The order of the court erected Antrim Township. in honor of Mother Antrim from which many of our Scotch-lrish settlers had migrated. Forty-one years later when a center was desired, Greencastle was laid out and named. probably, for a beloved spot of green in County Donegal, ireland. Though the hrst school built in the township was the Enoch Rrown one. the Brown's Mill school, hrst built about 1780, has had a continuous record, however in different buildings. The Old Brown's Mill School, shown in the cut and erected in 1836 for school and church, is a familiar landmark. Then in 1922 the Browns Mill Consolidated school, opened un- der Mr. Frank M. Smith's capable supervision, began a new era in Antrim's educational system. For the 1940--ll term, 308 boys and girls are enrolled in this school, From the schools of Antrim and neighboring townships come l89 pupils for the upper four years in our Greencastle High School. Transportation to high school has become diffi- cult, therefore this year Mr. Lcininger is operating three busses that permit approximately OO of our stu- dents to have more comfortable transportation for a reasonable fee. This marks another dehnite step in Antrim's educational career. --- ----:gif v--fi-11-r-vm:-r.fi..q1 .rK ifvif,f- G. 0l.ClfL!fy lI..X.GlU1X'l-f. U. S. S. Greencastle, guided by the life guards who protected us on our journey. The sailboat of freedom was under the leadership of Captain Baumgardner. We bashful and bewildered passengers sailed through the halls and into the classrooms of G. H. S. to take our stand in this, our first exciting en- deavor. The first port entered was Cold Spring Park where we enjoyed greatly a weiner roast and skating party. As classroom projects we made ship booklets and safety posters, and displayed early school relics. On June 4, 1938, school closed with our passengers one-fourth of the way safely on our journey. Young loyal passengers assembled together on September 4, 1938, to resume another part of our journey. in fact, the stormiest part. still under the leadership of Captain Baumgardner. Honor was achieved by our class in sports. Wie were delighted to give our opponents a hard battle although we did lose a few games. VVe claimed second place in our spring sport, volley ball. ln june the first half of our goal had been reachedg we had sailed successfully over the hardest part of our journey. Then we were ready for the third part, no longer on lower deck allll in second class, but on top deck and in the first class under our new leader, Captain Kell. VVe voted for our class rings on October 9, and what a proud day it was for us juniors when gold and blue sapphire rings with the G. H. S. insignia arrived. Now. too, we were in the Advanced Glee Club which made its first ap- pearance at the P. T. A. meeting in October. On October Zo, we entered, another port on our jour- ney which was a hike to Enoch Brown Park where we had lunch and a very delightful time. On No- vember l, some of the junior girls had the thrill of appearing in the new glee club vestments at the Franklin County Educational Association meeting. XYe presented for Armistice Day in assembly a patriotic program entitled My Country, 'Tis of Thee, under the direction of Miss Phillippy. Sev- eral members of the class also took part in the Christmas program presented by the Hi-Y organiza- tions. Another thrill greeted us when we were permitted, on january 5, to choose our motto, colors, and fiower. Our class song was written by Annabelle Shinham to the tune of the Wisconsin Tech. Song. More enjoyment occurred on March 12 when our caps and pennants arrived. Then on two glorious nights in April we presented our junior class play, Trail of the Lonesome Pine, in the theatre of the U. S. S. Greencastle. Green and white strolled down the aisles as ushers played their important role. The year also brought successes in sportsg we won the championship in basketball and in soccer. lt couldn't help but make our hearts swell as we had finished three-fourths of our jour- ney and were sailing swiftly towards commencement shores. Vtell. here we were again ready to sail with the crew under the leadership of Captain Zim- merman. ln December we presented our senior class play, Tish. both plays being under the lead- ership of M rs. Conrad to earn money for our VVashington trip, At the end of the hrst semester one of our faithful classmates left our group. john VVine, who with other high school students belonged to the National Guard, went with IOOFA Battery E for a year's army training at Camp Shelby, Mis- sissippi, doing his duty for our country. On February 3, we attended court. a very interesting ses- sion. VX'e're almost ready to dock as we have just about reached the commencement shore with green and white banners fiying, cheers for the .-Xlma Mater. and voices of the free-willed pas- sengers of -ll ringing out their song, chorus of citizenship, freedom and democracy. After launch- ing our boat at commencement, we received our new passport, that important and well earned docu- ment which leads each one of us in different directions embarking on new life around the world with never to be forgotten memories. 8 DOROTHY BEAR Couzlmvcirrl A comely grace. pleasing eye and face.
