THE RECORD OPPONENT Dugger Linton 7 Gerstmeyer 26 Garfield 6 Plainfield 34 West Vigo 6 Cascade 7 Sullivan 7 Brazil 20 Clinton 6 CUBS 33 26 14 9 12 40 19 6 13 Our defending WIC championship team had another successful season this year. Although the team fell short of retaining the title, they played football as it should be played — with lots of hit and lots of desire. After a 7-3 season, Coach Bob Bergman has com- piled a 15-5 record in his two years at G.H.S. — quite a credit to coach Bergman. Replacing line coach Hal Sampson this year was coach Joe Fiedler, a former hard-hitting all ICC center at I.S.U. Coach Fiedler taught the line what football was all about and ended up with the hardest hitting line in the WIC. The Tiger Cubs opened the season in great form with the pride of champions. Wiping out Dugger 33-0 and Linton 26-7, made the Big Blue look like the power- house of the conference. Then came the Gerstmeyer game — the game of the season as writers put it. Gerstmeyer played a men- tally unprepared Tiger team and came out ahead 26-0. Gerstmeyer players commented after the game — You guys hit harder than anybody. A slight consolation after a bitter defeat. In the first high school football game played on as- tro-turf, Greencastle defeated a good group of Garfield men in a 14-6 struggle. The next game, challenging the Quakers of Plain- field, looked great in the first half. The cubs, not allow- ing Plainfield past the thirty yard line, led 9-0 at the half. In the second half, three unlucky breaks and mistakes led on to a 34-9 upset, Plainfield on top. Greencastle ' s mighty defense (The Eleven Animals) really showed through in the West Vigo game, the cubs winning 14-6 in what was at that time the best played game. Tallying twenty-eight points in the first quarter, the starters went to the side to watch the underclassmen get some experience in the remainder of the game against Cascade. With three conference games left and a shot for the title, the Tigers were up for Sullivan. The Sullivan Golden Arrows were sorry they came to the field after the on- slaught. Described by Coach Bergman as the best over- all game my boys have played in the last two years, and by Coach Fiedler, Boys, you punished them physi- cally, the Tigers found that it was a good night to win, 19-7. A Brazil team capitalized on Tiger mistakes and enforced this with a strong defense to come out on top in a WIC second-place deciding game. Finishing a successful season with a victory over Clinton 13-6, Greencastle found themselves third in the conference and proud to have had another successful campaign.
