It's volunteering for the job that nobody wants to do but must be done. It's staying late on a Friday when Miami Vice is on and you know you're going to miss it because you just won't get home in time. It's what separates adults from children. It's taking an active part in life when you would prefer to be a spectator. It's all of these things and more. But, mainly, involvement is growing up. And, it doesn't end there. Involvement goes on your entire life. The involvement that has taken place this year-by youg by the adminis- tration, is only the beginning. It grows as you grow and gets stron- ger with age. Don't ever lose it. It's one of the most important things you can offer another person. We boarded the buses around 5:45, and a few minutes later we were on our way. I was excited! The ride down seemed like it would never end, but we finally arrived around 8:00. The first place we visited was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We were just in time to see the changing of the guard. It's a very impressive sight. We also saw John F. Kennedy's grave at Arlington National Cemetery. Our next stop was the Lincoln Memorial. The Reflect- ing pool by the Memorial added a sense of calmness to what was becoming a very hectic morning. One of my favorite places was next - The Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. The monument makes an impres- sive statement. Our trip took us to the FBI headquarters next. We learned about law enforcement and crimes of yesterday and today. They still shoot the machine gun. We liked that. By then it was time for lunch. The morning had gone by so quickly we hardly noticed the time. We ate by the Jefferson Memorial. It was cold, so most of us spent the time on the buses. After lunch we drove past the White House. The next stop was The Mall. We spread out and invaded the muse- ums that surround the Mall. Air and Space, Natural His- tory, The 1876 Centennial Exhibit, The National Gallery, even all the way to the Capital-nothing escaped us. But, the best part of the trip came on the way home. We stopped at the Montgomery Mall. Two and a half hours to do what we wanted! Within reason, of course. So, natural- ly, we went crazy. The trip was a smashing success. We all had a great time. We even learned a thing or two. For example, did you know you can fit ten people into the bathroom on a bus? Their work and preparation began to show as Spirit Week initiated Homecoming 1985 on Monday, October 7. The week began with Clash Day. Rhonda Lind- say and Butch Patalinghug were recognized as most mismatched. Nerds invaded the school Tuesday, with Jeremy Hirneisen and Tracy Myers taking first place. Awards for Celebrity Day on Wednesday went to Peggy Freeman and Craig Vanderau. A bonfire was held in the evening to practice incinerating the Canners. Thursday was Blue and Gold Day, with Michaelle Keiffer and Sandy Snider taking honors. The se- niors earned first place and the juniors took second place in the banner competition. A pep rally oc- curred at the end of the day. Friday was Dress Up Day. Jamie Craig ad Tina McCoy were the class acts. The traditional parade circuited through town in the evening, leading into the pre-game show, where Carol Ritz was crowned Homecoming Queen. The football match versus Biglerville followed. Alumni hockey and soccer games and a dance sponsored by WIKZ-95 were held Saturday, culmi- nating one of Greencastle's largest Homecomings. PPENINGS Queen Carol with escort, Vaughn Martin, Homecoming has always been exciting for me. Even as a freshman, I looked forward to Spirit Week and the Homecoming Dance. But, I never thought I would be chosen Homecoming Queen. Even though I was nominated, I never expected to become one of the three princesseschosen to represent my senior class. As Spirit Week slowly progressed, I became anxious, thinking Friday night would never come. Finally, it was here! When I arrived at the school, I was filled with excitement. All the princesses received flowers and sachets. Also, many pictures were taken of the princesses and their escorts. During the Homecoming parade, I became more and more nervous. When we returned to the school, we waited anxiously for the pre-game ceremonies. When it was finally time to announce the Queen, I was relieved yet tense. Mr. McConnell announced the Queen's name. It was mine! Last year's Queen, Lori Yeager, placed the crown on my head. I felt so honored. Being crowned Greencastle-Antrim's 1985 Homecoming Queen was one of the most memo- rable events of my senior year. I would like to thank everyone who made that special dream come true. When is the next dance? When do homecoming mums go on sale? When is spirit week? To find the answers to these and many other questions concerning school activities, just attend a student council meeting. This year each class voted on who they wanted to be their student council representative. These elected members must at- tend every meeting and are given the privilege to vote on certain issues. But just because you may not be an elected member doesn't mean you can't attend the meetings. Anyone is welcome and it's a great way to find out what's happening within your school. STUDE T FGRUM On October seventh, the Green- castle-Antrim High School Student Council hosted a forum for student council members in Franklin County and the surrounding counties. Richard Slagle, from the Lincoln Intermediate Unit was the modera- tor. He opened the forum by ex- plaining that the meeting's purpose was to give us an opportunity to exchange ideas on topics that are important to high school students, their parents and the entire community. After his opening address, we gathered to select officers. Students interested in filling an office cam- paigned by speaking about why they wanted the office and what they would do if elected. Then the forum members voted for the can- didate of their choice. After the officers were chosen, committees were formed. Each committee was assigned a topic to report on. Topics included: Alcohol Abuseg Honor Societiesg and Grad- ing Scales. The next meeting is scheduled for February third. The committees will meet for the last time on April seventh when they will present their completed reports. by Cindy Dixon CAREER D Y Every year in the fall, Student Council spon- sors Career Day. CUNOCGCHE C-UE 1986 rf Advisor: Mr. Summer To the yearbook staff, the yearbook means hard work, late nights and sacrifice. By the time the yearbook gets under way, everyone is working together. Sometimes it's forgotten who is editor of what. It's just plain old fash- ioned team work as the staff works together designing layouts, gathering stories, scores and pictures, typing, fitting and counting copy, cropping pictures, selling ads, scheduling photographers, selling yearbooks, arguing, worrying, rushing around, meeting deadlines, and finally putting out the book. Although being a member of the yearbook staff is a lot of hard work, it is a very rewarding job. Among the many rewards are learning to cooperate, listen, accept criticism, and work under pressure. But, all working together is fun and we get to know a lot of people by seeing them in pictures as we design the pages. The staff would like to thank Mr. Summer and Miss Baskwill for all the times they have stayed late and the advice and help they have given. Also, thanks to Ms. Smith for allowing us the use of the library and for her help in using the computers, doing layouts, solving prob- lems ,... By Sarah Kendall 120 fri N f ki. f D mf ,W J N . DISTRICT CHOIR MEMBERS Tina McCoy, Marcia Hykes, Peggy Freeman. 132 DISTRICT BAND Peggy Freeman, Marcia Hykes, Melissa Embly. Band started when the community bought us our new uniforms. We really appreciated their thoughtfulness and generosity. The hard work started early in August. It was unbearably hot, but we still had to get the music, routines, and positions on the field set up for the ear. Band Camp takes almost all your time. You're at school from morning until night. The only thing you think about is, How good a Band and andfront are we going to have this year? How are we going to do? Field Band means you have to want to be doing what you're doing because it takes almost all your time to get everything organized - practice ev- ry Tuesday and Thursday night from 6:00 until 8:00. When you are practicing you have to give 110721 for 2 solid hours. It becomes very frustrating ecause everyone says something different and you don't know which way to turn. When you know there is a competition the upcoming weekend ou work extra hard because this is when you realize you are going tobe competing against other bands. Pressure builds because you don't have any llea what the other band's shows look like. Finally, it's the big time -the bus trip to the competition. All you think about is How will we do? I-Iow will Ido? It really doesn't hit you until u arrive at the competition. This is the first time you see other bands practicing before going on the field. All you keep asking is, Is our work as Eod as theirs? Can we beat them? When the time comes to warm-up we become dead serious about our show. After we warm-up, we get in a big huddle. Mr. Forney gives us a 'rong pep talk. Then, just before we line up, we give each other a hug and a good luck wish. By now we are so nervous that walking our to the field becomes a real effort. We walk on the field as they announce us as The Pride of Greencas- -e. It gives is a great feeling. When the crowd starts yelling for us, it becomes easy for us to show our pride. While we wait for the judges to get ready, the only thing I think about is, What if I drop my silk? Will anyone see me mess up? But, you have to .tink about the work. When the Drum Major says Horns Up! , it's time for the show to begin. After your performance, you either have a great feeling or a bad feeling. It all depends on how well you think you've performed. We get off the eld and talk about the show and how well we think we did. Finally, the time comes for awards. Everybody becomes quiet, sits anxiously, and waits for the awards. The announcer says how well we all per- -wrmed. It just makes us more nervous. When he gets to our group and announces our place, we have to stand there without showing any emotion. When we get back to the buses, we either explode with excitement, or sulk with disappointment. This is when we realize that all the hard work we .it into the year has paid off. We couldn't have a Band and Bandfront without Mr. Forney, Dawn McLain, Bobbi Sheely, Sue Meek, the entire school, and the community. hanks for the help, the time, the effort, and most of all the support everybody gave us. Q-QB, 5 fa I1 GA Beats Waynesboro One of the greatest days during this year's hockey season was when the GA Devilettes played the Waynesboro Maid- ens. We did something no other team has done for 3 years, and that was beat Waynesboro by a score of 1-0. The only goal was scored in the second half with 13 minutes left in the game. Deb Rine, the wing, took a corner and passed the ball to Candy Angle. Candy then scored the only goal of the game. During the rest of the game, the defense was able to hold off any scoring efforts made by the Maidens. It was a tremendous team effort. It was a day we will never forget. The J.V. team came very close to defeating the Maidens also, the final score was 0-1. They played very tough, even down to the last second. I would like to wish best of luck to everyone who is going to play hockey, next year, and never forget to use your scoops. This year could have never been possible without the coaches, THANKS! j.V. Big Breakthrough Even though the 1985 football season did not turn out as we had hoped, the team did take steps in the right direction. We won the first game of the season over Ken- nard Dale, tied against our arch- rival James Buchanan, and made a very good showing against a strong New Oxford team. Part of this success was due to the intensive weight program start- ed by Coach Hough. He also insti- tuted a new offense and defense which will prove even more effec- tive next year. I believe the team's attitude also has changed, giving us the hunger to win. I am sure that with even more weight training and hard work, next year's team will make bigger strides toward a winning team. The streak goes back to 19 The boys also won the Blue Mountain League regular season for the sixth straight year. They picked up wins at the Franklin County Invitation the Boonesboro Invitationals, and the State College Invitationals. The boys squad, coached by Greg Hoover, finished the season in fine style, easily winning the BML Conference Meet Championship fthe fi win in the past six yearsj, and their second consecutive P.l.A.A. District III team title. It was the boys' fourth district title in the past six years, a the strongest performance ever by a Greencastle team at a district meet. The boys pushed four runners into the top thirteen positions. In the meet at the end of the year, the P.I.A.A. Cross Country State Championships, the boys were awarded the State Runner-Up trophy for th performance. Unlike the girls team, the boys team was lead by a pack of runners, and not any one individual. The boys found their strength in numbers. A ferent number-one runner seemed to appear every race. However, the team was not without its individual heroes. Sophomore Matt McDonald served notice to the rest of the state that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years. A strong teenth place finish in the state meet marked him as one of the best sophomores in the state. Matt also won All-District honors by finishing four as well as gaining All-Conference honors. Seniors Pete Lazich and Keith Eshleman, gained All-Conference and All-District honors, as did junior Todd Hirneisen. Senior Bill Derrick a junior Steve Kerr also picked up All-Conference honors. For seniors Pete Lazich, Keith Eshleman, Bill Derrick, Duane Wible, Craig Vanderau, and Joe Trobaugh, it was a fitting end to a very success careers as GAHS Harriers. It included twenty-eight straight dual meets without a loss, numerous invitational wins, four regular season BML titl three BML Conference meet titles, one Runner-Up trophy, two district titles, two fourths, a twelfth, and a Runner-Up at the state meet. Losing six seniors means next year will be a rebuilding year for the Devils. But, along with McDonald, Hirneisen, and Kerr, the boys have an cellent nucleus of underclassmenreturning. Todd Martin had an outstanding year, as did Jeremy Hirneisen, despite missing half the season wit leg injury. Tom Karinshak made great improvements from his freshmen year, and freshman Brenton Thomas and Tracey Weller show gr promise. 1986 should be an interesting year. But make no mistake about it-1985 continued the five year old dynasty. r 1 ' A M j 1985 P.I.A.A. CLASS AA STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS! Only one team in Pennsylvania can claim that title, and the claim belon to the Girls' Cross Country Team of Greencastle-Antrim. After being so close for the past four years, Coach Greg Hoover's girls captured the fi state championship ever by a Greencastle girls team and the third state championship in the school's history. fThe boys hold the other t capturing the title in 1980 and 19811. You deserve it were the words Coach Hoover used through-out the season. I really meant that. The senior girls on the team had been so clo and so consistent over the past four years. They worked very hard, year round, and the only goal they hadn't accomplished was winning a st championship. It was a success from the start as the girls went undefeated, capturing the Blue Mountain League Championship on the way. It was the third y in a row they won the league. With their 7-0 record, they ran their undefeated dual meet streak to 26-O over a three-year period. The senior girls l only one meet in four years, compiling an impressive 28-1 mark. The girls also won team titles in the Franklin County lnvitationals, the Tri-State Invitiationals, the Boonsboro lnvitationals, and the State Colle Invitationals. They followed that by winning their fourth consecutive BML Conference Meet title, and the P.l.A.A. District Ill Championship. was their third district title in four years. ' The girls were led all season by three-time high school ALL-AMERICAN, Tracy Bowers. Her impressive stats for this year: undefeated in dual meets, individual winner in the Franklin County lnvitationals, the Judges Classic lnvitationals, Winchester, Virginia, the Tri-St lnvitationals, the Boonsboro lnvitationals, the State College lnvitationals, an unprecendented fourth BML Conference Meet title, a district m win for the second year in a row. Then she got the one she really wanted for the past four years-Individual Cross Country STATE CHAMPIO Her time was the fastest of the day for females and proved she was the best in the state. But one person does not make a team. Finishing right behind Tracy in every meet was senior Carol Ritz. Carol finished an excellent four-year reer by once again picking up all-conference and all-district honors. Her biggest race of the year came when it counted most-at the state meet. Ru ning her best race ever, Carol finished twelfth out of two hundred and fifty girls in the race, and two thousand five hundred girls who attempted get to the state meet. For that, she received all-state honors. Kim College, who Coach Hoover called a consistent team runner for four years, played a very important role in the team's success. She, t claimed all-conference honors, along with youngsters Michele Robinson, Lori Derrick, and Karen Stinson. Tonya Nisewander rounded out t top seven, with supporting help from Natalie Heefner, Nikki Shockey, and Susy Sterner. The only disappointment was season long injuries to niors Lisa Ritz and Kim College. Next year should prove a challenging one. It's hard to improve on a state championship. It's even harder when you lose valuable seniors as t girls' team will. However, the coaching staff feels that the returning girls will be more than up to the task of keeping Greencastle number o CHAMP GF CI-IAMPIQNS This year's cross country season was my best ever. I ran just about every race faster than the years before. I also broke most of my records this year and I was undefeated for the entire season. This year was by far my best because the team and I both won every dual meet, Conference, Districts, and the big one - States! J 6aww fx J uf QNX, C, gg i-J X X , -xx ,xxxs x .
