If, as you glance through the pages for the first time, it presents a vivid picture of the past year, the bottom step of our goal has been reached. In years to come when each of you is busy in your particular path of life, if this book can again recall pleasant memories of bygone days spent in work and play with the students and teachers of G. H. S., our goal has been attained. Then and only then can We judge correctly the real success of this book. MR. H. A. THOMAS DEDICATION We, the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-five, in appreciation of his interest, enthusiasm, kindly advice and belief in usg respectfully dedicate this publication of the Minaret to Mr. H. Here's to you ola' Greencastle H igb, To you all loyalty, When we are gone and years passed by, You'll be our memory. The happy days we now spend here Will all foo soon be gone Will all foo soon be gone- But youlll still live in memories dear And in the years to come. T. PERRY WESLY e HI so Adminstration - U Three years ago this spring, Mr. Boston entered this school as Super- intendent of Schools. From that time he has taken a great interest in our school and its activities. He has started many new projects which have proven successful. It has been a great pleasure as well as a big help, to have had Mr. Boston with us during these years. For the past five years, Mr. Bishop, our Principal, has been one of our most able leaders. His good judgment and fairness at all times has been one of the main factors of our successes. Mr. Michael, Assistant Principal for four years, is another member of the administration whose ability and willingness to help with our ac- tivities have made him popular with the student body. In the fall of nineteen hundred and twenty-nine Miss Harlan came back to the high school after graduating in the spring, but this time as secretary to Mr. Boston. Even with her work, she has always found time to help the students or the teachers whenever they call on her. We feel that we just couldn't get along without Dorothy. PAUL F. Seventh and Eighth Grades U We have all taken or must take the step these energetic Junior I-Ii's are complet- ing. The guidance of Mrs. Stratton and Miss Vaughan, seventh grade sponsors, and Miss Throop and Mr. Hagan, eighth grade sponsors, has thus enabled these groups to advance one step farther toward success. Both the seventh and eighth grades have contributed to the success of the Senior Carnival, Junior High Basket Ball Team, the Band, and also there are those little maidsv who blend their voices into the Junior Choiru. Through the interest of a group of students of Miss Vaughan's home room a Hobby Club has been organized which meets on regular club days. The eagerness to do has resulted in accom- plishments. An attempt to have class officers, which proved to be unsuccessful, resulted in the eighth grade's choosing a committee to attend to the entertainments throughout the year. Each of the classes is divided into two sections, each section having its own extra curricular activities. Paul Bintz The Youngest , a delightful three-act comedy by Philip Barry, was produced by the Class of 1935 in the high school auditorium on May 8. As Barry tells the story, Richard Winslow, otherwise known as the youngest, as the downtrodden member of the Winslossfs has to give way to everyone. His ambition is to write, but the Winslow' ambition for him is that he shall join them in making pins. Into this situation come Nancy Blake and her bloodhound Eustace. Nancy being a friend to Muff and altogether the most charming of busybodies considers the saving of Richard to be her manifest destiny. A twenty dollar bet with Muff that Nancy in a week can make Richard over into the most important member of the family determines the matter. To help, Nancy takes Alan Martin, a young lawyer married to Augusta W'inslow, into her confidence, learning thereby that though Richard is a posthumous son, he should nevertheless have inherited a portion of his father's estate as did the other members of the family. With this fact for reserve ammunition, Na-ncy precipitates a quarrel which deprives Richard of his customary allowance. Proceeding with her theory that if one treats a mouse like a lion, he will grow a mane overnight , Nancy, through a clever use of psy- chology, turns Richard on the family until he has them completely afraid of him. At that point, Richard unexpectedly advances beyond Nancy's control. In fact, she finds that he has taken the wind out of her sails completely in order to show her that her purposes were not in the least altruistic but really for the purpose of pinning a rose on Nancy. The play ends with their reconciliation and a really altruistic act in which Richard restores the property to the Winslonfs. STUDENT DIRECTORS SPONSORS Miss HARRIS Miss CLAPI1 Miss MCGAUGHEY MR. Our Coach Marion Tick Crawley experienced his first year as the coach of the varsity basket ball team this year and he proved himself very capable- and worthy of the position. He was graduated from Greencastle in 1926, from DePauw in 1930, and completed three years work in Columbia University. Mr. Crawley is not only a basket ball coach but for two years he served as football and baseball coach. For three years he trained the B team. Aside from his work outside school he also directs all the boys' physical ed- ucation classes for both the junior and senior high school. We wish him as much success in the future as he has had so far. i I 1 I l 1 i I l i 3 i - W Q I 1 - - ' l l 1 I - -. XX.-.X-.QX' XX .X X X- .5 jXXXXX.X. X. They had nine men left out of the ten that went to the State last year. The Cubs had some very bad luck in the Sectional Tourney, being overcome by the Roachdale boys, who later went to the state final. The Tiger Cubs will lose five of the members this year by graduation. They are: Edward Knauer, who has played on the varsity for three years as a guard, and has been able to hold some of the best point collecting men to very few pointsg Donald Cox, who has played as guard for four yearsg Charles Hutcheson. who for the past two years has shown skill and sportsmanship as a forwardg Ewan Cartwright, who played the posi- tion of center the last two years, and Tom Murnane, who has helped Cartwright at the center position. On account of the age limit John Garl and Lloyd Hamm will not be eligible to play next year. Johnnie Garl did not get to play in the Sectional Tourney and we are sure that he would have been a great help if he could have played. The team won eleven out of twenty games. Some of the most interesting games were with Newcastle, Rushville. Brazil and jeff. of Lafayette. The game at Brazil was a good one but the Brazil game here was much better. Girls' Athletics Director INIISS KESTNER XVhat is athletics? Ask Miss Kestncr. She knows. As a foundation for her present vocation, she attended the Lawrenceburg Indiana High School, India-na University, and the Normal College of American Gymnastic Union at Indianapolis. Besides teaching all the girls' physical education classes of both the high school and the Wards, she is also director of girls' sports which include baseball, basket ball and ten-ms. Perhaps her skill in the net sport is partly due to her winning a tennis meet held at Lawrenceburg, Indiana in the summer of 1934. In the last few years she has sponsored the girls' athletics club. Added to all this Miss Kestner is our Dean of Girls. This year the health club was organized. Trips were taken to investigate the health conditions of parts of Greencastle. Then when the hands of time sound The Gym Ex- hibit , Miss Kestner is busy, yes, she has control of practically 300 girls. Weeks before time, while passing through the halls, you can ,hear One-two-three-four. Step-step-step. That's Miss Kestner. But it all goes in the development of the program which is a success! l i l l Firsf Row Urff lo rigbly: Dorothy Birt, Iva Surber, Mary Knoll, Maxine Surber, Mary Lou Hammond, and Katherine Rossock. Girls' Sports BASEBALL The fall of 1934 found a group of enthusiastic girls ready to line up for baseball. The fall schedule consisted of four games. They experienced onlyone real walloping and that was at the hand of Union- ville, who has played a regular schedule this year. The team was victorious in every game they played with DePauw Varsity and DePauw Alumnae. The team lost two hard- fought games by a two- or three-point margin to Cloverdale and Unionville. The forward positions were held by Dorothy Birt, Iva Surber, and either Elizabeth Garl'or Charlotte Neal. The guards were Evelyn Cox, Patience Thompson, and Mary Lou Hammond. Substitutes were Eleanor Eiteljorge, Bernadine Ragsdale, Maxine Surber, Marilyn Stewart, Betty Mullins, and Frances Gostage. James Beverly Lucas Awards 1 James Beverly Lucas Memorial Fund A permanent endowment fund, known as the James Beverly Lucas Memorial Fund has been created by Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Lucas and placed by them in the hands of school officials. The fund, which totals 32400, was earned by James through his industry and thrift, and had been invested in Thrift stamps, War Bonds, and a Christmas Savings Fund. The interest from this money is to be divided equally among the four pupils of the Freshman class who make the highest grades each year in Latin, Algebra. English, and Manual Training, the four subjects which James was taking at the time of his death. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas by this gift to the High School girls and boys, are not only erecting a lasting monument to the industry and ambitions of james, but are encourag- ing others to aspire to the same ambitions and high ideals of scholarship in the High School, especially among the underclassmen. FULLY EXPLAINED Plenty forcefully, the conductor demanded, Fare! But the passenger paid no at- tention. Fare, please! he yelled again, but still the passenger was oblivious. By the ejaculatory term 'fare', said the conductor, I imply no reference to the state of the weather, nor even to the quality of the service vouchsafed by this philan- thropic company. I merely allude, in a manner perhaps lacking in diplomacy, but not in conciseness, to the monetary obligation incurred by your presence in this vehicle, and sug- gest that you liquidate.
