Led by head coach, Leo Duncan, and assistant coach, Jim Thomas, the Blue Devils won the BML Southern Division and the BML Co-Championship. An outstanding senior player, Joe Szaflarski, helped to lead the Blue Devils on to victory with 58 strike-outs and a pitching record of 5 and 3. He has the lowest E.Ft.A. of 2.28 followed by Bob Fignar with 2.30 and Carl Dixon with 2.80. Mike Ensminger and Alan Izer led the team in hitting with .344 and .343 averages. Ensminger had 3 home runs and lzer had 4 home runs while Keith Yohn had an errorless season. Tim Kershner, an outstanding centerfield, had only 3 errors. Other notable performances included Alan lzer with most runs-23 and Bon Barnhart with 5 doubles. The third consecutive undefeated dual meet season, and the third BML Championship highlighted another highly successful season for the Boys' Cross Country team. The boys, under fifth year coach, Greg Hoover, ran their consecutive win strand to 37, - , as they finished the dual meet season 8-0. Along the way, they successfully defended their titles in the Boonsboro Invitational, Q. and the BML Conference Meet, and a strong second place K. showing in the prestigious State College Invitational. 1 Q The boys successfully made the transition from AA 7. competition to AAA, as they nearly upset favored Carlisle for the pl cr District Ill title, losing by just one point. In their third straight trip 5 to the State Championship meet, the boys finished fourth, ' W ,7 3 competing against the biggest and best schools in the state. S The Blue Devils were led all season by a trio of seniors, Bryan 7 ' FL- 9, Thomas, Brian Korrell, and Vaughn Martin. These three were Q instrumental in not only this years success, but the success the ,f 6 cross country team has had over the past three years. All three A earned All-Conference honors with Thomas wining the individual f conference championship and All-District honors. Thomas received All- State honors as he finished fourth in the state meet. ' ln five years of coaching, no team has worked as hard as this one, and that's saying quite a lot , said their coach. ,J Considering the fact we were supposed to struggle to win the BML, and not being considered a contender for the District title, let alone being one of the top four teams in the state, show how much desire and work went into the year concluded Hoover. 94 .Q Shmwhkmwmm V20 'IW in-'mf Senior Runners: V. With a varsity squad consisting of four freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and two seniors, the girls won seven dual meets, while losing just one. They also clamined the team championship at the Boonsboro invitational, edging out Maryland state champion Williamsport. That one loss, however, cost the girls the BML title to Gettysburg, but, the girls did get their revenge, as they upset the Warriors at the BML Conference Meet. But the best was yet to come Led by three district medal winners, the charges of coach Greg Hoover won the schools first girls district title, winning the District lll AA championship by over 30 points. This win also allowed the girls to participate for the first time at state championship meet, held at Lehigh University. On November 6th, Greencastle informed the rest of the state that they would be a team to be reckon with over the next few years as they finished an impressive fourth place. Six girls, freshman Tracy Bowers, Carol Ritz, Lisa Ritz, Kim College, sophomore Bonnie Becker, and junior Angie Thomas all gathered All- Conference honors, while Bowers won the individual championship. This being my first year as coach, with a new style of play, made progress difficult to obtain. From the start of our first practice, through the season, the players were dedicated to the work put before them. Because of their attitude, dedication, and support from the school and parents, I see no reason for the 1983 season not to be a success. See you in the fall, I look forward to next season, no coach could ask for a better group of young people to work with. May we fill the stadium with enthusiasm. We did not have the best of luck, losing two one point games to James Buchanan and to champion Waynesboro plus a 50 heartbreaker overtime loss to Littlestown. But as a 57 coach, l appreciated the cooperation by team 27 members. It was probably my most pleasureable 35 year involving coaching. As the season rogressed, the band took three second place wards and two first places, including 1st at hapter championships. The win at Chapter hampionships allowed them to go to Atlantic cast Championships at Ben Salem outside hila. where they received 16th out of 23 ands. The band had several changes this ear. The guard were the proud owners of new niforms which were purchased by the band oosters association. The new look enhanced he band a great deal, although the guard only ook one 2nd place award, the guard improved y far from the years before. They received our ighest score ever of 11 points. This was also he first year the band had used two drum ajors. The results of this have been shown ery effectly in the fact that in the three ompetltions that a best drum major award as given.
