With eighty-eight members in our class, we occupy rooms five, one, and ten. Our first class activity was to elect officers. After much debating and friendly arguments, we selected our colors, flower, motto, and ring. The ring committee chose attractive samples which were displayed in the hall on second floor. Later hat and pennant were selected. We are well represented in all the school activities, such as the science fair and magazine drive. One activity of ours to make extra money for our senior trip has been to sponsor a stationery drive. When it comes to sports, nonehas anything on our class. The majority of the members of the hockey, soccer, and basketball teams and of the varsity cheerleaders are juniors. A new policy this year is home room's responsibility for presenting an assembly program. Room five, on January 28, under the direction of Mrs. Toms, gave a very surprising and delightful program presenting the life of Dr. Harling Sponseller, who was then supervising principal. The students learned more of the wonderful and exciting life of Dr. Sponseller and also the many grand things which he has done during his life time. Several persons from his past and present appeared, including his wife, son, and grandchildren. Room one, under the direction of Mrs, Conrad, on February 10, presented a play which they had written honoring Abraham Lincoln. The class adapted their presentation from the essay Lincoln Speaks at Gettysburg. On August 31, still longing for the swimming pool, but anxious to renew old acquaintances and make new ones, the sophomores entered their second year of high school. The first few weeks were fun, in con- trast to last year's painful experiences of meeting new faces, of strange corridors and helplessness. With the organization of clubs, came a newly formed one, Future Teachers of America, of which Richard Hale is the president. Of course, basketball season and the shouts of spectators called for cheerleaders. Four of the six girls on the jayvee cheering squad are sophomores, and one on the varsity squad. vm'-t r .-S! The dramatic ability of the sophomores was shown by the Christmas program presented by one section of the class and another assembly program called Teen Magic. Contrary to previous routine, the sophomores began this year to accumulate money for their graduation trip. By selling candy and placing individual magazine drive awards in the treasury, a sizeable fund has begun to grow. CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1958, entered thehalls of Greencastle-Antrim High School August 30, 1954 as Fresh- men with approximately one hundred-twenty in the class. To the town boys and girls it wasn't much different from Junior High but the Antrim boys and girls were a little frightened. But after a few days of getting acquainted, everyone settled down to routine studies. The first thing we did was elect class officers which were: President,Lanny Haughg Vice-President, Thomas McBethp Secretary, Shirley Plumg Treasurer, Edwin Diehl. During the year there have been many socialevents in which many of the Freshmen have participated. Many attended the annual Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y Rally which was held in the James Buchanan Joint High School. The class held a Christmas Party, and the A Section held a Farewell Party for Dr. Edwin Sponseller, our social studies teacher, and Dr. Harling Sponseller, our principal who left us after staying only until February. The officers are: President, Elam Oberholtzer: Vice-President, Barbara Myers:Treasurer, Carolyn Purnell: Secretary, Judy Glaser. A great honor was conferred upon our grade by the entire Junior High when the King and Queen to represent our school in the Chambersburg Hal1owe'en Parade were elected from our grade: Elam Oberholtzer reigned as King and Bonnie Myers as Queen. Another event in which we were permitted to participate was the Sadie Hawkins' Dance sponsored by the Junior T ri-Hi-Y: however, our pleasures were turned to sorrow when we learned that our home room adviser had injured her arm in a fall. Throughout the year we enjoyed decorating the large bulletin board with appropriate scenes. Each year brings new activities, and now we look forward to being freshmen when students from Antrim Township will join our class. The Future Teachers of America Club CFTAJ was started this year in Greencastle High School with Mr. Stouffer as the adviser. Our first step was to draw up a constitution for the club. G1 November 19, 1954 we were granted a charter by the Pennsylvania State Education Association and by the National Education Association. Among our many activities we were represented at the Southern Convention of F. T. A., held at Harrisburg, by four active members. We attended a talent show sponsored by the Shippensburg College F. T. A. Club. At a later date we were invited to a square dance by the same club, and the next day to a football game and a tour of the college campus. The club has been planning to publish a high school directory. this will contain all names, addresses, and telephone numbers of the faculty and the students in Junior-Senior High School. In February we attended the Ice Capades at Hershey and in March sent representatives to the state convention at Juniata College. These activities have helped to acquaint us with the duties and privileges of teachers. Sponsor by F. T. A. MOT TO Toward New Horizons COLORS FLOWER Red and White Red Rose The Greencastle Chapter of the F .H.A. held their first meeting September 17, 1954, to elect officers for the coming year. The first event of the year was a skating party at Cold Springs Park. The purpose of the party was to raise money for the Club treasury. Club members and their friends enjoyed the evening of skating. In January the members of the Club spent a day at the Farm Show in Harrisburg. This trip proved educational to all who attended. The outstanding contribution of the club was their share in paying for the draperies in the new home economics room. In order to raise money for the club treasury, the F.H.A. girls have joined with the F.F.A. boys in selling weiners at lunch hour. This project has been worthwhile and the club treasuries are sharing equally all profits. The members of tl1e club enjoy participating in the activities and fulfilling the creed, To face the future with warm courage and high hopes. Zeigler Post 6319 and Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States presented to each homeroom of our school a beautiful silk American Flag and a holder for the flag. Commander Max Izer, when presenting a flag to Dr. Sponseller, stated that it was a privilege to present the emblem of a great nation to our school and that all of us should cherish with pride our Republic for which it stands. Mrs. Ruth Johnson then presented a flag to a representative of each homeroom grade in our ele- mentary and secondary schools, We'l1 long remember what an inspiring sight it was to see flags waving from the hands of boys and girls representing grades one through twelve. Adjutant William O. Shuman then led in prayer as each of our hearts promised loyalty to God and Country. Who will forget the thrill of parading with the service men and all of the pupils and teachers of Greencastle-Antrim! Each of us - approximately 1600 - carried an American flag presented by the veterans' organization. First graders through seniors marched from Orchard Circle and Franklin Street through Washington and Baltimore Streets, Center Square, and North Carlisle Street to the rostrum atthe Playground where an appropriate program was given. Dr. Harry Kriner, President of Shippensburg State Teachers College, was the principal speaker. The weather was ideal, and each one of us felt a sense of pride and of responsibility for our first Veterans' Day. Sponsored by: STROI-I'S DRUG STORE ASSEM Y Q , xy , . 9 5 4 ji 9 . LL BACK ROW: Mr. Papoutsis, Ezolt, Ryder, Lauthers, Mumma, Sneckenberger, Cooper, Myers, FRON1 Staley, Pensinger, Witmer, Wells, Stine, Crunkleton, With what we hope will be just a temporary end of the Franklin County Basketball League, the Blue Devils began practice early in November under the leadership of our new coach, Mr, Papoutsis, Although minus the services of many of last year's stars, the team broke into the win column with a victory in our first game. Time proved this to be only a stepping stone on which we were to go on to many exciting victories. Our schedule included new opponents such as Clearspring, Boiling Springs, and Cumberland Valley, The coach and squad are to be congratulated for a very successful season.
