Instead of their meaning, I remember yours. If this book were about you, I would read it over again. The pictures are few, but I see you- your smile, your face. Then I remember why I'm here, and I look at my book again- your voice upon my ears, your smile in my eyes, thoughts of you within me, and I turn the page. -P. Then, on August 30, 1974, that dream came true. West's first football game was played on the ground where only rock and mud had been. What was the out- come of that historic event? -- Greenbrier West-223 Richwood High 'School-71 It was on that night that the athletic field was launched into years of service for future Cavaliers. Such a dream did not appear overnight. Many people from many walks of life shared the Cavalier dream. It is because they sacrificed their time, money, and effort that we can now call that dream a reality. Who do we thank? We can thank many, many people: Alderson National Bank, Anderson's Paving, Appalachian Power Company, Board of Education, Georgia-Pacific Company, Imperial Smokeless Coal Company, Leckie Coal Company, Darrell Fleshman, Paul Hurst, Tracy Hylton, Herb May, Cliff Neal, Bob Painter, Bob Price, and Sonny Stroud. Cavaliers are especially indebted to Mr. Bill Lewis, who secured S50,000 from the Greenbrier County Revenue Sharing Funds. BELOW is our athletic field when the work on it was progressing. The lead changed hands several times in the first two quarters leaving the half- time score a narrow 17-16 lead by West. Montgomery shut West out in the second half while scoring twice in the fourth quarter to make the final tally, Montgomery 30, West 17. ANSTED DEFEATS WEST West suffered the first defeat of the season, losing to Ansted 28 to 14. Ansted jumped to a 22 to 8 lead during the first half. After a scoreless third period, West put the ball into the end zone a second time. The final score of the game came on a 12 yard run by Ansted, putting the game out of reach for the Cavaliers. T Y S .HSE CAVALIERS DOWN WARRIORS West scored their second victory defeating Pocahontas County 27-O in Warrior territory. The scoring' was opened by West in the second quarter with 14 points and continued with two more TD's later in the game. The defense did a superb job blank- ing Pocahontas County offense. WE ST TOPS LUMBERJACKS Could it have been the new field or the new surroundings for the Greenbrier West Cavaliers as they won their opening game against Richwood with a score of 22-7? Even though Richwood scored in the first quarter, Greenbrier West came through in the second, hitting paydirt for all its 22 points. NORTHFORK DEFEATS THE CAVALIERS Northfork downed the Cavaliers with a score of 37-6. Bill Bob Stroud was the lone Cavalier to hit paydirt, ear- ning it in the second quarter. Stroud took the ball over from the five-yard mark, and a try for the extra point failed, leav- ing the lone TD on the Cavaliers' scoreboard. CAVALIERS MAUL MT. HOPE West opened the scoring as Dennis Burns passed to Bill Bob Stroud for a 40 yard touchdown pass with the extra point failing. Scoring' was continued for West as they left Mount Hope scoreless at the half 24-0. The second quarter was a runaway for the Cavaliers as they scored two more touchdowns with one extra point making the final score 37-6. WEST UPSETS HINTON IN OVERTIME A 15-yard pass from quarterback Dennis Burns to Danny Windon did the trick for winning this hard fought game. Both defenses allowed neither team to score in regular time. West scored on a 15 yard pass from quarterback Dennis Burns to his receiver, Danny Windon, in overtime to defeat the Bobcats 6-O. 116 CAVALIERS STOMP GRIZZLIES West scored its fifth victory of the season with a 20-O win over the Nicholas County Grizzlies. The fourth quarter proved successful for the West offense as Bill Bob Stroud scored the first touchdown on a five-yard run. A fumble recovery set up the next score with Vernon Jones hitting paydirt for West. The final touchdown was scored by Dennis Burns as he carried the pigskin across the goal line. Marshall Hinkle and Randy Gwinn each kicked an extra point. The Grizzlies have not scored a single point against the Cavaliers in six years. SPARTANS OUTSCORE HARRISMEN The traditional cross-country rival, Greenbrier East, collided with West on our new athletic field. During most of the game Kenny Eagle, Harold Walters and Dennis Williams were anchors for the Cavalier defense. The offensive line showed Frank Bills, Joel Bonner, Steve Isaacs, Brian Jones, Danny Kashola, Clifford Wicks, James Wicks, and Danny Windon. The lone Cavalier touchdown came in the final minutes of play when Damon Hubbard returned a punt for 62 yards. COLLINS DOWNS WEST In an awesome display of offensive power, Collins High of Oak Hill spoiled Greenbrier West's homecoming with a 42-0 win. The end ofthe first half saw Oak Hill leading 28-O and continuing with two more touchdowns in the second half. Xia wr HW Q 2-Q Q M A Qx ,Q ., wk 3 M ff Ml K Q A V I 9 ga S Q gi f.
