Although the team fell short of retaining the title, they played football as it should be played — with lots of hit and lots of desire. After a 7-3 season, Coach Bob Bergman has com- piled a 15-5 record in his two years at G.H.S. — quite a credit to coach Bergman. Replacing line coach Hal Sampson this year was coach Joe Fiedler, a former hard-hitting all ICC center at I.S.U. Coach Fiedler taught the line what football was all about and ended up with the hardest hitting line in the WIC. The Tiger Cubs opened the season in great form with the pride of champions. Wiping out Dugger 33-0 and Linton 26-7, made the Big Blue look like the power- house of the conference. Then came the Gerstmeyer game — the game of the season as writers put it. Gerstmeyer played a men- tally unprepared Tiger team and came out ahead 26-0. Gerstmeyer players commented after the game — You guys hit harder than anybody. A slight consolation after a bitter defeat. In the first high school football game played on as- tro-turf, Greencastle defeated a good group of Garfield men in a 14-6 struggle. The next game, challenging the Quakers of Plain- field, looked great in the first half. The cubs, not allow- ing Plainfield past the thirty yard line, led 9-0 at the half. In the second half, three unlucky breaks and mistakes led on to a 34-9 upset, Plainfield on top. Greencastle ' s mighty defense (The Eleven Animals) really showed through in the West Vigo game, the cubs winning 14-6 in what was at that time the best played game. Tallying twenty-eight points in the first quarter, the starters went to the side to watch the underclassmen get some experience in the remainder of the game against Cascade. With three conference games left and a shot for the title, the Tigers were up for Sullivan. The Sullivan Golden Arrows were sorry they came to the field after the on- slaught. Described by Coach Bergman as the best over- all game my boys have played in the last two years, and by Coach Fiedler, Boys, you punished them physi- cally, the Tigers found that it was a good night to win, 19-7. A Brazil team capitalized on Tiger mistakes and enforced this with a strong defense to come out on top in a WIC second-place deciding game. Finishing a successful season with a victory over Clinton 13-6, Greencastle found themselves third in the conference and proud to have had another successful campaign. Coached by Dick Crawley and Steve Paquin, the young tigers had an unblemished 6-0 record. The season opened with a tight game against a tough Clinton squad. The cubs made a touchdown in the final quarter to win the battle 13-7. The next game, against Danville, tested the tiger defensive unit. Scoring in the first period, the cubs had to fight to keep their win. However, it looked as though the frosh too had their own eleven animals as they kept their lead and won 7-0. At the end of the first half, the Cadets of Cascade led the mighty Cubs 7-6. But a snappy talk by coach Crawley and some pep in the squad spurred Greencas- tle on to a 19-7 victory. Coach Crawley got to test his bench strength against Rockv ille. In a 41-6 victory, the Tigers ' offense had a productive evening. Varsity players, like Pete Nor frosh play- In a hard fought contest and an importu.it game (both for record ' s and rivalry ' s sake) the Cubs played some hard-nosed football against the Red Devils from Brazil. In the final minutes it payed off, the scoreboard reading 21-20 in Greencastle ' s favor over a hapless bunch from Brazil. With a perfect season riding on the game against the Quakers of Plainfield, the Tigers were spirited, and rolled over them 18-0. Crosscountry team includes— Row one: R. Foutz, S. Hecko, B. Lear, R. After fin- ishing the regular season with an eleven win and ten loss record, the two-milers captured a sixth in the Western Indi- ana Conference and then took eleventh place in the sec- tional. The team also managed a second place in the county meet. Coach McCracken predicts that next year ' s team will be one of the best with five returning lettermen including one freshman, one sophomore, and three juniors. Lettermen in the 1967 season were:Seniors — Ron Cook, Don Irwin, Terry Ross, also managers David Albright and Jim Hendrich; Juniors — Sam Hecko, Don Dowty, and Pat Blose. Sophomore Rick Mount and Freshman Mike Gray also lettered. Junior Sam Hecko and Sophomore Rick Mount start their second mile. O.K., Dowty, run twenty miles before supper. Having a disappointing season this year, the G.H.S. grapplers were proud of their two victories. Inexperience and poor luck were the cause of many defeats. However, the future looks bright with returning lettermen Tom Gorham (12-1), Marc Monnett (8-6), and Ted Brewer (7-7). Ted Brewer was awarded outstanding wrestler of the season this year. Another WIC championship went down in G.HS. sports history as the court generals of Greencastle captured the coveted crown this year with a 7-1 conference record. This is the second time G.H.S. has taken home the con- ference crown. This year ' s varsity was composed of eleven seniors and one sophomore. The team featured balanced scoring and great teamwork. Although substantially smaller than most of their opponents the Cubs managed to out-hustle, out-shoot, and out-score fourteen of their rivals. Picked by sports writers to lose over half of their games, the Cubs showed these experts that it ' s not the size that counts but the desire and teamwork which this year ' s team had. One of the most exciting games of the season saw the G.H.S. courtmen come from behind to take a victory from arch rival Crawfordsville. Another game saw the G.H.S players out play the Ger- stmeyer Black Cats to come up with the victory that enabled them to capture the WIC. Although the Cubs will lose eleven members of the var- sity this year, next year looks promising with the mem bers of the conference winning B-team moving in. Under the direction of Coach Gary Myers, who got one hundred percent performance out of his squad in every game, the reserve squad fell just one point short of an undefeated season. Perhaps the most exciting game of the season for the B- Team was the Rockville Invitational Tournament. With only one minute of play remaining, the score found the Cubs trailing by six points. But the never-give-up attitude of the squad resulted in a 63-58 victory for the Cubs in an over- time. With this outstanding display of their ability, next year ' s hopes for the WIC are high. In a well played game, our boys proved themselves as a team, in knocking off a good group of Crawfordsville players 37-36. After seven well played games, the young G.H.S. sharp- shooters found themselves the victor over foes, with an unblemished 7-0 record. Look, look, see Spot i Seniors always pay attention to the teacher English, Speech, and Journalism New teachers, new classes, and more students have caused big changes in the English department this year. The biggest single change is a three-track system for all grades. As freshmen, students study short stories by authors such as Mark Twain and read Shakespeare ' s Romeo and Juliet. Sophomores take a semester of speech and a semester of English during which they study English lit- erature. American literature and linguistic grammar keep juniors busy. Seniors have their choice of taking Honors English, Grammar and Composition, or English Literature. In addition to the beginning speech classes that sophomores take, an advanced speech class is being offered this year. Students in this class give pantomimes, self-evaluation speeches, and cuttings from Spoon River Anthology. As well as editing the Ink Pot, journalism students practice writing different kinds of news stories and learn how to make yearbook layouts. Phyllis Diller or Liz Taylor Mathematics Okay, put your nose right in that little circle. G.H.S. is proud of the fact that it is meeting the ever increasing demands of science. G.H.S. offers two years of algebra and a year of plane geometry to form a basis of math for the individual. These classes are constructed so as to inspire the student to go on into the more technical and higher level courses also offered. These courses include advanced mathematics, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. Given, to prove, figure. Now look at your to prove and see what you want. U.S. and World History students learn of both cur- rent and past events of the world. In civics classes the students learn how our governments function. The three languages offered at G.H.S. are French, Latin and Spanish. The students in a modern language class study a language with both written and spoken fluency in mind. The language clubs — French, Latin, and Spanish — pro- vide opportunities for students to practice and hear in an informal atmosphere the language they are studying. French club members presented skits in French and heard a guest speaker from DePauw. The annual Roman circus and the Roman Banquet highlighted the year for the Latin Club. Among other activities the Spanish Club attended a Kiwanis travelogue and went to the DePauw language lab. This year the three clubs combined for a Christmas party. Carols, sung in the different languages, were part of the program. Each club supplied a portion of the en- tertainment. But we always did meet the deadlines, and, after a sat- isfying struggle finished Minaret 1968. We, the staff hope you all made it Up the Down Staircase. X Glen Davis, a member of the class of 1968, died Octo- ber 1, 1966. Fellow students recall Glen ' s good nature and easy- going sense of humor. Glen ' s death was a loss to the class of 1968. He is sadly missed. ■X y p i rf - r. rfr ip . $, © V- 4t ' 4 B 7 ifi. Xo v -7 0 S IP J K ■
