacher in Greene County Schools, Her desire for better education was again shown by her donation of a site for Greene Central High School. We hope, in this small way, we can show our great admiration and respect for her. 9 k EVA C . BOYETTE A.B., Atlantic Christian College Sponsor, F.T.A.
